    RPS Request for Support from MA PIRC July 1 September, 30, 2011

    Workshops for parent groups are listed under item 3, but I am happy to provide those under item 1 and/or2 as well. The district will provide additional workshops on cultural competency, high qualityinstruction, and other topics.

    1. For school staff (Optional attendance) Dates TBD for Septembera. Workshop 1 - Family Engagement A Catalyst for Change September 20, 2011, 4 6

    pm, RHS Library

    Studies have shown that the greatest improvement in student performance and school

    achievement occurs when parents are actively involved in the schools. But how doschools engage parents in their childrens education? What motivates parents to becomeinvolved? What can parents really do? This workshop is designed for school personnel toexplore what research has shown to be the impact of family engagement of studentattitudes, skills and behaviors. Participants discuss their own experiencesbothsuccesses and challengesin partnering with families to support their childrenseducation and success in school.

    b. Workshop 2 - Creating Family Friendly Schools: Strategies that Support Family Involvement in Diverse Communities September 27, 2011, 4 6 pm, RHS Library

    Welcoming families into their childrens schools is everyones responsibility.

    Understanding diverse cultures and ways to support family involvement are central to thisworkshop designed for teachers, administrators, and school personnel. Both new andseasoned professionals will acquire information, resources, and strategies that can beused to support family involvement initiatives within their schools and district.Participants will learn the characteristics of family-friendly schools and explorechallenges related to implementing these practices within diverse communities. Thisworkshop focuses on practical strategies for enhancing communication between schoolsand families, developing a welcoming school climate, and building working relationshipswith community partners.

    2. For the Randolph Interfaith Council, Town Recreation Dept, Town Manager, Town Clerk, Pre-School Providers, After School Provider(s), Town Council, Rev Brown and other Churches, and

    other Community membersa. Outreach to Families from Diverse Communities August 29, 2011, 11 am 1 pm:

    Training and lunch, RCMS Cafetorium

    The values, cultures, and languages of families from diverse backgrounds should shapethe outreach strategies community organizations use. This workshop is designed tosupport faith-based, community-based, and other organizations in their efforts to supportfamily involvement in education in their communities. The elements of culture, cross-cultural communication, working with speakers of English as a second language, and the

    needs of immigrant families as they effect family participation in education are alldiscussed. Workshop participants receive assessment tools and strategies designed to helpthem develop effective outreach plans for their communities. This workshop also presentsconcrete strategies for reaching and informing parents with limited-English proficiencyabout their role in the educational process.

    3. Train the Trainer Workshops for the Family/Parent Groupsa. Workshop 1 - Understanding Schools in the United States, July 19, 2011, 6 8 pm,

    RCMS Cafetorium:

    For families who are new to the U.S., schools and our educational system can be very

    puzzling and confusing. This workshop suggests ways new immigrant families can helptheir children succeed in school as they adjust to a new culture and language. Thisworkshop covers components of the U.S. school system, such as enrollment, gradingsystem, report cards, and rights of immigrants and students who are English-languagelearners.

    b. Workshop 2 Parents Are Powerful Advocacy and Parent Rights (Roll out inSeptember during the same week as the school staff workshop 1), August 2, 2011, 6 8pm, RCMS Cafetorium:

    Parents have the power of many rights and options under both federal and stateeducational laws. But how can parents use this power to strengthen their role andinvolvement in their childs education and support their childs academic success? Thisworkshop explores what parents can do at home, in school and at the school district levelto ensure their child receives a quality education. The workshop informs parents abouthow educational reform in Massachusetts can positively affected their childrens learningexperiences in school.

    c. Workshop 3 Families and Schools Together (Roll out in September during the sameweek as the school staff workshop 2) , Aug. 16, 2011, 6-8 pm, RCMS Cafetorium :

    All children benefit greatly if the important adults in their lives family members andteachers work together. How well does your childs school involve families? What canyou do to get involved? This workshop provides practical ways parents can support theirchilds learning and achievement in school. It explores how families can partner withthe ir childs teachers and school.

    d. Workshop 4 MCAS Part I & 2 , Sept. 13, 2011, 7 9 pm, RHS Library:

    MCAS Part I: A Roadmap to Understanding Your Childs Scores and How to Support Future Learning (Roll out in October before MCAS scores are released)

    Early in the school year, families receive a Parent/Guardian Report which gives detailsabout how their child did on the p revious springs MCAS tests. What do these scoresmean? What do these numbers say about my childs learning skills? How can I help mychild improve? This workshop answers these questions for parents by focusing on howto interpret MCAS scores, resource s to support their childs learning, and ways they canhelp improve their childs performance of future tests.

    MCAS Part 2: Helping Your Child Prepare (Roll out workshop to schools in January2012 before MCAS testing begins)

    The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System is a key strategy for improvingeducation in Massachusetts. It is a way to ensure high standards for students and holdsschools accountable for student progress. This workshop explains the reasons why wehave this statewide testing system and how it is currently being implemented. Parentsexamine sample MCAS questions and responses and explore supports and resourcesavailable for helping students improve their performance.
