From your Editor...Happy New Year and welcome to 2012, the Queen's Diamond

Jubilee and Olympic year. Does any Member have Royal photoswith Club Car interest? I am especially after photos of the Queen'sVanden Plas 3 Litre Mkl Countryrnan, owned in the early 1960's.RR135 thank you's go to Paul Shread, Cliff Boulton and SteveTurner for articles, plus all the photographers whose photos wehave used, and Trevor Chambers for some great lines courtesy ofthe Farina Forum. Right now the article cupboard is bare, soplease send me an article - a paragraph or two about your car, anevent you've been to, or a reminiscence or two, with a photo ifyou have it and I'll get it in the Rosette Recorder for everyone toenjoy.See you at a COOC Rally or two in 2012 - there's lots tochoose froml Dave Page

Chairman's Report...Another year has rolled past and it is Renewal Time again.

Despite, or actually, because ofthe current economic situation wedecided to hold the current membership fees for another year butwe will have to monitor the rising costs of postage and paper, letalone all the other costs associated with running the club, bcforethe 2012 AGM.As always, please do make sure that you renew your membershippromptly as it makes life a lot harder for James and Sheila if itdrags on for ages.

Just like last year, if you receive the RR after this issue, you willbe deemed as having renewed your membership. When the nextRR comes out, those who have not paid will not receive a finalRR, they will instead, receive a Final Renewal Reminder. Oncethose who have not yet renewed pay using the final reminder formthey will be sent their RR. This saves the club a great deal ofpostage expense as we only need to send out RRs to those whoplan to renew. We don't issue receipts for membership - the nextRR is your receipt.A few of you have complained that we ask for car details on therenewal form every year but, actually, we don't. What the formsays is to give us your vehicle details but only if they havechanged.2011 was a bumper year for Club rallies and events, with a superbNational Rally in Nor{olk, and, looking at the Events Diary inthis issue, 2012 could prove to be even better. There are showsand events literally all over the country so I hope that most ofyou

will be able to attend a few.The National Rally is being held as part of the Tram Sundayevent in lleetwood, Lancashire. Former Blackpool resident JohnLakey always raves about Tram Sunday so I am really pleasedthat Rob and the Lancashire Area members have chosen theevent {br the National Rally. I hope as many of you as possiblewill make the eIlort to attend.Dave and Nicky are still doing a superb job with the RosetteRecorder but please do take notice of Dave's appeal for materialfor the RR, Having done the job myself for many years I knowhow di{Iicult it is to produce magazine with very few articles soplease do take the time to write up stories and articles, no matterhow short - and photographs are always welcome; especially oneswith people inlIt's nice to see a new full page ad from NTG in this issue - anotherresult of Dave's persuasive powers but we are sorry to seeEarlpartt ad reduced to a quarter page.lVc were hoping to have the COOC website re-jigged by nowbutJohn Lakey was a crucial player in the design and productionof the original COOC site and we necd his input into whateverwe replace it with. Unfortunately John has had a really roughtime just lately; he has taken redundancy from the BBC aftermany yea$, he has been verv ill over Christmas and, very sadly, his Mum Brenda passed away in January. Needless to say, all thishas been far more important to deal with than COOC websitesso please do bear with us.Brenda, and her late husband Vic, were grcat supporters of theCambridge -Oxford Owaers Club. Vic owned a MkIV Magnettewhich he subsequently gave to John and startedJohn't long heldallection lor all things Farina. Brenda often made cakes tocelebrate major COOC anniversaries such as the 30th anniversaryof the Farinas in 1989 and she was always interested in the Cluband what we were up to. I'm sure you will all join with me insendingJohn our support and thoughts. The Farina Forum is still doing very well thanks to Eddie's e{Iortsand, of course, thanks to the contributions of all of you who useit. The COOC Farina Forum Calendars were a success and 60of them were sent out to members all over the world.I hear that the Government is planning to stop the annualirritation of having to re-SORN cars once they have been initiallySORNed. This will be a great help to all of us who have plentyof cars which are oll the road and,/or awaiting restoration. If the last Qreen's DiamondJubilee year in 1897 was anything togo by, this should be a great year. I look forward to seeing yousomewhere ... Taff

w wwb!So I've had rny Oxford, "Nuff" for around three years and after changing the brake rnaster and slave

cylinders, a reconditioned engine, sorne rninor bodywork and waxoyling together with regular servicing,we've becorne very happy with each other. Dad had two Oxfords and I learnt to drive in an A60 so I can

rernerrrber the heady snell of creased leather, oldrubber, the occasional whiff of engine oil, the tick of thefuel pump and farniliar gearbox whine very well.

And why is she called NufP \Vell maybe named after LordNuffield, pun'eyor of'the finest motor cars in England andfounder of the Nu{Iield foundation, or maybe rvhen she's notgoing r,vcll 'eNullis eNu{f , but generally bccause Nulling is be tterthan driving my Nlorris Oxlbrd. Just don't ask about Lazarus theLandrover!

Trvo or three days a week we drivc up to work at WesLminsterfrom just outside Chclmslord a round trip of over 90 milessometimes taking the A13 and sometimes the M25. Of course, everything goes past us on the motonvay but wc'rc just as goodas the posh BM!V's, Jaguars and Bentleys once we get into theCity, rvhere everything travels at the samc speed. And thetourists love takins pictures ofthe unusual old car... lvc probablyappear in photograph albunrs all over tlle \4'orld by nowl lVehavc to be a bit carel'ul though, when tourists jump o{I thepavement uncxpectcdly to takc snaps.

I'r'c been luckv enouqh to gct car-parking with my job at dreCardinal Humc Ccntrc, although I stil l have to pay thecongestion chargc. It's our 25th anniversary this ycar trndCarclinal Hume establishcd thc Ccntrc to l.relp some of thepoorcst people he saw living in \Vestminster homcless youngpeople sleeping rough and lamilics in need. And ol course, Nuff takes e\-erything in her stride, lrom thc hcat of sitting inthe traffic in summer, to nipping through back streets to avoid congestion andplaying rvith the bcrdy buses, multi-drop vans, Boris bikcs and black cabs. Onecab driver once told me he thought that the Oxford rvould bc worth d20k iI'sold at the right place (!), but I don't think i'11 be selling NulI anytime soon aswe 've still got lots of miles to together.

Down at the Tyre Shopwith MoWoG

Recently one of my customers bought himself a rather smartWolseley 15/60. He asked me to give the car a once over and topay special attention to the tyres. The guy he'd bought it from hadwarned him the tyres had received some advisories at the recentN/OT. I gave the car a thorough service and duly checked the tyresas requested. The N/OT repod was indeed accurate; the nearsidefront tyre was very close to the limit, being worn almost smooth onthe outer edge although the rest of the tyre had well over the'1,6mm legal l imit. There was also some cracking between thetreads. The otfside tyre was fine as far as the tread was concernedbut had the same cracking between the treads and also on thesidewalls. Both rear tyres were right at the limit being worn belowthe 2mm tread wear indicators round the circumference of the tyrein the centre of the tread. A visit to the tyre shop was a must if thecar was to stay safe and legal. The car was a fairly low mileage andvery original example and still on crossply's. I wouldn't have beensurprised if they were only the second set of boots it had ever hadas they were obviously very old tyres. I find it strange that manypeople wil l spend a lot of t ime keeping their original cars in tip topcondition or spend a small fortune restoring them to as new if notbetter condition, while often paying little attention to their tyres.

Anyway, this wise 15/60 owner wasn't taking any chances so Isoon found my self down at the tyre shop thumbing throughvarious tyre catalogues and surfing the "t'internet" with help andadvice from the guy's who really know what's what when it comesto classic rubber.

lvleanwhile in the fitting bay before any new tyres were fitted theold 15/60 underwent a full front-end alignment on equipment Icould only dream of owning and would have looked like space agetechnology when the car was new.

Due to cost, availability and in the interests of safety it wasdecided to switch to radials. Although the correct 165R14 tyres arenot a pooular size for modern vehicles there is still a reasonablechoice available from budget tyres such as Nankang and Toyo's to

more expensive Falken or Uniroyals. lf originality had been thedeciding factor then crossply tyres could have been ordered fromone of the specialists such as Longstone Tyres etc. but at abouttwice the price of equivalent radials with a much shorter expectedmileage and without doubt they would be less sure footed incertain weather conditions.

The Uniroyals had a pleasing old-fashioned tread pattern anddidn't look out of place once fitted and balanced. The car wastransformed by these tyres, true the steering was slightly heavier atparking speeds but not excessively so and raising the pressuresfrom the recommended 23psi to 30psi which is common whenfitt ing radials all but eliminated this. Once out on the road theradials were quieter and hugged the road better. Fitting the moreexpensive Uniroyals had been a wise decision as I have drivenplenty of farina's on lesser tyres which have caused a lot of roadnoise and some are worse than others at making the steering heaq/which could also cause premature wear in the steering box.

It is also wodhwhile pointing out that some crossplys are actuallybetter than others. Back in the days when all or most farinas wererunning around on crossplys lhe original equipment were DunlopD75's known as "Groundhogs" they were actually quite good intheir day as were Goodyear G8's which were a popularreplacement. A cheaper option with a similar tread pattern wereLee Conquests. Cheaper tyres were available, as were remouldssuch as Colways which were popular at the time and some wereok, but some were very poor with little adhesion to the road.Nowadays if you really want crossplys you will have to get themfrom a vintage tyr6 specialist and they are often reprodoctions ofold makes and tread oatterns.

Discussing classic rubber down at the tyre shop, we all came tothe conclusion that if you use your car regularly in all weathers ontoday's busy roads then radials are the only safe choice but if yourcar is a near concourse show piece that covers a low mileage in theSummer months and originality is important to you then providingyou drive within their Iimitations, crossplys should be fine.

Whatever rubber you choose, above all condition is always themost important factor. Always keep the pressures right andregularly inspect your tyres for damage and wear. lf you decide touse secondhand tyres or remoulds only obtain them from areputable source. Never use old tyres that have been unused foryears as these can often fail at high speeds without warning withdisastrous results, Tyres on classic cars usually suffer from lack ofuse and often have to be replaced long before the tread is wornany where near the legal limit due to cracks in the rubber or flats onthe running surface caused by the weight of the car being sat onthe tyres for long periods. Look after your car's rubber and it willlook after you. MowoG

Very litde has indeed happened but by the time you read this reporl we u'illhave had our January "after xmas" get together meal and soon the eveningswill get lighter. We always welcome new faces at our meetings, you will be madevery welcome indeed,so if you are free pop up and see us.

I am really looking forward to this coming season's shows and gettitg outand about and enjoying my Oxford.

There is however a local meet that does carry on through the winter and someof our members have been to this meet. It's held on the third Thursday of everymonth and is based at the George Hotel in Dorchester on Thames. I tumed upat their November meeting in my Odord. Only an MG kept the Oxford companyas many people tum up at winter meets in modern cars citing dark wet eveningsas a reason for keeping their classics safely indoors. I can empathise with this - ourca.rs can be a pain in winter with their poor headlights etc but hat stops me deadin my tracls is sa]ted roads. I then went to the December meeting which was aChdstmas party and that turned out to be a really good night, especially as I wontheir classic car quiz too. This meet isn't marque specific so like our summer pubmeets, you'Il find a real mix of classic transport.

The future of our April to September pub meets hasn't been finalised yet - Ir1eed to consult other local members to see what people want but there is a chancewe can rctum to our old haunt at the Six Bells in Warborough as the pub has re-opened for business. I doubt whether we would continue meeting on Mondaysthough as many rural pubs around here seem to close on Monday evenings nowI am keen to keep a foot in the door ofthe Dorchester meet and I will get moreinvolved here though I appreciate Thursday evening is not ideal for some ofour

SundayJuly ITth 2011 saw the 26th Trim Vintage and VeteanCar Show held on the outskirts of this well known County Meathtown. The backdrop to the show field is the site of the ruins of thelargest Anglo-Norman castle irr lreland, built in 1172, and madefamous in the 1995 film "Bmveheat" where it was used to portrayEdinburgh casde in the l3th century,

As with my previous visits to both the Mosney and Terenureshows, both ofwhich were held within the prevrous few weels, theFarina contingent seemed to once again mainly comprise a smallnumber of low mileage Wolseley 16,/60s - maybe because FrederickWolseley himself was an Irish native? To balance things slighdy, there was one late model Austin A60 there, but no Morris, Rjley orMG variants, nor any six cylinder cars. A club member from theBelfast area brought along his very smart looking J reg 16,/60, itscondition being a crcdit to its low mileage and dedicated o$ner.

Under vehicle import rules for the Republic of lreland, untilrecendy it was possible to bring in classic vehicles and have them re-registercd for the modest sum of 50 Euros. For some unknownreason they are classified along with commercials, and the importduty on those has now increased to 200, thus malqng it now fourtimes as epensive to re-reglster a classic car here. It is to be hopedthat sense will prevail and that the 50 fee will be re-introduced forvehicles over 30 years old, as previously was the case. It isunde$tood that representations have been made by various.vintageclubs and medla here concerning this situtation.

Hopefully more positive news on this matter will be forthcomingin the not too dista.nt future,

cl,nesterfl.eLdWe have finally settled dn a new venue for our meeiings since the pub we used

to meet at (for over 30 years) has become generally closed on a Monday night. The new venue is the Olde House at Chesterfield, it's is a pub, restaurant andhotel just a short distance from our previous meeting place. It has a large carpark and it looks promising as a long-term venue. There are tables and chai$outside next to the car park, and I'm looking lorward to some warrn summerevenings with a good turnout of club cars on display. The address is the OldeHouse, Loundsley Green Road, Chesterfield, S40 4RN. We are meeting on the2nd Monday of each month,

OurJanuary and February meetings were held at the Olde House, they werewell attended and the new place seemed to be popular with everyone.

A big thank you to all the SurreyMembers who make being part of this Club such a pleasure. It was good towelcome some new faces such as Gmham Carter (Oxford M) and Terry Bunceto our meetings and each month generally had new and interesting cars showup. We were troubled by an Alfa Romeo owners club aranging to meet on thesame night as us (they weren't to know), but they moved their meeting to adifferent night after our si-x cylinder gathering, which once agarn rammed thecar park. Some wag was heard to remark they didn't want their Wesry to catchrust ftom the Alfasl The Star put on an excellent BBQ and everyone had a goodtime despite the drizzle. I for one enjoyed my earlymoming trip to Norfolk stopping at Grimes Graves ancient flint mines, thenback roads all the way to the Nor{olk coast. I even bought new tyres for theoccasion.

Thanks arc due to Stewart Lee and Shovel for organizing the Surrey Rally atCranleigh in August (see report elsewhere). We will be there again this year, although some regulars will be attending another special event that day - theWedding of our very own Terry Culley who is tying the knot with Angela.Congratulations Ter'4'.

GRAND HENHAM STEAM RALSeptember zott

I had been looking forward to Henham for quitea while as it would be the first time I'd towed myfolding caravan with "Wooley". Also, lwas hopingto see the 16/60 lsold there at the 2010 Rally, butthat was not to be. I took full advantage oJ theExhibitors free camping, and was on site for thefull 5 days from 9.30am Thursday to 9.30amMonday. lt was '153 miles from my home in Kentto Henham, and took about 3 & halt hours eachway, an average of 44mph, so I was happy with

"Wooley's" performance. l think the mpg wasaround 26127. but I lost a receipt and calculated itfrom memory

Thursday & Friday were spent watching theshow take shape, but after a nice fry-up onSaturday, I leathered the car ofi and drove overtothe display area, where I was positioned next toan Austin 1100 with 2 Singer Gazelles on the otherside. l'm afraid l didn t speak to the owners. as Iwent off to find any bargajns around the stalls. There were some good displays in the arena too,and I was particularly impressed by the KiteFlyers.

Unfodunately, the pictures were lost from mytrusty Nokia phone. Later, I was persuaded todrive round lhe arena, whrch was quite amusingowing to the monotone voice of the announcer.

Sunday dawned brght and clear, and in thedisplay area I was placed next to a 1972 Austin1800, Club Member Colin Mace with his 1966Wolselev 6/110. and Sharon Corbin with her 1962Austin Cambridge 460. Not bad ior an"accidental" line-up. Other COOC type cars I sawwere 2 Oxfords, a 1962 belonging to W Spoonerof Halesworth and the 1969 model of GeoffWarman. Furtheron were a 1974 Morris 1800 anda 1964 VDP Princess, a car I would love to own,but space and money rule it out. In the VintageCar section were various other Wolseleys, and asmart looking black'1955 A50 Cambridge.

I find Henham to be a very friendly weekendshow, with plenty to see and do. lf you're stayingovernight, there's the Fairground and a Beer Tentwith lvlusic on both Friday and Saturday evenings, great Fish & Chips, and a good selection of otherfood available. Atrip to nearby Southwold makesa nice evening otf site, with a range of pubs andeateries there. lvlaybe a future Club Rally venue??

l'rn cedain that lwas told the Oxford was previously owned by Brake Bfothers, thenow nationai frozen food company, whose orlgins were in Lenham, Keni, lt wasapparently used as a Company/Directors car, and was only about a year old whenGrandad bought it.

As a 14115 year old, I used to go to Nan & Grandad every weekend and schoolholiday, having been brought up by them forn 1 941 to 1 950. There was a small orchardwith an o1d Annv Nissen Hut, with double doors litted one end, which was used as theGarage. li still had the cast iron stove, with the uon pipe chjmney central at the otherend, and VKE fltted in with about 15 inche8 to spare behind her io close the doors. Now ihis was where I learned to drive alone. I have no ldea how many mlles I did upand down the orchard, and I was always asked to "put the car away, Bud". {Neverknew why he called rne Budlu

The old folks weekly treat, in those days, was Saturday Evening at "The Candle

House", properly known then, and stil s known as "The Alma" at Painters Forstal about5 or 6 m es away. One particular Saturday, Grandad had 2 or 3 over lhe B, andsuddenLy said "lthinkyou'd better drive us home tonlght, Bud, l've had a drop to muchto dink". Grandad, you've iust made a teenage ad's dreams come truoll A 5 or 6 rniledrve on proper roadsll Woweell Success, and from ihen on, that was my regu afSaturday night job. A Puppy Dog with two tails had nothing on me.

Then came the latefu night when we got home, the oid folks got out where theplcture was taken, and I went to put VKE away. I drove in the garage, up to the castiron stove, hand brake on and switched ofi the engine. However, I hadn't gone in farenough, and couldnl cose the doors, so jumped back in, statted the engineand............shot forward, crashing through the stove and pushing it out ihrough thefront ofthe Nlssen Hut, whichwas smashed to blts. Who left the car in gear then????lwon't bother with all the details, but that big old Oxford came out of lt wlth abent eye ash and a semi-ckcular dent in the roof where the stove chlmney came down. That was a real life esson for me, 'll sav

Altholgh not best pleased, Grandad didn't ground me, nor stop me driving themhome aftef the pub outings. Doubtless this "illegal"drLvng helped me to pass my test at 17 yrs 2 monthsold, so I was forever grateful to hlm. However, he soldthe car when he stopped drlving in the early 70'switholt even asking me whether I wanted it, and Irernember being a bit miffed at the ume.

Recently, I visited the house where Nan & Grandadlived, and things have changed a lot, but i rnanaged toget "Wooley", nry 16/60 roughly where lhe Oxford wasparked, and had my photo taken there 100, How usoldies love to rerninisce.
