"Atru(f I{ouse, Stanf,ing B,oom On\"

To make an instant impact in someone's life (in a goodfriendly remarkable way) shows the true spirit and characterof someone who was brought up to be decent, honest andwarm hearted, and have the capabilities to give out, be wellliked, be loved, yet still be strong willed, private andnot be obtrusive in any way

Rare qualities nowadays, someone comingfrom an era of the troublesome war davs.when chivalry and camaraderie, respect, dignity, was a part of life, but allcombined to make a wonderfulcharacter, have a warm hearted likeablepersonality, very rare indeed, veryspecial to have known and witnessedand to have experienced this in one'sIife is unforgettable.

I first met Sheila in the process ofbuying the ex-Club Van, wanting topersonally know and see that mycheque was safely received. A big smile,"Hello, come in" greeted me . Les flaff'sdad) was in the hallway and instandy I feltat ease, the nerves had settled down and Ifelt warm and safe - strange really :

considering we had never met before (allSheila knew was that I was a Club Memberowning an A60 Van variant ie. my Sun-TorCaravanette and was here obtainins the CIub A60 PzCaravanette and was here obtainins the CIub A60 Panel Vantoo). There was an aura of warmth and welcome about theplace, a cup of tea led to a few morc, and soon sandwicheswere made, and a conversation fired up (Sheila recognisingthe fact the ex-Club Van was going to a good home). Yes, thiswas a happy house, little did I know this was to be a start ofbecoming another dear friend, and also myself beingremembered living far away in SE london.

I had heard that Sheila wasn't well, and had alwaystext,/spoken to Taff on other matters, but always enquired

"How's Mum doing?" and on a couple of occasions Taff wasactually with his family, ie. with Mum, Dad and Tracey, andmy message was instandy referred directly - "Mum, it's Leesaying hi, hope you get better real soon". Taff said Mumimmediately broke into a big smile, knowing she was being

thought of by other people - it was an honour to know thatmy 'get well soon" was a helping tonic, witnessed by Taff andthe family

Receiving the tragic news from Taff so soon after Sheila'spassing was a shock to the system. I was at work and

had to 'down tools and tal<e a break. that was the

Sheila was going to pull through.Plans were made, travelling up to

Ipswich on the Sunday Monday startedve1 hea'"y, knowing we werc eoing tosay farewell to a wonderful lady; I putthe Club logo on the SunTor,hopefully offering compassionatesupport, not only from the Club butprivately too, but I need not haveworried, as instant recognition at theChapel Gate reassured Les, Taff and

Tracey that we were here for Sheila.TaIl himself was quite understandably

under strain, but once mingling withfamily, friends and recognising CIub

Members, he readjusted his composure, tooka deep breath, clenched both fists, shook

himself down and did a sterling job payingtribute to his dear Mum's life. Tall's first words werc

" Blimey, a full house, standing room only. Mum would havebeen chu{fed to pieces to know she was loved by so many"Indeed she was. Taff's ability to cope under intense pressureI'm sure is a trait passed down from Sheila, as quoted earliershe came from troublesome days of \'{W2, but always got thejob done (holding the family together, keeping a happy houseetc.). Well done Taff, you did your Mum real proud.

After the service, one could be drawn to the wonderfulbright colours of a huge abundance of flowers (the first hymnwas 'All things bright and beautiful", which tells yousomething.) Amongst these was a nice touch organised by ourfriends at NTG - a bold re d BMC Rosette in flowers(representing our Club). Paul was here, and he and his staffhad provided this wonderful tribute. This caught Taff andTracey's attention, a great gesture, nice one Paul. ConradParr had made the long trip from Bristol (another familyfriend). He had been shocked and saddened, as he had onlyspoken to Sheila days before. Incidentally Conrad, yourcompany was greatly appreciated, we stood together in thecongrgation, both of course very down and sad, but moralsupport either way got us through a di{ficult day Colin Smithwas also there with his Riley and Geoff Baker, his spendidWolseley 6/l l0 carrying out chauffeuring duties for theGillingham family There were two hearses, one for Sheila, and an additional one full of flowers.

I'm sure that all Club Members' nationwide thoughts andwishes go out to the Gillingham family remembering Sheila, and of course everyone else who knew her.

You can always replace a Finance O{ficer, acting in thatrole, but to find someone with Sheila's personality and calibreis another issue. A wonderful dear ladv Rest in Peace ourbeloved Sheila.

NAIIONAL RALLY 2OT2FLEETWOOD FESTIVAL OF TRANSPORT

The Gambridge-oxford 0wners Club became the first car club ever to hold their]'lational Rally at the Fleetwo0d Festival of Transport on Sunday l5th July.

Sti I often known by its or ginal name of Tram Sunday, the Fest val of Transport is anannual event that sees the centre ofthis h stor c coastaltown in the Nofth West of Englandclosed off and turned nto a giant ce ebration of motorised transport. W th shops andrestaurants all open for business, plenty of road s de sta ls and a parade lt offers more todo than many other ral ies and members cena n y enloyed seeing Fleetwood; its awardwinning fish and chip shop definitely drew plenty of praisel

The record crowds a so en oved the c ub's d sp av on what turned out to be beautifulsunny day despite th s year's h gh ra nfal . Lancash re Area SecretaryRob Parr and his team did a great job organ zing the event andproduced unique hand made prizes of ceramic plates us ng originalBl\,4C handbook artwork. These were very popular and were presentedto our winners by ong standing club member [,4iss Benny Lea.

A retired HGV/PSV drver Benny only recently sold her l970 Wolseley16/60 because, at twice ts age, she was unab e to cont nue to give itthe love and care she had avished on it for many years. However shest I enjoys attend ng events n her more modern Fover 45 and drove up

from Nlalvern for the weekend tohelp, say ng in her pre event etterto organ zer Rob Parr that shewou d be 'avaiiable to move roadsigns or ist regrstrations in a force8 gale, which lgather is normalon the Fyde Coast'. She thenadded, referring to the road runalong the Fylde coast onSaturday, 'maybe someone couldgve me a i11. I rather fancy sittingn the back of a 6/1 10 waving I kethe Queen but won't be fussy'.She got her wish, travell ing inConrad Parrs lovely blackexar-t'tp e.

The overall winner of the club'sBL Hertage Cup Jor most popularcar was Stewart Peters fromPeterborough with his VandenPlas Pr ncess 4-lltre F. This is thefrst time this nrodel has ever wonthe award.

Page 7: RR138

This years cooc National Rally was hosted by us here in Lan.cashire. when we were looking

for a venue, We decided that we wou|d choose somewhere With p|enty more to do than just

admire and discuss our fantastic club cars. After various visits to a number of venues we decided

that the Fleetwood Festival of Transport was ideal, and after a few of us met up for sgndayIunch we started on the task of organising. The festival (or Tram Sunday as its affectiohatelycalled) has been in existence for some 26 years, and is a huge gathering of historic vehicles

including lorries, buses, vans, cars and motorcycles, all within the unusual setting of a Victorian

seaside town on the Lancashire coastline. For some ofthe Lancashire area Members, the weekend started on the Friday afternoon where

we set up our tents at the campsite, conveniently located within walking distance of the local

hostelry where we were able to fine tune the arrangements for the following few days events. We r,,iere very happy to see the sun shining on the Saturday morning, as this was the day that

we were holdi;g a ro;d run from Fleetwood, down the Fylde coast through Blackpool and on.to

Lytham st Anne-'s for the best fish and chips known to humanity! Arriving at the departure point

it'was great seeing 11 Club Cars already parked up and ready for the ofi (pretty sure I wasn't

late, it was purely the enthusiasm of COOC members!)some weeks 6efore the rally I had been contacted by member Benny Lea who despite not

owning a car at the moment was very keen to take part, and she asked kindly if lwas able to

frovid"e a vehicle for her to travel as a passenger in.... She speci1ed.a Wolseley 6/1 10 but wasn't

ioing to be fussy! thankfully Conrad was in attendance with his, and he was delighted to provide

iis c"hautteur sliilts for the day! On the Saturday night we laid on a free BBQ at the campsite,

which was extremely well received by Members and their families. The rally day itself started with gr;at weather once again, and when we arrived at Adelaide

Street in Fleetwood at 7i41am, thJre were at least a couple of cars already parked up, one of

which was John Gallon in his 460 countryman who had set out from surrey at 1 am in order to

drive the 270 miles and arrive in time! Fantasiicl cars continued to arrive for a couple of hours

and by midday everyone that was coming had arrived. It wis the flrst tirire a classic car club had held its National Rally at Fleetwood Festival of

Transport, and by all accounts both from individuals and the features in the national classic carpress, was a st;rming success. I would very much like to thank all of the Lancashire area

members for their support and time dedicated to the event, we should do it again, how about

2O22?l I would also like to extend sincere thanks from the Lancashire area group to all the

Members that came and supported the event, We hope you had a great time, We certain|y did!

last year, so we knew we were in good company In all we had five Club Cars,

one Triumph 2.5 estatc and a Daimler V12, just a nice number lor when it

came to parking at the various places we visited. As always, Steve leaves

nothine to chance and his vast knowledge of the area includes all the car

parks as well. The weather was pelfect cach day which I am led to believe was

unusual for this part of Wales. It was so hot one afternoon that Joanneenjoyed a paddle in thc sea, unfortunately I did not have my camera with

me.We left Wales on the Friday morning and I made a very bad decision to

travel home via the M6. Unfortunately there was a bad accident around the

Prcston arca and we had to take a detour o1I the motorway We eventually

arrived home at 6.30pm. We did over 700 trouble-free miles altogether in the

Vanden PIas, which returned 20.5 mpg and used 2 pints of oil lVe had a

most enjoyable time in Wales with good company and a bit of banter in the

Unicorn Hotel each night. Our thanks go to Steve andJoanne who obviously

spend a lot of time planning these tours. Hoping to meet everybody again

next year in cornwall Ron G'bertson

After of careful planning including putt ing a detaiLed route plan it was most of us met up for a at the Rock viewpoint and ater inand accommodation l ist together and ensur ng we had a Club Stand atMoffat, the Scoltlsh Tour was fina y upon us.

We drove up to Scotch Corner to meet Werner and Priska Beyeler whohad travelled 700 miles from Switzerland to take part n the trip We werejoined by Dave Stretton and Paul Dryden with a brace of lront wheel drive'BMC

A great soc al evening washad by al l , start ing with a meal at the wor d famous Star Inn, which is thenarrowest pub followed by a lew pints n varlous hosteiries around Motfat

Sunday was the maln day for the ral ly and we were joined on the c ubstand by Jim W lson Al lan L4cquerter, Andrew Shortel, A an Logan RonGilbertson, John Churchi l l and Stewart Lesl ie to name but a few The ral lywas I s LsJa br a-r self with elarnp es ol .u<t aooJt every popJlar ca'ever made and an enthusiasm for the cars only found in Scotland Ourawards were presented to Al lan [,4cwh rter for his Rlley 4/72 and GeoffCodling 2nd pr ze The dlstance awafd went without question to Werner andPr ska Beyeler for their Oxlord, whlch by thjs time had covered approx 820miles to attend the rally. Werner aLso won an award from the organisers ofthe l/lotfat rally.

Bv now it was tlme for our hardy little group to head north on the first legof our tour of the Hlghlands and ls ands.

Fjve cars headed out on to the [/]74 lead by Joanne and J in our trusty oldOxford Traveller close y followed by M ke Davis in his 460, then Werner &Pr ska in their Oxford Stuart Leslie in his Wo seley fol owed by Erlc & Jeanin the Triumph 2500.

We would meet Allan Mcwhider at Hamiton services after he had pickedup some spares somewhere enroute. A an Logan wou d join us on skyetomofiow in his l\4agnette This completed our merry little band We arrivedln Ca ander after a pleasant and uneventful journey in t me for a lish supperin the park by the river.

Monday dawned (well actua y i t didn't rea y get dark) f ne and sunnyand after a ohoto shoot n the car park we set off on our very scenlc drivenorth to Skye, cal l ing at G encoe, the Commando Monument near SpeanBridoe and the E len Donan Castle en route. We also stopped n Fort Will amto reluel at Morrison's and th s caused both Eric and I running problemsfurther up the road. l t seems cheap supermarket Juel contains ethano inoreater ouanti t ies than the normal 5% found in most of today's petroloverdosing with my patent mixture of redex and 2 stroke oil soon cured theproblem and the Oxford ran smooth y once more Stuck out on a single-lrack road at the most nonherly tip of Skye with a misfiring Oxford was a littleworrying to say the easlL

Tuesday was a free day for everyone to enjoy Skye in thelr own way As

Portree for a noggln and a naiter.Wednesday saw us heading back to the ma n and flrst to Plockton, which

was the setting ior the h tTV serles "Hamish flcBeth" staring Robert CaryleThen on to the stunning "Beaach Na Ba" pass, which for rne was thehighl ight of the tour. Some of you may have seen thjs featured on the TVd(i | ing the winter months or may have been over i t your selves. This ls theUK's 2nd highest road and probably one of the steepest and narrowestmounta n passes wlth many very t ight hairpin bends. Only the Harknottspass in the Lakes comes c ose to this one. Any way we all made it to thetopat 2O0O feet without mishap and more lmportant y back down again Whata sight our convoy of farina's and Eric's Tr umph made. A bus stopped atthe vlewpoint car park and i t 's occupants seemed more interested in ourcars than looklng at Loch K shorn far down below

The wealher was clos ng n so we headed back down to sea or Lochleve and all d ved n to the Waterside caf6 in Loch Carron. Joanne and I leftthe parly here as we were heading down to Onlch and would be iolned bythe rest of the group on Thursday evening.

On eaving Loch Carron l\4ike Davis found the descent of "Bealach NaBa" had taken i ts to on his 460 brak ng system. A cyl inder or maybe twohad blown and the master cy lnder was empty and he had very l i t t le in theway of brakes. Topping the f u d up and pumplng the pedal brought somedegree of peda pressure back and he was able to drve back to Skye and

loin us at Corran Bunkhouse on Thursday. I b ed the brakes and restoredpeda pressure and with careful regular f luld checks and subsequent topups he was ab e to complete the tour safe y. I had come prepared withcy inder rubber kits, hoses and f luid etc and ol course many more sparesbut fortunatey none were needed.

A good nlght was had by al l ln the Four Seasons Bar at nchree thateven ng.

Friday saw us head ng south along the shores of Loch Linnhe to Easdaleon the lsle ol Se I w th a photo shoot enroute at "The Br dge Over TheAtlantic". Arr iving at Easda e whlch was the sett ing lor the 1960s f i lmstarr lng Bi l Travers and Virginia McKenna "The R ng of Brlght Watef ' wewere gree.ed oy I re surs^ 1e ald everyo^e sperl a haooy l^ou' or soexploring this pretty west coast f ishing vi l lage. Then we headed to Inverarywhich included a very scenlc drive along the shores of Loch Linnhe, LochEtlve over the pass of Brander and along the shores of Loch Awe beforedescend ng down to Inverary on the shores of Loch Fyne.

The weaiher decided to spoi our afteTnoon so we headed back to Corranfor our f inal night at the Four Seasons.

Saturday morning saw a much-dep eted convoy of three cars headinghome over Rannoch lvloor and along the shores of Loch Lomond belorehitting the motorway network al Glasgow Did I enjoy the tour in the end?Yes of course I didl l I get great pleasure from organising and eading ourclub tr ips. lwould be lying f lsaid lwasn't dlsappointed more memberscouldnl join us l ike ast year but we st iL had a great t lme

Our Farlna Forum webs te has been active s nce February 2008 and one of ils ma n featuresis the abi i ty to share photos l t 's so popuarthatwe've now amassed ovef 10,300 pictureswhlch f printed and la d end-lo-end, would stretch over 12 m es

l 'm sure most of us have pict lres in shoeboxes, or even on a PC, that are stofed witn nothought about how to f nd thern again quick y One usef ul f eat!re of the Forum s p cture ga erys the abi ity to "tag a photo. Th s is the equ va ent of wr t ng a note on the back of your old paperphotos. These tags can ihen be used to search for a photo at a ater date.

n an dea wor d people wou d tag the r own pictures but I rea ised that this isn't go nt tohappen, at east not with any degree of accuracy or consistency. So, had a d lemma - do wesimp y continle etllng our albums expand into an ever growing v riua shoebox, or do we dosometh ng to bring them to ife?

One thing was sLrre the job was getting b gger every day so I dec ded to take acton Thefirst step was dec ding whal tags to Lrse. They had to be consistent and enough to make the

PRACTICAT MOTORIST AND MO]OR CYCI.IST

appear in a search but nol too many as to make it lime consum ng lo enter. So declded onthe fo lowing - Make, lvlode Reglslfat on Number (without spaces) Colour (bas c primary co ourssuch as Red, B ue and Green)with an addit ional tag i f the car is DUO TONE pa nt and f naly a note fit was an Engine or Interior pictufe.

The ast two tags were used because most of oLlr photos are of the outs de of cars; having Inter orand Engine tags alows us to search for those types of piclures.

The next prob em was who was to undertake this mammoth task? | put out an appea on the Forumfor any members who cou d he p and quick y assembled a smal team of volunteer Archiv sts The10,000 photos were spread over 500 pages (20 photos per page) Each page was numbered, but newp ctures were being added al thelme, sowedecdedtostartwththeoldestphotoslrstandworkourway back towa.ds the atest ones. The 500 pages were sp it into batches ol 10 (200 photos per batch)and a commLrna spreadsheet was set up so that Archiv sts cou d record their |ame and start/ enddates for each batch. This process started at the beg nning of AL-tgust 2012 and was completed m d-October A fantastc effort and my thanks go to Mark Shep ey George Weatherley and an Lee lor altheir hard wofk

So now wete ready for members lo start reaping the benefits ol all this hard work. The searching of photos can work n a number of ways -1) Yau nay be casually brawsing same pictures and see a car lhat intercsts yau. ln the battan ight-hand coner af the piclure will be a list of tags - including the Regislratian Nunber Click an lhe tagand allpjclues featwing that car willbe displayed.2) Yau may wanl ta see what an Auslin Westninstet engine bay laaks like - ga to the PHOTaS pageand enter WESTMINSTER ENGINE in the search box and you'll t'ind them all (currcntly 54!)3) Yau may be wandering what a Moftis Oxt'ard laaks like in a blue paint. SAVING , .AUSSIE' '

BY CLTFF BouLToN

This car was put away in what the farmerclassed as a garage in 1991, and heunfortunately passed away soon afterwards. His son drove it a few times, but 1991 was it's last year on the road.

It was moved to a barn when the garuge roof was found to have collapsed, then moved againto another barn when the space was needed. Moving involved being towed by a tractor, thenpushed in with a large straw bale on the front of the tractor.

The last MOT dated Nov 11th 1991, gives the mileage as 37,569, and the speedo when I boughtit read 37,910.1 was approached by the son at a show in Kent back in July who asked if I knew ofanybody that wanted to buy a Cambridge Estate, and that was it. I went to see the car with myson, and you can guess lhe resl I just had to buy her. "Aussie" is now back on the road as a rollingrestoration, with a fair bit of welding carried out. The engine is very nice and she drives just fine!

Westy Rolls Again!A heartstopping momentduring testing for this year's Goodwood Revival

Meeting as John Young's popular Austin A95 Westminster 'Hardy Herbert'clips the tyres and rolls to destruction, as captured by photogapher MarkAmor and fealured on the excellent 'Classic and SDortcar' website. Johnfortunalely escaped without injury.

This is not the first time this car has rolled at this spot because JohnFitzpatrick rolled lhe car during ihe Bevivalin 2008- admittedlywith someassistance trom an A35 (see BRl22, p.l5),

Sadly the Westminster, which was to be co-driven by Kenny Breck, wastoo badly damaged to be repaired tor the event and is almosl certainlybeyond saving.
