What an interesting winter, Vermont never failsto keep us on our toes! Although we didn’t havethe snow most of us were hoping for, Giorgetti

Arena made up for it with a great season of recreation onice. We had more people taking advantage of this facilitythan ever before. With a strong winter of skating andcurling behind us we’ve made the transition from ice toindoor turf. Now in full swing for the second year theword is out that Giorgetti has some of the finest indoorturf in New England. The facility is busy for over sixtyhours a week and this year we have added several newdrop-in programs for preschool age through adults. Ifyou haven’t already, stop down and check it out fromnow till the end of April. Look for the Pine Hill BikeShop located inside the Giorgetti Arena to open soonand shortly after around the middle of May dust off yourskateboard and tryout Flip Side Skate Park.

Giorgetti isn’t the only facility sporting a lot of action. The Godnick Adult Center has been a buzz of activityfor years, with numerous adult activities taking placethroughout the week. We have exercise and danceclasses, yoga, lunch bunch group, knitting, RSVP bonebuilders, ballroom dancing, book discussion group, theOsher Lifelong Learning Institute Lecture Series, movies, bingo, meals served throughout each week and muchmore. Contact Lori Hickey and she will be happy to helpyou find something that interests you. The energy in thebuilding is awesome, come experience it for yourself!

I’m happy to say that we are making progress with allof the repairs needed in the parks affected by the storm“Irene”. Bob Peterson and his staff consisting of JaySiliski, Jeff Pratt, Steve Canney, Tyler Dahlin, Ed Griffiths,Kyle Bourgeois and occasionally Keith Wight continueto amaze me in their ability to accomplish a variety ofdifferent responsibilities really well. We are fortunate tohave such a diversified team that gets the job done.

This department is still in a state of limbo with ourmain offices temporarily housed at the Godnick AdultCenter facility. Programming has been constant, butstrained in some instances. However, Cindi Wight andthe program directors, Lori Hickey, Jay Thomas andApril Cioffi aided by Brooke Towslee, Mary Markowskiand Lori Pinkowski continue to work extra hard toproduce quality programming and administrativesupport with the temporary facility resources availableto them. Once again over the course of the summersome of the programs will be staged at interim locationsand although they are not necessarily the best solutionfor the long-term we are grateful to the organizationsthat have provided these short term answers. We areall working hard to make your experience with us apositive one and we appreciate your patience as wecontinue to navigate through this transition period. Weanxiously await a more settled future!

Thank you to the Rutland Herald and to the businessesthat choose to support our department by advertising inthis publication. Don’t forget to look for weekly updatesevery Wednesday in the Herald and visit our websiteat rutlandrec.com for news on ongoing and upcomingprograms and events. Join us for a program or just getout and recreate in a park. Let the Rutland Recreationand Parks Department help you enjoy your summer!
