This year, our chapter participated in Lansing‟s American Cancer Society‟s Relay for Life event which was held on June 5-6th at the Lansing Catholic High School. Relay for Life is 24 hour walking event where teams of people take shifts walking to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Our initial goal of raising $2,000 was well surpassed by the efforts of our team, Luminiara sales and a bake sale that occurred during the event. Also, Andrea Hoard petitioned Fazoli‟s Restaurant on Saginaw to hold three days where 15% of sales (with a coupon) would go towards our fundraising goal. In total, we raised
$$$222,,,999444222...666666!!!!!!!!!
During the event, we decided to go with an 80‟s cartoon theme, and many of the team members wore t-shirts with various cartoon characters on them. The campsite was also decorated with various cartoon shows from the 80‟s. In all, 17 members plus friends and family
came out to support the cause for fighting cancer.

President’s Report
We’re Halfway There… Don‟t worry – I won‟t break into Bon Jovi‟s “Livin‟ on a Prayer”, though I‟ve been known to do that (seriously, if you‟ve ever been in the car next to mine, you‟ve probably seen it!). But, we‟re halfway through 2009 and what better way to celebrate our successes than some shout outs?
At the end of our second quarter of the year, our chapter was at growth. Thanks to the hard work of our membership, we currently have a growth number of +11 for a total of 63 members in the Lansing Jaycees. This is a fantastic accomplishment and I have been happy to see so many of our new members getting involved and coming out to events. We‟ve also had an amazing activation rate – so far this year, we‟ve seen 86% of our members – I fully expect that we‟ll be seeing everyone by the end of the year!
We had so many great and big events in the second quarter, including the Easter Egg Hunt, the 1st Annual Beer Bus Extravaganza, Beekman Center Fence Building, White Water Rafting, Relay for Life and lots more. It was a busy quarter, but we accomplished so much as a chapter.
A challenge was set out to our chapter for the month of June to recruit 5 new members. We met that goal AND surpassed it, recruiting 6 new members. As a result, Angela Fossi and I received pies in our faces at our GMM/Picnic this month. Please be on the lookout for another challenge coming soon!
We have lots of great events coming up, including Children‟s Shopping Spree, Camping, Texas Hold „Em - and we‟re always looking for more. If you have ideas for projects, feel free to talk to any board member regarding them. We love new project ideas!
We are halfway through an already fantastic year, and I have no doubt that we can keep up the amazing work that we‟ve been doing. Every single member of our organization is important, and it‟s also important to take our group and share it with the rest of the community. We‟ve been doing a great job at that and I look forward to seeing the accomplishments of the rest of the year!

A Message from the Membership VP
This has been a great summer for the Lansing Jaycees. I want to thank all of you for the great attendance at our recent events. It has been wonderful to see so many prospects, new members and existing members having fun and working together. Speaking of new members, I want to thank all of the new members that joined in June and the members that helped spread the word about the Jaycees. You won the June Membership challenge and as a result it was great to start out the month of July with some great tasting pie in my face. Did you hear the news? Andrea Hoard is our new Membership Director for 2009. We will be working together on several upcoming projects and goals. I want to welcome her to the board and I look forward to working with her. Please extend your congratulations to her the next time you see or hear from her. We will be focusing our efforts on recruiting at local apartment complexes. The Michigan Jaycees have a challenge to work with apartment managers to publicize the Jaycees and set up Mixers to encourage people that may be new to the community to check us out. Let me know if you live in an apartment that would be a good fit for this type of event. Here are some upcoming events to keep in mind during July. We are planning a trip to the Aquatic Center (date TBD). We also have our annual camp trip coming up July 23rd- 26th. I have started to work with our newer members on our first Jumpstart project of 2009. Stay tuned for more information. Let‟s keep building the buzz! Occupation: Speech-Language Pathologist, Early Intervention Program, Jackson Intermediate School District Relationship Status: Lives with boyfriend, Blaine Cressman in Lansing, MI Dream Job: It would have to be something with food & cooking. I would love to own a breakfast/lunch restaurant or cater, but I think I would hate the hours, so I will keep cooking as a hobby. Favorite Movie &/or Book: A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Sound of Music, Napoleon Dynamite, various documentaries Favorite Type of Music: Eclectic tastes from Rockabilly to Bluegrass and everything in between. First car: 1990 gray 2 door Chevrolet Cavalier. I bought it new after I graduated from MSU to move to graduate school in AZ. After all the rebates, I think it cost me $7000. Why I joined the Jaycees: To meet people and become involved in my community after moving back to the Lansing area in 2001.

A Message from the Community VP
Community Volunteer Events - On the Horizon August 15th – Children’s Shopping Spree Time to take the kids back to school shopping! We will meet at 7:15 AM at the water tower in the Sears parking lot (Frandor) on Saturday, August 15th. Volunteers will receive the address of the child they will be shopping with. You will then head over to Kohl‟s on the west side for some back to school shopping. After breakfast it is on to McDonalds for some nourishment for the children. After breakfast and the children are returned home, anyone interested can meet at Clara‟s for Lunch. If you would like to donate school supplies to the cause, please bring them to the General Membership Meeting on August 4th. Please see your weekly Jaycee Juice for items that are needed. CHILDREN’S SHOPPING SPREE is just around the corner… This is one of the most rewarding projects the Lansing Jaycees has been fortunate to hold each year. The children are selected with help from the Lansing Police Athletic League. Jaycee volunteers will take 25 kids to Kohls on Saturday, August 15th where they will receive discounts on purchases. After shopping, breakfast will be provided at McDonalds for the kids before returning them home, then interested volunteers can meet at Clara‟s for lunch.
CAN’T MAKE IT SHOPPING? You can still support this event by donating items from the Shopping Spree Wish List! Bring your donated items to the General Membership Meeting on August 4th (7PM at Trippers in Frandor) or contact Chairperson Sheryl Soczek (517-884-2413; [email protected]) to donate your items. This past month has brought us a couple of fun events. We held our First Annual International Food event which was a huge success! So
much so that there may be a bonus International Food event late this year! We also held GYFO at Dusty’s which had a great turn out. We’ll
be having a special GYFO in July at the Nuthouse on the 30th to be followed by a trip to the Lugnuts game across the street. We’ll also be
having our monthly Book Club on the 19th with the theme of “A Summer Fling”

Henry Ward Beecher Do you know the power of a well-placed, sincere expression of thanks? Do you remember to say “Please?” when you ask for something? The old adage to remember “Please” and “Thank You” isn‟t as outdated as you might think. Think about it for a minute. When someone asks you to do something (pass the salt, give them your first-born, whatever it may be…), are you more apt to comply if they state their request politely or if they make a demand? Based on your answer to that, how do you think you come across to people when you need something? My mom was always one to suggest that killing with kindness is best for both parties. I have to agree. So, what about thanking people? You know, that person didn‟t have to hold the door for you; they did that as a courtesy and should be recognized for that. Certainly, a friendly wave is in order when someone is courteous to you while driving. Has someone gone above and beyond for you at work? Did you know you could make their day by sending a quick email thanking them for their time? Sometimes they are just doing their job, but that simple gesture of thanks helps you build a better relationship with that person. So, here‟s a challenge for you: for an entire week, practice thanking people. Every time someone opens a door, holds an elevator, doesn‟t ram their cart into you at the store, stop and thank them. Can you imagine what a better place the world might be?

The 1st Annual International Foods and Wine Tasting was held at the home of Chairperson Arya Amirahmadi (773-793-1467;
[email protected]) on June 13th, 2009 and had a great turn out! In addition to Arya‟s signature sangria, there was an array of food & beverages from all over the world. Not only Jaycees, but friends, neighbors, and co-workers attended this event to taste a variety of foods from different cultures and share their favorite selections with others. Great Job Arya on an outstanding event!

In July, the Lansing Jaycees Book Club continued the theme-based reading selection strategy we pioneered in May with baseball books and in June with wine. July‟s theme was "A Summer Fling." Romance? Road trip? Summer camp hijinks? Open choice!!!
Everyone was able to choose their own poison and get together in the height of
summer at the East Lansing Cold Stone Creamery on
Sunday, July 19 for conversation, camaraderie and ice cream.
