A technical guest lecture meeting was held on 15th February 2017 at 6.00
pm in IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The topic of the day was
on “Science behind our customs and ceremonies and the Vastu”. Er P
R Seshadri, FIE, Past Chairman, IE(I), TNSC welcomed the gathering and
introduced the Chief Guest Er S Ramanathan, FIE, Consulting Engineer,
Chennai. Er S Ramanathan delivered the lecture on the above topic with
power point presentation.
In his speech, Superstition and Belief are By-products of an adaptive learning
strategy. Adaptive means having an ability to change to suit different
conditions. Our ancients laid down rules and regulations for wise conduct
of life as per the then prevailing conditions. These became Customs and also
ceremonies - custom meaning ‘a way of behaving or a belief that has been
established for a long time’. Following these without understanding the
implication is known as superstition. Hence we must understand the science
behind the impositions and try to be adoptive to the changing scenario.
Thoppukarnam: The tips of our ears are very sensitive and acts as route
cause to other sensory activities and there by, if we rub or hold the ear tips
frequently we get some sort of relief. Activates the acupuncture points at right
and left ears thereby activating the right and left brains. Foreign universities
call it as super brain yoga. Heat therapy is most commonly used for re-
habilitation purposes. Nicola Tesla proved heat waves @ 6-8Hz cures most
of the brain diseases. There are about 600 diseases of the nervous system.

Rengaraju, delivered the lecture on the above topic with power point pre-
sentation.
In his lecture, he mentioned that he chose this topic to bring awareness to
the public through the audience present. Sea/Ocean is a vast area compared
to the land area possessing lot of wealth. Offshore Renewable energy is
available in the form of Surface waves, Tides', underwater currents, wind,
Solar and Thermal energy. Highlighted wave energy advantages and dis-
advantages. He showed the Wave energy availability around the globe high-
lighting with Indian context. He mapped the Indian progression starting
from IIT, 1980 including IIT, Chennai involvements. Discussed about tech-
nological and Environmental barriers. Talked about the Werpo's Israeli energy
developer's 10MW project in Gujarat which is to be expanded across the
coast of India, also about the Tidal energy installation at Gujarat. Touched
regulatory scheme on the coast and ocean. Concluded by saying that the
process need to be simplified for the progress of this technology including
conducive regulatory process and rapid deployment of proto types and
research facility.

Theechatti cures many such disorders if practiced periodically, not once a
year. Now modern treatment has come to replace the Theechatti. Astrology,
Palmistry, Numerology etc: all the above are not exact sciences. They are
statistical deductions after observing the lives of thousands of people over
a long period. Intellectuals who can predict are gone for ever. Now it is only
speculation of the truth. Fire Walking is just to remove the heel spur and
foot corns. Now non-invasive laser treatments cure these, and performing
fire walking once in a year is out of ignorance and superstition. Pal kudam
is carried mainly by ladies for getting proper match, begetting wise chil-
dren and for abundance and prosperity. This is borne out of faith and quite
welcome. Kavadi Attam is a physiotherapic act. Piercing cheek and any
such are false austerities according to the Gita. Mud Bath or Sethandi is
to cure skin diseases. It should be done regularly. Saturn or Sani is god
of agriculture. The first Saturn temple in the world was constructed in Rome
and in India at Kuchanoor near Theni. Annual festivals take place in these
places after the harvests. Astrologers have spoiled the image of Saturn.
Angapradakshina is a self inflicted torture according to the Gita.
Namaskara in Hinduism means “I bow to the divine in you”. Cat crosses
the road to catch its prey in the opposite house. Considering it bad omen
is a superstition. Kolam is a full body exercise. Our grandmothers never
wore specs even at 80+. Kolams render glamour to the house. Lizards make
noise for communication, to catch prey, when predators are at site and for
sex. When it looses its grip it falls down. All other attributes are supersti-
tious. Yellow color has more clarity of all the billions of colors. That is why
yellow thread was used to carry Mangalyam. Mangalyam and Metti are
the marks of a married woman. They mark out ‘you must not lust after her
beauty in thine heart’. Metti on the 2nd toe revitalizes the productive or-
gans. Crow feeding: Waste food materials at home have to be disposed of.
Crows will carry away without Spoiling the site. Hence this practice. Oil
bath is to remove dirt on the hairs on the head by breaking surface tension.
Hot oil and hot water and lathering materials must be used. Now with
shampoo, it is simplified.
The ideal gas law states pv=mrT i.e P V is proportional to T. Sp heat of
earth and stone is 800 J, of water 4000 J and of air 1000 J. Lower the specific
heat quicker they heat up and cool down rapidly, the reverse is true for
substances with higher sp.ht. Asia has the largest land mass. During summer
the Himalayan plateau and the Thar desert and adjoining land mass in India
and Tibet get heated up quickly and so the air above. As per the ideal gas
law when temperature increases the volume of the air above increases and
the pressure falls down causing depression. This creates the South west
Monsoon and travels north upto the Vindyas, due to the W-E spin of the
earth, its tilt and the Coriolis effect, it turns east and goes upto Japan and
from there it becomes south east monsoon and touches Bengal , Assam and
ends in the Himalayan plateau. During winter the effect is opposite, starting
from the Himalayas and ends in the Arabian sea. This is called the North
East monsoon. Nowhere else in the world we have such monsoons. Monsoon
is derived from the Arabic word mawsim meaning season. These seasonal
wind and rain was observed by our wise men of the past and they framed
guidelines to have a comfortable Vasasthalam to suit then prevailing living
conditions protected from the monsoon effect. Sasthra means guidelines.
Vastu Sastra means guidelines to have a comfortable Vasasthalam. For
example: Don’t take waste water and soil water such that it ends in Kanni
or Eesaniam. In those days everything was taken along open drains and due
to the monsoon winds foul smell and mosquitoes will enter into the house.
Now pipes and that too buried pipes carry the waste and soil waters and
connected to the sewer or street drain. Hence the imposition of the Vastu
need not be followed. Like this scientific explanations can be given for all
the guidelines. Hence in the modern ways of living, modern comforts,
scientific developments and in a nutshell under the present scenario, the
provisions of the Vasthu Sastra can be overlooked.
Er P R Seshadri, FIE, Past Chairman, IE(I), TNSC presented the memento
to the Chief Guest Er S Ramanathan. Er K P Sathyamurthy, MIE, Committee
Member, Civil Engineering Division, IE(I), TNSC proposed the vote of
thanks. About 60 members participated in the program.
