35th National Convention of

Electrical Engineers and National

Seminar on “Storing Energy for a

Sustainable Future – Future Energy

in any Isolated World” at

Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai.

From the Chairman’s Desk....

Dear Fellow Engineers,

Once again I am extremely happy to

share my thoughts with all of you. When

I thought what is next after becoming an

active members of IEI, developed a

habit of attending IEI programs once in

a month, integration of all Engineering

is the Way of life, I realised that defi-

nitely we all together achieved sustainability by being

existence for 100 years, and now it is the time think “beyond

imagination”. Today’s modern technology and science &

digital innovations gives abundant capacity to think beyond

imagination.

Due to digital revolution many times, we lose focus , lose

our original thought process, and we trying to copy others

and compete with each other. Each engineering discipline

is unique each engineer is unique.

We, IEI as multi discipline integrating body has to find a

ways and means to help each engineer to achieve his

potential, through customized integration of multiple engi-

neering disciplines. Real integration of everything hap-

pens, when we can celebrate our differences and pursue and

build and our own God given uniqueness and gifts.

On this Centenary Year, let everyone to re-define our-

selves, let us collaborate, let us celebrate, this is the time to

celebrate. I call upon all Corporate Members of IEI, all

Office bearers of IEI State and Local Centres, Past and

Present, future aspiring members, to think beyond imagina-

tion on the Centenary year. Let us set goals beyond Imagi-

nation, let us open to opportunity, let us develop willing-

ness to do the required to serve the humanity.

I am longing with love to meet all of you once again on

September 13th at Chennai on this Great Momentous , once

in a life time occasion.

Report of the One day Seminar on

Application of IOT and AI in Welding Technology in Indian Railways and

Industry 4.0 standards for manufacturing – Opportunity & Challenges in

Indian Railways

10.07.2019

The Institution of Engineers (India), Tamil Nadu State Centre has

organized an One day Seminar on Application of IOT and AI in

Welding Technology in Indian Railways and Industry 4.0 standards

for manufacturing - opportunity & challenges in Indian Railways

on 10 th July 2019 in IEI TNSC Auditorium, Chennai. The

Inauguration programme started with a prayer song. After the

Invocation, all the dignitaries lighted the lamp as the symbol of the

Indian Culture to make the moment an auspicious time. Er R

Ramdoss, Chairman welcomed the Chief Guest Er Sachin

Punetha, Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer /Wagon /CW/PER,

Indian Railways and the gathering. Chairman honoured the chief

guest with shawl and memento. Inaugural address was delivered

by the chief guest Er Sachin Punetha. Dr P S Kumar, Managing

Director, ETAsmart Private Ltd., and Dr V Balasubramanian,

Professor & Head, Department of Manufacturing Engineering,

Annamalai University were the guest speakers for the seminar.

Dr P S Kumar delivered his lecture on the theme “Industry 4.0

standards for manufacturing – opportunity & challenges in Indian

Railways”. As we all aware the first Industrial revolution (Industry

1.0) mechanisation through water and steam power happened

around 1784. Second Industrial revolution (Industry 2.0) happened

to produce through mass production and assembly lines using

electricity in 1870. Around 1969 the automation, PLCs and

computers were inducted in to manufacturing thereby created third

industrial revolution (Industry3.0) and now the fourth industrial

revolution (Industry 4.0) enhance it with using IoT (sensors attached

machines & products), AI and other smart and autonomous cyber

physical systems in manufacturing System. Coupling all these

manufacturing elements and making the data transfer through Cloud

computing & Use smart programmes to analyse the data and take

decision with or without human interventions. Industry 4.0 will

benefit the manufactures in various forms - it reduces cost by 20

to 30%, increase the efficiency by 15 to 20% and make our

manufacturing system is completely flexible. All the major

manufacturing companies are moving or in the process of migration

to this Industry 4.0 environment to make use of the benefits.

Industry 4.0 can be applied once our processes are well defined and

the manufacturing & operating systems are created and being

followed systematically by all people - starting from engineer to

manufacturing director. The other supporting software used in the

manufacturing (Product Data Management, Supply Chain

Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, Customer Relationship

Management, Product Life Cycle Management need to be integrated

to get the full benefits of Industry 4.0. We need commitment from

Top Management for implementing Industry 4.0 for manufacturing

since it may demand few investments and full support from the

working people and all their vendors, suppliers willing to transform

them to be a world class manufacturer like any other MNCs. It is

highly needed for India which is likely to grow faster than any

country across the Globe in coming years.

Dr V Balasubramanian delivered his lecture on the theme

“Application of IOT and AI in Welding Technology in Indian

Railways”. He started from fundamentals like what is Automation,

Machine learning, Machine vision, Robotics, Self-driving cars etc.

He explained the main attractions of the IoT and AI. He has

elaborated three key uses for the IoT and AI within the

manufacturing industry like in Manufacturing operations,

production asset management and maintenance, field service. He

also touch upon the subjects, like How Can the IoT and AI impact

Welding? The Benefits of Introducing the IoT and AI to a Welding

Workshop etc. The idea of Industry 4.0, which is closely tied to

IoT, "represents the vision of the interconnected factory where

equipment is online, and in some way is also intelligent and capable

of making its own decisions." He has gone into deep about the

theme by taking time to explain all things connected like, IoT and

Artificial Intelligence in current welding industry, How the IoT and

AI Could Impact the World of the Welder? What is Internet of

Welding, etc.

The IoT (Internet of Thing) essentially refers to the idea of

connecting anything that is powered to both the internet and each

other. This includes everything from mobile phones, kitchen

appliances and office equipment, right through to jet engines and

large-scale manufacturing equipment. Artificial intelligence (AI)

is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines,

especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the

acquisition of information and rules for using the information),

reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions)

and self-correction. Train maintenance is typically performed in

difficult working conditions and often under time pressure. It helps

to reduce human error in such high pressure and complex tasks.

Robotic welding increases the life of the tracks and crossing, making

the process not only time effective, but cost effective as well. The

repair process takes less than a day and there is no need to block

traffic. Best of all, robots can work day and night without needing

unions or rest. IoT and AI will undoubtedly introduce many benefits

in the welding of Rail Tracks and machine parts in less time and

with better precision and accuracy. It can help the Indian Railways

in becoming more efficient and productive. Many automated welding

machines are already connected to a computer and in fact networked

and could be accessed at any time from a computer anywhere in the

world. The first obvious application would be in diagnostics and

calibration of the equipment itself, as the equipment could be

interfaced with a network on a routine basis to perform those

functions. Future IoT application to the field Welder will in all

probability arise mainly as part of an artificial intelligence platform,

as it would be highly advantageous in performing control and

monitoring functions even while the equipment is not connected to

the internet. IoT functionality could be provided by the artificial

intelligence. The members has attentively listened to the in depth

presentation .

Er R Ramdoss, Chairman presented the memento to the guest

speakers Dr P S Kumar and Dr V Balasubramanian. Er P Gomathi

Nayagam, Honorary Secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
