PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Hello to the Rosebud Secondary College community. Since our last newsletter we have spent some time going over the information gathered from the whole school PD day. It was particularly interesting to look at the student and staff feedback regarding the vision, mission and values statements. There were quite similar results from both groups and we will be seeking parent input before finalising these for 2017. Alongside this work we have been developing our ‘Learning Model’. This work will guide more consistent practice in the classroom and learning in general. The model will make explicit what the role of the student, teacher and families are in learning. We plan to have a simple visual representation of this work completed this year for implementation in 2017. The Uniform Committee has been meeting regularly throughout this term with a group of students, parents and teachers. We have been reviewing particularly, items of clothing with the general feeling being that the uniform could be made to look somewhat ‘smarter’ with some minor adjustments. We are also looking at a warmer top to address concerns in the colder months. This is most likely to be a wind-breaker option to wear with the current jumper. We will be seeking some final feedback and confirming any changes over the next month. There will be a two year implementation phase regarding any changes for all current students. New Year 7 students will move to the new uniform from 2017. Recently the College hosted the ‘History Roadshow’ for our senior students and students from a number of local secondary schools. The hosting of the Roadshow enriches the learning experiences for our History students and expands their understanding of where their studies might take them in the future. I would like to thank the humanities staff who coordinated this annual activity. http://rsc.vic.edu.au/history-roadshow-at-rosebud-secondary-college/ On Tuesday 17th May, Rosebud Secondary College celebrated IDAHOT which stands for International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. Here at RSC we have a strong dedication to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students, and empower everyone to celebrate who they are. There were a range of activities throughout the day and we raised a ‘rainbow flag’ at the start of the day. The efforts of the students involved are to be commended, and I would like to thank our school nurse Benjamin Ratcliff for assisting the students in putting this great day together. http://rsc.vic.edu.au/happy-idahot-day/ Next week our ‘World Challenge’ students leave on their three week trip to Cambodia and Laos with Rhys Edmund and Brent Morrison. We wish them a rewarding and challenging trip. You can follow their travels on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/RSCWorldChallenge2016/ This week we held a sell-out community forum on Autism and Asperger's with Richard Eisenmajer. There will be another forum focusing on girls with ASD next semester. Organisational matters

COLLEGE NEWS WELLNESS PAVILION UPDATE:

We had a fantastic delivery on Monday 23rd May from our Wellness Pavilion ambassador, Sally Fitzgibbons. She has sent to us her signed surfboard, pictured here with College Captains Georgia, Tash, Toby and Hamish, with the message to all : "Live Your Passion". This is a mantra that Sally lives by and we expect the donation will further inspire others to "get on board" with their support for this project. Thank you Sally, and good luck for the next WSL tour event in Fiji. We are all behind you.

Remember, donations of time, money or materials can be made via: http://rsc.vic.edu.au/feature/wellness-pavilion/

You can keep in touch with the Wellness Pavilion via Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/Rosebud.Wellness.Pavilion/

Applications have been and continue to be prepared to multiple philanthropic foundations to reduce the material costs of the project. We will keep you posted as we hear further good news. Don’t hesitate to get in touch via the office if you are in a position to assist in some capacity. We are receiving good offers from local tradespeople, and as we approach build time there will be a definite call out to all plumbers, electricians, landscapers, chippies, the works. We will value any contribution.

HISTORY ROADSHOW AT ROSEBUD SECONDARY COLLEGE

On the 17th May, Rosebud Secondary College again hosted the History Council of Victoria’s History Roadshow. Our

students were joined by teachers and students from Dromana SC and Mornington SC to participate in a series of

lectures and workshops conducted by visiting academics from Melbourne Universities. Margaret Birtley from the

History Council of Victoria introduced the day by chairing a Q & A with the visiting academics as the panel. This

session was aimed at students in Years 9-12 and investigated Career Pathways for History graduates. Professor Joe

Siracusa (RMIT University) provided two lectures to Year 11 students about the impact of the Cold War on Australia

and the world. Anthony Bidgood (Monash University) worked with Year 12 Revolutions students to enhance their

studies of the Russian Civil War and War Communism. Geraldine Carrodus (Educational Consultant) worked with

Year 12 Australian History students and focussed on the way in which Federation/Nationhood and World War 1

affected the development of Australia as a nation.

Hosting the Roadshow really enriched the learning experiences of our History students and expanded their

understanding of where their studies might take them in the future.

COLLEGE NEWS

It’s an exciting time at Rosebud Secondary College with a number of projects already under way to beautify the

College grounds. The ‘Hands on Learning’ team are completing several projects such as the Pump Track,

Recreational Trail and Year 7 area, all to be officially opened in later 2016. They have also done a wonderful job on

the creation of the ‘Reflection Garden’, at the front of the school. Another project starting this year is the

landscaping for our Wellness Pavillion.

We are now looking for interested parents to come onto a ‘College Beautification committee’ to have a look at the

overall grounds and put a plan in place. If you are interested in coming onto this committee please contact Glenn

Powell on 5986 8595.

I would also like to point out that we are looking for a ‘Grounds Maintenance person’ (see advert in community

news at end of newsletter)

‘Let’s join together to make this College a better place for all’

LIBRARY NEWS

LIBRARY NEWS Over the past week our senior students have begun their mid-year exams. During each exam period, the

Library will support students’ revision efforts by providing a quiet space at recess and lunchtime, enabling

them to study and prepare for their next session in the Hall. We ask all students who come into the

Library at break times for the next three weeks to help create a calm, quiet atmosphere which allows all

Library users to make productive use of this time.

Exams can be stressful for students (and their families!) and reading is a great antidote for stress. In fact, a

2009 study by the University of Sussex found that reading reduces stress by 68 percent and is a more

effective stress-reliever than listening to music, having a cup of tea, taking a walk and playing video

games. Psychologists believe this is because the human mind has to concentrate on reading and the

distraction of being taken into a story eases the tensions in muscles and the heart. Participants in the

research only needed to read silently for six minutes to slow down the heart rate and ease tension in the

muscles. Cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis, who conducted the study, said ‘Losing yourself in a

book is the ultimate relaxation.’

Students who are feeling the pressure of exams are invited to visit the Library over the next few weeks to

choose from our ever-growing fiction collection. We are constantly adding new titles to our shelves and

Library staff are on-hand to help you choose your next favourite read. The Library also has a new ‘self-

help’ section which includes a range of books on how to relax, de-stress and achieve balance in life. This is

located in non-fiction.

LIBRARY SUPPORTS IDAHOT DAY

In support of the College’s recent celebration of IDAHOT Day, the Library

currently has a display of novels whose characters reflect a diversity of sexual

orientations. This display includes ‘How to Be Happy’ by David Burton, ‘The

Boy in the Dress’ by David Walliams and ‘Carry On’ by Rainbow Rowell. All

titles are available for students to borrow.

SPORT NEWS

TO ALL INTERESTED FAMILIES:

Very soon students and teachers from Gamagori Senior High School, our sister school in Japan, will once again be visiting Rosebud Secondary College. We are now looking for host families for 16 students, aged 15 to 17.

Is your family interested in being part of this amazing program?? All families are invited to apply.

The dates are Tuesday 26th July to Monday 1st August, 2016.

The homestay is always a valuable and worthwhile experience, for both the Japanese student, and Australian family. Lifelong friendships are formed, and it is a chance for both sides to experience a little of a different culture.

Being a host family requires no previous experience – just a willingness to open your home and share your life with a student from Japan. They will be

‘part of the family’ and experience whatever you normally do as a family. It is also a fantastic opportunity for the Australian students to practice their Japanese if they study the subject, but students who don’t study Japanese are also welcome to apply. It is a great way to gain some first-hand knowledge and experience of the Japanese culture, and gain skills in hosting people from different cultures and for whom English is not their first language.

Please contact Laura Sykes or one of the Japanese teachers at the school either via email [email protected] or on 5986 8595. Expressions of interest needed by June 14th.

YEAR 7 FOOTBALL On Tuesday the 31st of May the 18 man strong Year 7 Football team made its way to Emil Marsden Reserve in Mt. Eliza on a day that could only be described as perfect conditions for football. After training for weeks in advance in all types of conditions the boys were very keen to finally compete and represent the school. Being victims to a tough draw that meant back-to-back games as well as sustaining an injury, we had some very tired boys by the time of the final siren. Despite the ‘never give-up’ attitude all day, the boys fell short in both games finishing third overall. Everyone played their role on the day and should be proud of their performance with special mentions to Connor Bartlett, Kye Young and Daniel Mckenzie who starred. A huge thank you must go out to our Year Nine assistant coaches, Zac Maynard and Josh Taylor who are members of the AFL development class for their assistance with training and on the day. A fun day had by all with a desire already from the group to build and go one better next year. – Mr. O’Connor

YEAR 7 GIRLS NETBALL The Netball was contested in magnificent sunny conditions at the Mornington Courts. Two teams from Rosebud

contested the Peninsula Year 7 championships.

The A team started the day off strongly with good wins against Mt Eliza, Westernport and

Dromana and the round against Mornington proved to be the Grand Final in the round

robin tournament. The match was closely fought for the entire duration, but Mornington

proved to be the better team on the day. Ellie Papadopoulos was outstanding all day and

had no peer. Well played to all team members, Ally Maynard, Amy Fairweather, Laura

James, Bella Presti, Amy Croad, Asa Heiskari, Chelsea Forster and Bridgette Dahl.

The B team started the day off well with a confidence-building win against Dromana

but then were beaten by much bigger teams in Mt Eliza and Mornington. The girls

were valiant all day. All team members should be pleased with their efforts. Well

done to all girls Ella Hornsby, Jemma Ryan, Alia Purnomo, Arya Khanal, Greta

Gillespie-Dawson, Mikayla Arnold, Jade Stevenson and Poppy Hunter for a consistent

and fine performance in all games.

A huge thank you to Acacia Davis, Year 9, who coached the girls over many lunchtime and on the day. Thanks also

to Courtney Alexander who was scorer on the day.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

The Inter School Cross Country was a successful day for a large number of students with twenty seven students

winning their way through to the next level, the Southern Metro Region, Mornington won overall, but Rosebud

certainly represented themselves well finishing in Second place overall.

The 12 and 13 year old Girls Team all were successful in moving to the next level, Madison Clark (3rd), Laura James

(4th), Amy Fairweather and Ellie Papadopoulos all finished top ten.

Elisha Clarke was third in the 14 year old girls. Ashlee Deane was third in the 15 year old girls and Mikaylah

Wightman was third in the 16 year old girls.

Max Riley finished second in the 14 year old boys.

Other students to win through are Abbey Jordan, Freya Heiskari, Sarah Jarrett, Sam Schlipalius, Jarrod Williams,

Josh K Taylor, Kyle James, Riley McKenzie, Ethan Harlem, Harvey Hannemann, Kaylah Charles, Lachy McKenzie,

Hannah Berndt, Jye Alexander, Bailey Dunn, Jackie Hayman Hall, Ben Hyde, Blake Kuipers, River Stewart and Max

McCombe

The early morning training sessions built a good aerobic training base but also gave the runners a very good sense

of team.

All the best wishes to the students who will now proceed to the next level at Ballam Park on Thursday June 23rd

and congratulations to all students who ran at Hastings and made the day a successful one.

A big thank you to students who made the commitment and effort to train before school leading up to the event.

Thanks also to the staff who assisted; Brent Morrison, Liam O’Connor, Laura Cuttriss, Keetah Evans, Arthur Verwey,

James Marsland, Adam Vardanega and Parker Neale.

SPORT NEWS - $10 Charge

Please remember that each time your child goes out of the school for sport there is a

$10 charge, payable to the front office before the day. Failing to do this may result in

your child not going on the sporting activity.

YEAR 9 ALTERNATIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION On Friday May 20th students from 9A headed to Dromana Lawn Bowls Club as part of Yr. 9 PE's Alternative Sports Program. The class was greeted by two Lawn Bowls enthusiasts who also have a history of teaching at Rosebud Secondary College: Peter Gordon and Ian Dale. Under such expert coaching and guidance, 9A surely enough became confident lawn bowlers and enjoyed learning about the game. The bowling on the day wasn't without bias, as there was more than one slip up which saw some bowls headed the total opposite direction they were intended for. All in all it was a great day session and 9A student Ashlee Deane did a fantastic job thanking the Dromana Bowls Club expert coaches for the opportunity to experience lawn bowls. After the class thank you, Bowls Coach Peter Gordon explained how Dromana Bowls Club is interested in extending a Bowls 'Scholarship' to an interested and suitable RSC student. For more information on this scholarship contact the college office for Peter Gordon's details, or contact the Dromana Bowls Club. For parents of students in other Yr. 9 classes, each of the other Yr. 9 classes will get an opportunity to try Lawn Bowls at Dromana in the coming months. Until then, Happy Bowling, Mr Morrison

BADMINTON REPORT

On Tuesday 31st of May the boys and girls Badminton teams went out to Mornington and played Mount Eliza, Western Port,

Mornington and Dromana. An awesome effort was made by all the students that represented Rosebud which led the boys to a

whopping victory (being undefeated) and making it to the next division. Well done to Dallas Kuipers, Harry King, Daniel

Brennan, Jordyn Heap, Adam Bruechert, Flynn Price, Kynan

Mckenzie and Tom Powell. The boys ‘B’ team were also very

successful and had they been awarded points would have

come second! The girls also had a fantastic day where they

too were undefeated and are going through to the next

round. Well done to Ella Hillton, Ellie Patrick, Hope

De Graauw, Caeleigh Burnside, Shontae Young and Abbey

Hood. Congratulations to everyone and good luck for the

next round.

COMMUNITY NEWS

As beautiful as the Mornington Peninsula is, we are not immune from the state-wide problem of cars being broken into.

The impact of having your car broken into can sometimes be underestimated – but ask anyone that has recently has a phone or

wallet stolen and they will tell you the frustrating story around replacing cards, losing valuable contacts/phone numbers and the impact this has on both personal and business lives. Local police have made some great arrests of offenders in the past week, but we need your help to address this crime. Weekends seem to be a popular time for this crime, so we ask that you make a concerted effort to:

Lock your car - Remove all valuables – phone, GPS, wallet, IPad, laptops, etc.

Thieves are targeting cars in all types of locations – so regardless of where you are – it may be at the kid’s sporting events, off at the beach or shopping – lock the car up. And as important, when you get home, lock it up. Unless your car is in a locked garage; your driveway or out the front of your home still presents as a potential target for thieves.

If you see any suspicious behaviour – immediately call 000. If you know of any information that would help police solve a crime – call Crimes Stoppers 1800 333 000

On the Peninsula, we have increased our patrols to high risk area, and are targeting our known thieves through covert operations. We intend to do everything we can to address this crime.

Please help us to keep this amazing part of Victoria a safe place. As a community, we can make a difference.
