PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
On Wednesday afternoon we had our last session of Active Minds for the year. It was great
to see so many parents come along and see the learning activities their young people have
been involved in. I enjoyed meeting many of these parents. I would like to thank the staff
involved in organising and facilitating the program. On Monday we have parent teacher
interviews. I look forward to meeting parents over the afternoon, so please come up and
say hi. As part of my commitment to get to know the community I have a few questions
that I would love to ask you on Monday.
Living Library was a very popular activity at the college recently. Many of you may have seen the article in
the local paper about the sessions which included past students talking with our current students about
their learning and career pathways. The other important element of this program is encouraging our stu-
dents to see the library as a valuable resource to encourage exploration and reading. I am an avid reader of
various genres and encourage all members of our community to take time out from busy schedules to enjoy
reading. It's great for parents and guardians to model the importance of reading to young people through
novels, magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc. Sometimes knowing what to read can be the first challenge. I am
currently reading ‘All The Light We Cannot See’ which is set before and during the Second World War. I en-
courage people who enjoy historical literature to consider this novel.
Over the past fortnight we have celebrated diversity and inclusion through Wear it Purple and Harmony
Days. In a time where our media is full of potential conflict, it is important to remind our young people about
the College values of respect and belonging. Our student leaders have demonstrated commitment to these
values and have encouraged their peers to engage in promoting a positive community culture. It was partic-
ularly rewarding to see our future students from the local primary schools enjoying the activities and food
vans. I would like to congratulate the teams who make these days so successful.
Some of the other activities that have occurred recently include our chess team performing very strongly at
a local school tournament and success in various sports including table tennis, basketball, hockey, futsal, and
gymnastics. The VCAL class are continuing to work on the mural at Ti Tree Lodge and our VCE students are
preparing for holiday revision programs and exam preparation.
I have enjoyed visiting many classes recently, including Science, various Technologies, Maths, English, Senior
VCAL, Art, Physical Education, Psychology, and Legal Studies. I look forward to continuing to visit classes and
speak with students about their learning.

COLLEGE NEWS YEAR 9 CITY EXPERIENCE CAMP
In the past weeks, Year Nine students had the opportunity to attend the City Experience overnight camp. This camp runs as part of the Learning for Living program and students were required to complete a number of tasks before, during and at the end of the jam-packed, two-day experience.
Students caught public transport to the city and stayed in a hostel while on the camp. In small groups, the students spent up to four hours on their first day of camp following an itinerary of discovery of their own making. Groups visited places such as the Queen Victoria Market, the Melbourne Museum, walking tours of lane ways and arcades, parks and gardens, and much more. Staff accompanying the students were often on the phone, checking-in with the groups, making suggestions and encouraging the students’ independence, problem solving and teamwork skills.
In the evening, students travelled to Albert Park for an Italian dinner at Basilico and went across to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for an evening dip in the wave pool and waterslide. Wearily heading back to the hostel in the north of the CBD, students delighted in gelato on Southbank as the flames shot out of the towers in front of the casino.
Day two, after an early rise, had the students going all morning: ice skating, riding the Melbourne Star and a behind the scenes tour of Etihad Stadium - all before lunch! A brief train ride back to the hostel was followed by the longer journey back to Rosebud by train and coach.

MABO ART WORK
Mornington Peninsula Shire together with Bulak Arts worked with 21 of our students from different ethnicities to create an art canvas celebrating reconciliation.
The theme of the canvas was Mabo as it has been 25 years since the high court of Australia recognized Native title within Australia.
The art work will be displayed in the shire offices, along side similar pieces from the
local elders. Our school decided to contribute to this project during our harmony week as it signifies the elimination of racial discrimination.

Wear it Purple Day encourages all people to explore diversi-ty, promote respect for one another and a sense of belonging.
LIBRARY NEWS
PAST STUDENTS INTRIGUE AND INSPIRE
BOOK WEEK 2017
Former students of Rosebud Secondary College were the main feature of Book Week 2017. Book Week celebra-
tions were launched with the first session of Living Library on Tuesday 22nd August. During this session, former stu-
dents came along as living ‘books’. Small groups of students were then able to ‘borrow’ each book for a short peri-
od, to talk to them and hear their remarkable stories.
On Wednesday a group of forty students from all Year
levels were treated to a special presentation and
writing workshop from a very talented former stu-
dent and current English/Literature teacher, Mr Bren-
dan Murray. Mr Murray, a published author, has
received a number of National Literary Awards and
nominations. With the release of his second novel,
‘Venom’ this month there was a great deal of interest
and excitement from the lucky students who were
able to take part in his workshop. Many students
commented on how engaging the presentation was and how it had ‘inspired’ them to write their own stories.
Thursday wrapped up the Living Library sessions with the second group of former students. The two sessions fea-
tured Alex Dellaportas (Director of Spark Youth Dance Co), Michael Marmina (Owner of Training studio), Dr Beth
Forbes (Research Scientist), Matt Bennetti (Marketing, Social/Humanitarian work), Georgia Walker (AWFL Colling-
wood player), Mahidiya Monis (Community work with refugees and SBS radio broadcaster), Mitch Skvor (MKR
2016 contestant and paramedic student) and Laura Skvor (MKR 2016 contestant and Commis – Junior Chef). The
students who took part in the sessions commented on how interesting it was to hear about the journeys of the
speakers and the wide range of opportunities and experiences that could be achieved beyond school.
Finally, students were treated to lots and fun and entertainment in a very exciting and competitive Book Trivia Quiz
in the Library on Friday. A number of teams left with big smiles and prizes that included books and movie passes.
Brendan Murray Joint winner of the 2017 Ned Kelly Award in
the Best True Crime section for his first novel, ‘The Drowned Man’!!!
Former Rosebud Secondary College Student and current English/Literature teacher took
part in Book Week as our special guest author.

REPORT NEWS NOTIFICATION OF CHANGES TO
ATTITUDES TO LEARNING REPORTS
It is anticipated our students and their families will be looking at their Interim Reports around the time this is published. What you may notice are some changes to the ATL skills. ‘Shows respect’ now reads ‘Shows respect for learning’. ‘Shows positive attitude’ had been changed to ‘Demonstrates resilience’ and ‘Motivated to achieve his/her best’ has been altered to read ‘Motivated to achieve personal best’. With the exception of this last one, we have updated the ‘Common Clarifications’ sheet at the back of the report to reflect these changes and make it clear what we understand these skills to mean.
There are a number of reasons for these adjustments and all have been made in consultation with our teaching staff. We decided to change to ‘Shows respect for learning’ because we want to be explicit to our students that when we talk about respect we are talking about a collective set of behaviours that are about much more than just manners. To us, it’s disrespectful for students to choose not to apply them-selves to their learning, just as it is disrespectful when they disrupt the learning of others, the teacher’s ability to teach or damage equipment or materials in the learning environment on purpose. We believe changing the name of this ATL skill highlights these expectations more clearly for our students and you, their families.
Likewise, we believe resilience shouldn’t be a foreign concept to our students anymore. They have all been exposed to Hugh van Cuylenberg’s work through the Resilience Project presentations and the con-cept of resilience is also built into our Purpose and Values statements. Highlighting its importance as a learning skill through assessing the ATL skill ‘Demonstrates resilience’ gives us the opportunity to help our students understand what resilience involves so they can develop into more resilient learners and young people.
Finally, we adjusted ‘Motivated to achieve his/her best’ to ‘Motivated to achieve personal best’ to more accurately capture our College Value of ‘Personal Best’ and reflect our reporting philosophy around indi-vidual learning progress.
On behalf of the teaching staff, we look forward to discussing your child/ren’s learning progress with you at the Student Parent Teacher Conferences next Monday, and we hope you take the opportunity to use this Attitudes to Learning Report as a conversation starter with your child/ren about their learning.

SPORT NEWS SOUTHERN PENINSULA INTERSCHOOL SPORT
This Term has been a cracker for Interschool Sport with some super team and individual results. The Year 7 sport day was a hoot with about 50 students giving their all in Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis and Futsal. We flexed our muscle in Basketball and Table Tennis winning the pennants. Hockey has proven to be one of our strengths in the other year levels with a number of wins. All winning teams from this term will compete in the Southern Metropolitan finals in Term 4.
SOUTHERN METROPOLITAN
REGION SPORT
A number of winning teams from last Term have competed at the next Southern Metropolitan Zone level. For many students this is an eye opening experience coming up against some talented opposi-tion. Unfortunately we had no teams progress on to State Level but all students should be congratulated for their time and efforts.
SPORT NEWS ATHLETICS SQUAD
The athletics squad have been braving the cold with training now in full swing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00am. The competition is on the 14th of September at Ballam Park and again we are looking to take a strong squad from all year levels to show the neighbouring schools our talent. The next Newsletter edition will be full of photos and results from the day. We wish them all the best.
INTERSCHOOL GYMNASTICS For the first time in a while the College has a Gymnastics team. The small but skilled team competed in the Secondary Interschool Gymnastics Competition in Box Hill versing all types of schools from around the state. The long day began at 6:30am to ensure our B1 division girls arrived on the Floor, Beam, Vault & Bars in time. Fortunately we did arrive on time as the team consisting of Sophie Gains (Y12), Cassie Reed (Y10), Jay Vosjan (Y10) and Lily Wilson (Y7) won their division. The school had two other teams that competed in the lower divisions with all girls putting in their all in a very demand-ing and courage building sport. Sophie Gains of Y12 did an excellent job at competing as well as coaching and mentoring our younger girls and should be proud of her efforts.
