Superintendent’s Message by Katrina Norris, LCSW, LAC

What makes a company great? What drives innovative research or pioneering engineering? The answer I believe is curiosity. Curiosity is a quality related to inquisitive thinking such as exploring, investigating, and learning. It comes from the process of learning and a desire to acquire a knowledge and/or skill. I bring this to light as in the past nine months, I have been very curious. I have posed a lot of questions and learned so much from each of you. I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to the upcoming New Year. The vision for RSH remains the same as it is more valid now than ever.

To be a Center of Excellence that meets the evolving public health and patient care needs through: • Community Partnerships • Innovation • Technology • Evidence Based Practice

Rather than changing the Mission, Vision, and Values the most important characteristic of building a great team is to get the right people on the bus, wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats. The right people are the most important asset of RSH! I ask you to have faith and know that we can and will prevail in the end regardless of our current difficulties. We will continue to build a Culture of Discipline. What that means is a culture of disciplined people, you don’t need a hierarchy system when your right people have their own discipline and desire to do well for themselves and the patients.

A lot has changed and will continue to evolve in the New Year. I hope to see you all at the Town Hall meeting scheduled December 17 at 3:30 p.m. This will be a working meeting and I need as many staff members as possible to come and share your expertise as we devise our priorities for RSH in 2020.

Gratitude

The experience of Thanksgiving is shaped by history, collective and personal. In its purest sense we can use the holiday

season as an opportunity to experience what we are grateful for. By focusing on what we have changes what we pay

attention to, how we interpret the world, and can influence how we treat others.

Negative thinking and a lack of gratitude can literally have mind altering effects.

An attitude of gratitude provides a mindset that can positively affect our relationships with patients and co-workers

alike. We are an approachable role-model that can be counted upon. Our responses to challenging situations begin with a

positive frame of mind; enhancing effective outcomes. Take this opportunity to find what you truly are grateful for as there

are many benefits for sharing an attitude of gratitude.

Veterans’ Christmas Gift Wrap November 2, 2019

Various members of the American Legion Auxiliary traveled across the state of Indiana to participate in Richmond State Hospital’s Veterans’ Christmas Gift Wrap on November 2. This program allows our veteran patients to send gifts to their family members and/or friends, all purchased by the American Legion Auxiliary.

During this holiday season, we reflect on how truly thankful we are to have such a great partnership with the American Legion Auxiliary.

Patient Thanksgiving Luncheon November 21, 2019

On Thursday, November 21, the Rehab Department put on a Thanksgiving meal for the patients and staff who were here that day. The committee, which consisted of 9

Rehab staff began planning for the dinner in late September. Aramark provided some of the menu items, such as sweet potatoes and corn. Hospital staff volunteered to bake

turkeys and donate desserts for the meal. In all, 18 turkeys were baked! The committee spent time on Wednesday peeling, cooking, and mashing 100 pounds of potatoes, baking turkeys, and various other tasks. On Thursday, the committee and

other Rehab staff finished preparations for the day and made sure servers were well-stocked.

We had a lot of leftovers and were able to share the meal with the B shift staff that evening and took the rest to Hope House…they were so appreciative!

The Executive Team served the meal and the housekeeping staff helped clean up. Everyone did

a great job! Thank you to all who made this wonderful event possible—those who baked

turkeys, brought in desserts, helped set-up/tear-down, clean-up and those who helped serve.

Teamwork makes the dream work!
