Who Started Google? Google is the most widely used search engine in the United States. A
search engine is used to find information on the Internet. But this fact might surprise you. Google was started by a Russian immigrant named Sergey Brin.
Sergey was born in 1973 in Moscow. His parents both worked in low-level jobs. At that time, Russia was part of the Soviet Union. The Brins faced discrimination as Jews. They could not have the careers they wanted. They didn’t want their son to face the same problems.
The Brins left the Soviet Union. They traveled to America. Sergey was just six years old.
The Brins settled in Maryland. Sergey knew little English. He spoke with a heavy accent. He was shy in school. But he always worked hard.
Sergey learned English. He became an American teenager. And he was very smart. Sergey finished high school in only three years. In three more years, he finished college. He moved to Stanford in California for graduate school. There, he studied computer science. He also met Larry Page. In 1996, the two friends co-founded Google. By 2010, the company was worth $11 billion. Google was used by 72 percent of the people searching the Internet.
Sergey remembers being an immigrant child. He never felt like part of the group. But he turned this into something positive. It made him more independent. It helped him pursue bold, new ideas.

Nigerians in America Abiodun Ogunsanya (oh guh sa na) comes from Nigeria. He lives in
Maryland. He runs a barbershop by day. He works as a guard by night.
“You see some Nigerians have been here for 30 years. They can’t go home. Why?” he asks. “Because the government is not good.”
Nigeria is in West Africa. It became independent in 1960. Since then, the government has changed many times. The army has often taken power for itself.
Nigeria is one of the world’s top ten oil producers. Yet, people live in poverty. Roads and schools are crumbling. Often, there is no electricity. So people like Ogunsanya come to America. Since 2000, African immigration to America has grown. Nigerians are the largest group.
In the barbershop, Nigerians gather to talk. Gbenga Ajayi left home five years ago. “I don’t know why we cannot have electricity in that country,” he says. “The first thing Nigeria needs is light. Everything else will follow.”
Nigeria’s president has a tough job. He wants to help the people of his country. In 2010, he planned to hold free elections. He promised more jobs. He also wanted everyone to share the oil profits.
Ogunsanya closes his barbershop. He has some hope for Nigeria’s future. But he knows the president cannot fix everything. He hopes one day to return home. He does not know if he will.
