Hero smiled. But when he reached for her hand, Hero turned and rantoward the temple.

Leander hurried after her. “I must go home now,” he whispered. “Buttonight, I will swim across the sea to you. It will be dark. No one will see us.”

Hero nodded in agreement. Leander’s heart filled with joy.

That night, Hero climbed a tower by the ocean. She lit a lantern to guideLeander’s way. Soon Leander reached the shore of Sestos and found Herowaiting. The two talked all night. Before dawn, Leander swam back to Abydos.

Every night after that, Hero lit a lantern in the tower, and Leander swam tomeet her. But one night, a strong wind blew out the lantern. Leander got lost inthe dark, rough waters. Exhausted, he slipped beneath the waves and drowned.

With growing worry, Hero watched for Leander all night long. But he never appeared. At dawn, she searched the beach but found no sign of him.Heartbroken with grief, Hero went back to Aphrodite’s temple. From that day on,she never left the temple again.

Read this short story. Then answer questions 6–10.

The Right MomentI was so nervous. I knew what I had to say, but I didn’t know how to say it.

Then Mr. Park interrupted before I could start.

“More kimchi, Michael?” He spooned some more of the deliciousvegetable mixture on to my plate. He seemed amused by my nervousness.

I had been worried about this evening ever since I had asked Ji-hoon tomarry me.

Ji-hoon was a teacher, and we met when I was one of a group of Americansoldiers who visited her school to talk to the children about life in the U.S. Westarted dating, and pretty soon I knew she was the perfect woman for me. When Iasked her to marry me, Ji-hoon said yes.

Falling in love was the easy part. This evening was the hard part. I hadgotten to know Ji-hoon’s parents over the last year, and we became friends. Butthis evening, I was not only asking their permission to marry their daughter—Iwas also asking to take her back to America, 7,000 miles away from her home.

Ji-hoon told me that it would be best to bring the subject up during dinner. It’s traditional in Korea to treat guests with great hospitality. There could be nobad feelings at the dinner table.

“Now that the war is over—” I began. I’d arrived in South Korea inNovember, 1951—the second year of the war. Fighting between North and SouthKorea had ended on July 27, 1953. It was now October. By Christmas I’d beback home in New York City and out of the military.

“More tuna, Michael?” said Mr. Park.

Every time I tried to bring up the question of marriage, he put more food onmy plate. I could not find a moment to ask the question, and time was runningout. Mr. Park put more tuna on my plate, and then he smiled at Ji-hoon.

“Your future husband has a very good appetite,” he said and winked at me.
