RSOC119MediaandReligion(52421)Sectiontheme:MormonFundamentalistsandtheMediaMWF1:00-2:05Classroom:OCONR201Instructor:Dr.MichelleMuellerEmail:[email protected]:2:10-3:10PMinKenna300-DCataloguecoursedescription:Examinationofthereligious,theologicalandethicalissuesandperspectivesraisedbyvariousmedia:print,visual,audio,multimedia,andvirtual.Specialattentionwillbegiventothenatureoftheirrelationshipandthereligiousandspiritualissuescurrentlypresentintheirinterface.Sectiondescription:InthissectionofRSOC119MediaandReligion,weexaminetheimpactofmediaonthereligiousminoritythroughtheexampleofMormonfundamentalistsintheUnitedStates.ThemainstreamMormon(LDS)Churchtaughtpolygamousmarriageuntil,underpressurefromthefederalgovernment,theChurchdisavowedthepracticein1890.FundamentalistsnotassociatedwithLDShavecontinuedthepracticesincethelatenineteenthcentury.AlthoughtheLDSChurchhastaughtmonogamousmarriagesincetheturnofthenineteenthcenturyandhasgrowntobecomeaworldwidechurchofoverfifteenmillionmembers,thepopularimageofMormonscontinuestobeinfluencedbyitspolygamouspastandthemarginalfundamentalists.Furthermore,Mormonfundamentalists,apopulationoffortytofiftythousandinNorthAmerica,areofdiversegroupsthemselves(e.g.,FundamentalistChurchofJesusChristofLatter-daySaints(FLDS),ApostolicUnitedBrethren(AUB,a.k.a.AllredGroup),CentennialPark,andindependents).DespitethediversityofMormonfundamentalistsintheUS,thepopularimageofMormonpolygamistsisinformedalmostexclusivelybynewsmediaaboutFLDS,asectwhosedresscustomsandgenderrolesarefarmorespecificthaninothergroups.Yet,twoseriesinpopulartelevisionhavecompletelytransformedtheimageofMormonpolygamists.TheyareHBO’sBigLove(fictionaldrama)andTLC’sSisterWives(realitytelevision).Theseseries,incontrastwithmediarepresentingonlynegativeaspectsofpolygamouscommunities,portraybalancedimagesofconsensuallypolygamouswomeninmeaningfulrelationshipswithsister-wivesandwhoareresponsible,well-roundedparents.Othermedia,Lifetime’srealitytelevisionseries,EscapingPolygamy,andShowtime’sdocumentaryProphet’sPrey,continuetoemphasizecrimes,controlofwomen,andabuseofchildren.Whileshowingonlyselectfundamentalistgroups,EscapingPolygamyandProphet’sPreyclaimthesepatternsareuniversalinpolygamousgroups.Thisseminarisconcernedwiththerolemediaplaysinreinforcinganduntanglingstereotypesaboutthereligiousminority.Whileourreadingsandlessonplansfocusonthisspecificexample,studentswillstrengthentheirabilitiestospeakabouttheinterplaybetweenmediaandlivedreligion.

OurmeetingscheduleconsistsofMediaMondays,WorkingWednesdays,andFocusFridays.OnMediaMondays,weviewtelevisionepisodesandfilmclipsthatrepresentMormonfundamentalismandrecordobservationsinaMediaLog.OnWorkingWednesdays,weapplycriticalthinkingindiscussionsaboutthemediawerecentlywatchedinconversationwithacademicallyrigorousessaysaboutMormonhistoryandMormonfundamentalistcommunities.OnFocusFridays,wehoneinonspecificquestionsandissuesregardingtheimpactofthemediaindustryonlivedreligion.ReadingResponses(a.k.a.“InterfaceIssues”)aredueonFocusFridayspriortoourclassmeeting.Prerequisite:Intermediatelevelcourse(SCTR20-99,TESP20-99,orRSOC20-99)oranothercourseapprovedasfulfillingtheintermediatelevelCorerequirementinReligiousStudiesandcompletionof88quarterunits.DigitalAgePathway:ThiscourseisassociatedwiththeDigitalAgePathway.IfyoudeclarethisPathway,youmayusearepresentativepieceofworkfromthiscourseasoneofthePathwaymaterialsyouwilluploadviaeCampusduringyourjuniororsenioryear.Therefore,werecommendthatyoukeepelectroniccopiesofyourworkusingDropboxorGoogleDocs,inadditiontosavingcopiesonyourowncomputerorflashdrives.ThismayensureyouwillhavearangeofchoicesforretrievingyoursavedfileswhenyouanalyzeandassembleyourPathwaymaterialsinpreparationtowritethePathwayreflectionessay.AboutReligion,TheologyandCulture(RTC)3:Buildingonthefirsttwocourses,thethirdcourseinRTCappliesinsightsfromthestudyofreligiontodifficult,open-endedquestionsofvitalinteresttocontemporarysocieties.Fromhistoricalorcurrentperspectives,thiscoursetakescriticalengagementtoacreativeleveleitherintheoryorpractice.LearningGoalsforReligion,TheologyandCulture3CriticalThinking:Theabilitytoidentify,reflectupon,evaluate,integrate,andapplydifferenttypesofinformationandknowledgetoformindependentjudgments.EthicalReasoning:Drawingonethicaltraditionstoassesstheconsequencesofindividualandinstitutionaldecisions.ReligiousReflection:Questioningandclarifyingbeliefsthroughcriticalinquiryintofaithandthereligiousdimensionsofhumanexistence.Perspective:Seekingouttheexperienceofdifferentculturesandpeople,strivingtoviewtheworldthroughtheireyes.LearningObjectivesforReligion,TheologyandCulture33.1Identifydiverseperspectivesonandevaluateethicalimplicationsofpastorpresentissuesofenduringrelevance.(CriticalThinking;EthicalReasoning;Perspective)3.2Evaluateandapplyinsightsfromthestudyofreligiontoopen-endedissuesfacingsocieties,pastorpresent.

Textbook:Thetextbookforthissectionisaspeciallypreparedreader.ThecoursereaderisavailableattheSCUCampusBookstoreonly.Yourreaderispreparedinaccordancewithpublishingstandards,whichmeansthatthecostofthereaderincludesthecostofroyaltiestothevariouspressesresponsiblefortheindividualpublications.Inordertokeepyourcostsdown,IhaveleftoutfromthereaderrequiredreadingsthatareavailableinelectronicformatthroughtheSCULibrary.Thesereadingsaremarkedinthefollowingreadingschedule.Assignments:Generalparticipation(10points)Asanadvanced(RTC3)levelreligiousstudiescourse,“MediaandReligion”isdesignedtoexamine,studyandintegrateissuesandproblemsattheinterfaceofseveraldifferentareasofcultureastheyimpactandinformthestudyofreligionandtheology.Withnoformaltests,thiscoursereliesheavilyonon-timeattendanceandparticipation,readinganddiscussionofvariousculturalandreligioustexts,aswellaswritingandcreativelyconsideringthevariousaspectsoftheinterplaybetweenreligion,spirituality,popcultureandmedia.AnyadditionalassignmentsnotlistedbelowwillcountunderParticipation.Attendance(13points)–Therefore,allstudentsareexpectedtobepresent,ontime,preparedandactiveparticipantsatclassforpresentationsanddiscussionswhichconstitutethecoreofthiscourse.Thatbeingsaid,yourinstructorunderstandsthatillnessesandemergenciesoccurandprefersthatstudentsnotattendclasswhentheyarelikelycontagious.Inaccordance,everystudentispermittedtwoabsenceswithoutpenalty.Wehave28classmeetings.Eachclassisworthonehalf-pointtowardsatotalof13gradepoints.Eachabsencebeyondthefirsttwowillresultinadropofonehalf-point.Idonotdistinguishbetween“excused”and“unexcused”absences.Anabsenceisanabsence.Latenessorearlydeparturefromclassresultsinpartialcreditfortheday.MediaNoteLog(9points)–OnMediaMondays,weobservefilmsandtelevisionepisodesthatwewillcontinuetoanalyzethroughouttheweek.Aspartofparticipation,everystudentshouldkeepa“MediaNoteLog”(a.k.a.mediajournal)andtakenotesofherorhisobservationseachMonday.Atthetopofeachentry,clearlystatethedateandthepieceofmediayouareobserving.Youarewelcometorecordmanytypesofobservations.Describetheeventsrepresentedinthemedia;charactersportrayed;interventionsfromdirectorsandcameratechnicians;etc.Youmaywishtojotdowndirectphrasesordialoguefromthemedia,andevenyourpersonalreflectionsandconclusionsaboutthestorylineorthemedia.Thepointistorecordyourobservationssothatyouhavethesetoreferbacktoinlaterdiscussions.Attheendofthequarter,submitscansonCaminoofthreeofyourstrongest(mostdetailed)entriesforreview.Studentsshouldnotedittheirentriesbeforesubmitting;youaresimplyselectingasampletodemonstratethatyouhaveindeedparticipatedappropriately.Ifthepageyouarescanningshowsmorethanoneentry,placeanasterisk(*)atthedateoftheentryyouaresubmittingfor
