Description and operating instructionsIndustrial ETHERNET Rail Switch

The Rail Switches RS2-5TX and RS2-5TX/FXhave been especially designed for use inindustrial environments. They supportETHERNET 10 MBit/s and Fast ETHERNET100 MBit/s.

The Rail Switch modules support switchedETHERNET networks in accordance withIEEE standard 802.3 using copper and fiberoptic technology. The switch modules areplugged onto the standard DIN rail. Becauseof their compact design the modules can bemounted in a terminal box.

The RS2-5TX modules have five10/100 MBit/s twisted pair ports(10/100BASE-TX, RJ45 connectors). It is possible to connect up to five DTEs(data terminal equipment) or other TP/TXnetwork segments to these ports using twisted pair cabling.

The RS2-5TX/FX modules have four 10/100 MBit/s twisted pair ports(10/100BASE-TX, RJ45 connectors) and one100 MBit/s fiber optic port (100BASE-FX,MTRJ connector). It is possible to connect up to four DTEs orother TP/TX network segments to the TP/TXports using twisted pair cabling. One furtherDTE or an optical network component canbe connected to the fiber port.

The TP ports support auto negotiation andautopolarity. The operating mode of the FX port is fullduplex.

1. Functional description

The 10/100BASE-T(X) ports of an RS2-5TX(/FX) represent a terminal connectionfor the connected LAN segment. You canconnect single devices or complete networksegments.

1.1 FRAME SWITCHING FUNCTIONSStore and ForwardAll data received by the RS2-5TX(/FX) fromthe system bus or at the ports is stored andchecked for validity. Invalid and defectiveframes (> 1,518 bytes or > 1,522 bytes VLANframes or CRC error) as well as fragments(< 64 bytes) are discarded. The RS2-5TX(/FX) forwards the valid frames.

Multi address capabilityAn RS2-5TX(/FX) learns all source addres-ses per port. Only packets with– unknown addresses– addresses learnt at this port– a multi/broadcast addressin the destination address field are sent tothis port.An RS2-5TX(/FX) learns up to 1,000 addres-ses. This becomes necessary if more thanone terminal device is connected to one ormore ports. In this way several independentsubnetworks can be connected to an RS2-5TX(/FX).

Learnt addressesAn RS2-5TX(/FX) monitors the age of thelearned addresses. The RS2-5TX(/FX) dele-tes address entries from the address tablewhich exceed a certain age (300 seconds).Note: Restarting deletes the learnedaddress entries.

Tagging (IEEE 802.1Q)The IEEE 802.1 Q standard designates theVLAN tag to be included in a MAC dataframe for the VLAN and prioritizing func-tions. The VLAN tag consists of 4 bytes (2bytes tag protocol identifier TPID, 2 bytestag control information TCI). It is insertedbetween the source address field and thetype field. Data packets with a VLAN tag aretransmitted unchanged by the RS2-5TX(/FX).

1.2 SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OF THE TP/TX INTERFACELink controlThe RS2-5TX(/FX) monitors the connectedTP/TX line segments for short-circuits orinterrupts using regular Idle signals inaccordance with IEEE standard 802.310/100BASE-T/TX. The RS2-5TX(/FX) doesnot transmit any data to a TP/TX segmentfrom which it does not receive an Idle sig-nal.

Note: A non-occupied interface is assessedas a line interrupt. The TP/TX line to termi-nal equipment which is switched off is like-wise assessed as a line interrupt as the de-energised bus coupler cannot transmit Idlesignals.

Auto polarity exchangeIf the receive line pair is incorrectly connec-ted (RD+ and RD- switched) polarity is auto-matically reversed.

AutocrossingThe RS2-5TX(/FX) detects the transmit andreceive pairs (MDI, MDI-X). The RS2-5TX(/FX) automatically configures its portfor the correct transmit and receive pins.

Consequently it does not matter whetheryou connect devices using a cross-over orstraight cable.

1.3 SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OF THEF/O INTERFACELink control (RS2-5TX/FX)The RS2-5TX/FX monitors the connectedF/O line for interrupts using idle signalsduring frame pauses in accordance withIEEE standard 802.3 100BASE-FX. The RS2-5TX/FX transmits no data to an F/O linefrom which it is receiving no idle signal.Low Light Detection: If the optical inputpower decreases below the low light thres-hold the transmit and receive path will bedisabled for data and the idle signal will betransmitted.

1.4 FURTHER FUNCTIONS AND FEATURESResetThe RS2-5TX(/FX) will be reset by the follo-wing action:– input voltages fall below a threshold

After a reset the following action is carriedout:– initialization

1.5 DISPLAY ELEMENTSEquipment statusThese LEDs provide information about sta-tuses which affect the function of the entireRS2-5TX(/FX).P1 – Power 1 (green LED)– lit: – supply voltage 1 present– not lit: – supply voltage 1 less than 9.6 V

P2 – Power 2 (green LED)– lit: – supply voltage 2 present– not lit: – supply voltage 2 less than 9.6 V

Port StatusThese LEDs display port-related informati-on.DA/STAT 1 to 5 – Data, Link status (green LED)– not lit: – no valid link– flashes: – data activity– lit: – valid link

1.6 INTERFACES10/100 MBit/s connection (TP port)Five (RS2-5TX/FX: four) 10/100 Mbit ports(8-pin R45 sockets) allow DTEs or indepen-dent network segments complying with thestandards IEEE 802.3 100BASE-TX /10BASE-T to be connected. These portssupport autonegotiation and the autopolari-ty function.

The socket casings are electrically connec-ted to the front panel of the RS2-5TX(/FX).

– Pin configuration of the RJ45 socket:– 1 line pair: pin 3 and pin 6– 1 line pair: pin 1 and pin 2– remaining pins: not used.

100 Mbit/s connection (FX port)The 100 MBit/s port of the RS2-5TX/FX supports the IEEE 802.3 100BASE-FX FDXstandard (full duplex). It uses an MTRJconnector. The 100 MBit/s port allows onefurther DTE or an optical network component to be connected.

5pin terminal blockThe supply voltage and the indicatorcontact are connected via a 5pin terminalblock with screw locking. If the terminalblock is fitted the wrong way round, thedevice will still work correctly.

zWarning! The RS2-5TX(/FX) equipment isdesigned for operation with a safetyextra-low voltage. Thus, they mayonly be connected to the supply voltage connections with SELV cir-cuits with the voltage restrictions inaccordance with IEC/EN 60950-1.

– Voltage supply: Redundant voltage sup-plies are supported. Both inputs aredecoupled. There is no load distribution. With redundant supply, the power packsupplies the RS2-5TX(/FX) only with thehigher output voltage. The supply voltageis electrically isolated from the housing.

Fig. 3: Pin configuration of 5 pin terminalblock

Ground connectionThe RS2-5TX(/FX) is grounded via a separa-te screw connection.

2. Configuration

2.1 CONNECTING DTE AND OTHERNETWORK SEGMENTSIt is possible to connect up to five DTEs orother network segments to the 10/100Mbit/s ports of the RS2-5TX using twistedpair cabling It is possible to connect up to four DTEs orother TP/TX network segments to the10/100 Mbit/s ports of the RS2-TX/FX usingtwisted pair cabling.
