The UK Free-From market in 2015 was £365m, with a forecast of 50% growth by 2019. Free-From foods are no longer a niche market with a minority following, approximately 39% of UK consumers avoid at least one food/ingredient. The opportunities for food manufacturers are huge; however, the issue of managing Free-From manufacture continues to present a big challenge.

In order to protect consumers whether they have an intolerance or allergy to a particular ingredient or those who avoid as a lifestyle choice, accurate and consistent food labelling must be provided. A number of considerations need to be taken in making a ‘Free-From’ claim.

On the 18 March, we will be hosting a briefing session which will explore the new “Guidance on ‘Free-From’ Allergen Claims” produced by the BRC and FDF.
