WHAT IS A RÉSUMÉ?

A short document that states relevant

information regarding your education, skills,

experiences, accomplishments, and job

related interests.

It is used to market yourself to employers,

telling what skills you can bring to a

particular company or organization so you

will be considered for a job.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION?


• Make your name stand out (font size

20-30)

• Use a local and reliable address

• If using your cell phone number

• make sure you have a professional

voice message greeting

• Use an appropriate email address

• Use font size 10-12 for the rest of

your résumé

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR EDUCATION?

• List the complete name of the high school you are attending

– you may include any other high schools you have attended previously as well

• Include the year you will graduate

• Only include your GPA if it is above a 3.0

• Include any coursework that will help you stand out and relates to

the job you are applying for



WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE?


• List paid work experience in chronological order (most recent on top)

• Keep the date format consistent – either 2010-2013 or January 2010-April 2013)

• List your job title below the business name in italics

• Include 2-4 bullet points for each job listing


WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE?

• Use action verbs to describe key tasks of what you did that relate to the job you are applying for

• Use past tense verbs for past jobs and present tense verbs for current positions

• Be specific with your examples and make sure they relate to the job you are applying to

• Focus on accomplishments from previous jobs rather than simply tasks

you have in different areas

• Volunteer Experience can take the place of Work Experience if you have

not had any paid jobs

• List Volunteer Experience just like you would Work Experience with

consistent dates and bullet points describing what you did.




WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS?

• List any academic, sport, extra curricular or interest based achievements

that will not only showcase your work ethic but also your personality

• These can be both in school and out

• This is a great section to think about how you can stand out from the rest

• Think about achievements that relate to the job or show general positive

qualities (team player, leader, collaborative, reliable, creative etc.)

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN YOUR INTERESTS / SKILLS?

• List interests and skills that relate to the job you are applying for and

help you stand out

• This is a chance to tell about your passions and the unique qualities

you can bring to the position

• List any relevant computer skills or programs that you are proficient in

• If you are bilingual highlight that here

RÉSUMÉ FORMATTING • Keep work experience in chronological order (most recent first)

• Try to fit in on one page – no more than two pages

• Use a clear font such as Times New Roman in size 10-12 with your

name in 20-30

• Use bold type or italics to highlight important information

• Have 1 inch margins on all sides

• Your résumé should be NEAT, PROFESSIONAL and EASY TO READ

– you only have about 20 seconds to make a good impression

• Absolutely NO spelling or grammar errors! Proofread yourself and

have others read it as well

RÉSUMÉ WRITING GUIDELINES

• You must tell the truth – you will need to backup whatever you say

on your résumé

• Do not use personal pronouns (I or me)

• Research the company (visit the website) to understand their core

values

• Read the job description carefully so you can highlight your skills

that relate to what they are looking for

• Include keywords in your résumé pulled from the job description

• Focus on your strengths
