Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

When El Greco arrived in Venice from Crete, he discovered Western European art; when

he moved on to Rome, he learned what the great Renaissance masters had achieved; and finally in

Toledo, he found the atmosphere and the patrons who enabled his genius to flourish.

Traveling with you on this unique program is Olivier Bernier, whose previous lecture series

on Spanish art and architecture were warmly received by Met audiences. Of special interest to Mr. Bernier

this year is the quadricentennial celebration of El Greco’s work with special exhibits in Toledo.

We begin our trip in Venice, where Doménikos Theotokópoulos (El Greco, The Greek)

became friends with Tintoretto and other Venetian masters. The influence went both ways. Then,

after some months, he moved on to Rome, the capital, not just of the Catholic Church—but also of

great Renaissance art. There he was the guest of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the greatest collector

of his time and the grandson of Pope Paul III. After staying at the Farnese palace, which by special

permission we hope to visit, El Greco made his way still further west, to Toledo, where he spent the rest

of his life. Like the Prado, the Toledo museums are honoring this great man with several exhibitions.

This trip is distinctive for its special access, including a festive dinner in an elegant

private palazzo in Venice; a visit to the Sistine Chapel when it is closed to the public; a reception in

Rome with invited guests from the art world; and lunch with Fellows at the American Academy. In

Madrid we will view two of Spain’s most important private collections. Then in Toledo, we will admire

the sites that inspired El Greco and see the special exhibition arranged in his honor.

I hope you will join us on this fascinating journey.

Sincerely,

Emily K. RaffertyPresident

T H E M E T R O P O L I T A N M U S E U M O F A R T

Sincerely,
