1.2 Benefits
Integrated IP Radio with High Bandwidth and High Efficiency
The OptiX RTN 980 supports integrated IP microwave, high bandwidth, and hightransmission efficiency.
The air interfaces provide channel bandwidth from 7 MHz to 56 MHz and support AMmodes from QPSK to 256 QAM.
The integrated IP radio is capable of transmitting any or severail of the following threetypes of services: Native E1/STM-1, Native Ethernet, and packet services encapsulated
through PWE3. The types of services can be configured by using software. Therefore, the OptiX RTN 980 supports a smooth upgrade from the Hybrid radio to the Packetradio.
The OptiX RTN 980 supports flexible configuration of the transmission modes of
various services. The equipment can transmit TDM E1 services, IMA E1 services, andEthernet services in Native mode or in PWE3 mode.
Each channel of the IP-based radio supports a maximum of 75 Native E1 services or twoSTM-1 services and a maximum Ethernet throughput of 400 Mbit/s.
The OptiX RTN 980 supports XPIC. The 56 MHz RF channel supports a maximumEthernet throughput of 800 Mbit/s.
The OptiX RTN 980 supports adaptive modulation (AM) for improving spectralefficiency and ensuring the availability of the services with a higher priority. In addition, priority levels can be set for Native E1 services and packet services.

New-Generation Multi-Function IF Boards The new-generation multi-function IF boards ISU2/ISX2 support various services over
air interfaces, so that the requirements of all the service application scenarios are met.The supported services type over air interfaces include:
Native E1+ Ethernet
Native STM-1+Native Ethernet
1xSTM-1 or 2xSTM-1
Adopts the optimized air interface QoS technology, which supports quick forwarding of
high-priority services and therefore reduces transmission delay.
Adopts a highly efficient encapsulation technology and therefore increasing the packetservice throughput over the air interface.
Large-Capacity and Network-Oriented Nodal Equipment
TheOptiX RTN 980 is the large-capacity and network-oriented Nodal equipment.
One OptiX RTN 980 subrack supports a maximum of radio links in 14 directions.
Supports the convergence of the TDM radio, Hybrid radio, and Packet radio services.
Adopts the TDM/Packet dual-plane design based on the same platform. The equipment isa type of large-capacity and network-oriented equipment.
Provides a higher order cross-connect capacity of 128x128 VC-4s and a lower ordercross-connect capacity equivalent to 32x32 VC-4s for TDM services.
Provides a packet switching capacity of 22 Gbit/s.
Provides multiple RF configuration modes, and supports XPIC, N+0 protection, 1+1protection, and N+1 protection.
The TDM plane uses the same platform as that of the OptiX MSTP equipment, embedsan MADM, and therefore allows interconnection between the OptiX RTN 980 and the
OptiX MSTP equipment.
The packet service plane provides various Ethernet service processing functions.
Supports the MPLS and PWE3 technologies that emulate and encapsulate TDM E1services, IMA E1 services, and Ethernet services and transmit the services throughMPLS tunnels.
Supports E-line or E-LAN services based on VLAN, QinQ. Supports E-line servicesbased on PW.
Provides various protections for packet services.
Provides various QoS functions.
Provides various OAM functions, including Ethernet OAM, MPLS OAM, ATMOAM, and PW OAM
The OptiX RTN 980 can be directly interconnected with the OptiX PTN packettransmission equipment.
Supports end-to-end service grooming by using the U2000 on the network consisting ofthe OptiX RTN 980 only or the network consisting of the OptiX RTN 980 and other
equipment.

ODU
The ODU is the outdoor unit of the OptiX RTN 900. It performs frequency conversion andamplification of signals.
There are two methods of mounting the ODU and the antenna: direct mounting and separatemounting.
The direct mounting method is normally adopted when a small-diameter and
single-polarized antenna is used. In this situation, if one ODU is configured for oneantenna, the ODU is directly mounted at the back of the antenna. If two ODUs are
configured for one antenna, an RF signal combiner/splitter (hereinafter referred to as ahybrid coupler) must be mounted to connect the ODUs to the antenna. Figure 2-2showsthe direct mounting method.

The separate mounting method is adopted when a double-polarized antenna orbig-diameter and single-polarized antenna is used. Figure 2-3shows the separate method. In this situation, a hybrid coupler can be mounted. That is, two ODUs share one feedboom.
Figure 2-3Separate mounting
The OptiX RTN 980 provides an entire frequency band antenna solution, and supports thesingle-polarized antenna and dual-polarized antenna with a diameter of 0.3 m to 3.7 m and the
corresponding feeder system.

2.2.1 IDU
The IDU 980 is the indoor unit of the OptiX RTN 980.
The IDU 980 adopts the card plug-in design. It can implement different functions byconfiguring different types of boards. All the service boards support hot-swapping.

Types of Radio Links
The OptiX RTN 980 on the convergence ring can converge the services on themicrowave sub-ring or microwave sub-link.
The radio links on the convergence ring can adopt XPIC, N+1, and other RFconfiguration modes to achieve large-capacity transmission.
When adopting Hybrid radio links, the convergence ring can converge the Hybridmicrowave services or TDM microwave services directly.
When adopting Packet radio links, the convergence ring can do as follows:
Converge the Packet microwave services at the access layer and transmit them to thePSN directly for service backhaul.
Converge the Hybrid microwave services or TDM microwave services, encapsulate
them into packet signals through the MPLS/PWE3 technology on the OptiX RTN 980,and transmit them to the PSN directly for service backhaul.
Protection Schemes
On the Hybrid microwave convergence ring, the TDM services can be configured withSNCP, and the Ethernet services can be configured with ERPS.
On the Packet microwave convergence ring, the services can be configured with theMPLS tunnel 1:1 protection or PW 1:1 protection.
3.1.3 Upstream Networking
The OptiX RTN 980 can form a ring network with the upstream equipment, or can be
connected to the upstream equipment through a protection link, to achieve reliable service
backhaul.

Upstream Networking of TDM Services
The OptiX RTN 980 can form a two-fiber bidirectional MS shared protection ring with SDH
equipment through the STM-4 ports, or can be connected to MSTP equipment through the
STM-1/STM-4 ports configured with the 1+1/1:1 linear MSP. Figure 3-3provides an example
of the upstream networking of TDM services.

Upstream Networking of Ethernet ServicesThe OptiX RTN 980 can form an ERPS ring with the metropolitan area network (MAN)
equipment through the GE ports, or can be connected to the MAN equipment through theFE/GE ports configured with the LAG protection. Figure 3-4provides an example of the
upstream networking of Ethernet services.
