ALL:

In the midst of fear and anger; in the midst of mayhem and destruction, God calls us.

With everything else going on, who has time for a feast? We're busy; we'll get around to eating eventually.

In the midst of our anxiety, our worry; in the midst of bill-paying and appointments, God invites us.

We are tempted to just grab a bite, a quick sandwich, a snack to eat while checking email, or working on a project.

The feast is spread! All are invited, all are welcome!

We are invited. We are welcome. We are worthy. How will we respond?

Anthem My eyes for beauty pine ………. Herbert Howells

My eyes for beauty pine, My soul for Goddes grace : No other care nor hope is mine, To heaven I turn my face.

One splendour thence is shed From all the stars above : 'Tis named when God's name is said, 'Tis Love, 'tis heavenly Love.

And every gentle heart, That burns with true desire, Is lit from eyes that mirror part Of that celestial fire.

Postlude Toccata ………. P Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784)

October's Hymn of the Month is Hymn 243, Touch the earth lightly. The writer, Shirley Erena Murray, is a New Zealander, who was married to a Presbyterian minister and lived and worked in Wellington. In this hymn, Mrs Murray addresses the issue of stewardship of the earth's resources, reminding us of our duty to care for the earth and its resources, as gifts from God which we owe to future generations.

She affirms that, although we may have mis-used resources, God is a God of all living, and of all loving and that, by using resources rightly and justly, humanity will be reconnected through Christ.

The composer of the tune Tenderness, Colin Gibson, from Dunedin, New Zealand, has written a gentle tune, with a tender rhythm to reflect the nature of the words. In verse 2, as the words address the issue of mis-use, the tune goes into the minor key, before returning in verses 3 and 4 to the major key.

In this season of Harvest, it is appropriate that we reflect on the stewardship of the planet, our gratitude for the 'gift of great wonder' and our responsibility to 'use the earth gently.

HYMN OF THE MONTH When CH4 was published in 2005, it was greeted with a variety of emotions: a welcome change to CH3 which was seemed stuck in the 1970s; concern that traditional worship items which we had grown up with were being replaced by modern hymns, or hymns from a non-Scottish background; interest in and anticipation of exploring new worship traditions. Over the next months we shall be introducing hymns from CH4 (and perhaps other sources) which we have not used in the past, or have sung only rarely. We plan to present the Hymn of the Month, then repeat it later that month in order to widen our hymn repertoire.

SEEKERS’ CLASSES Do you have any questions about the Christian faith? Questions like ‘What does being a Christian mean? What is the role of the Bible in our lives?
