MADRID BARBARIANS R.F.C. NEWSLETTER NUMBER 5. MAY 2013

The season is over. May has been the month for the North Conquest Tour and friendly matches, a great way of cooling down after a hard league.

We’ve hosted two friendly matches against Corto Rugby Club (France) and Rolls-Royce Rugby Football Club (England), with a Barbarians victory in both matches. Better luck than our tour games against Iruña Rugby Club (Pamplona) and Rugby Club Irun (Irún) where we couldn’t show our best rugby.

We have only two appointments to go in June: the Barbarians Sevens where ten teams will be playing hard to take the winners trophy, and the end of season dinner just after the Spanish Speaking vs. Non Spanish Speaking BaaBaas. what a thrill!!

We would like to thank Sharkie, Jesús and everyone involved in the Tour and Sevens organization. You’ve done a great job.

As usual in our Club, end of season means saying goodbye, or see you later, to some players who are moving back to their home countries. As far as we know by now Ian, Harry, Cristhian, Knick, Jack, Olly and our head coach and player Leon are leaving, but we’re sure that it won’t

be the last time we see them around. Thank you guys for an excellent work and for being members of our worldwide family. Remember that wherever you play in the future, you will always be a Barbarian.

Some go but some come, that’s our Club’s corporate philosophy, so we’ll see new faces after the summer, and in fact we’re already starting to see some great players willing to join in, and of course a couple of great returns like Lote or Jas, who came for the tour and couldn’t resist the temptation of wearing the black and white top again and decided to stay.

Summer is round the corner and training sessions are over, so take a deserved break and start thinking of next season which we’re sure is going to be far better than this one. Rucking all over the world is also taking a break until September, when we will be back with new stuff and new Focus on Players.

Don’t leave all your fitness for September, get your training shoes on and kick the streets, parks and gyms.

But most of all... enjoy yourselves!!

Barbarians North Conquest TourSecond Tour for Madrid Barbarians, this time the northern cities of Pamplona and San Sebastián, which meant two things: good food and good rugby, and who would say no to that?

First stop: PamplonaFamous for the “Encierros”, Pamplona is a beautiful city full of history in each corner (Baabaas Fact: Pamplona is the hometown of Inigo, aka “Pumba”), we weren’t bulls but we were unleashed). The first match was tough; they were young and good, and we had some that haven’t played together for a year. Not an excuse, because we found a team with its spirit intact, and although the first half is not much to note in the second one we did notice and fight until the very end. The third half was remarkable.

To San Sebastian we go (with a stop in Biarritz, France)After an excellent time in Pamplona, it was time to conquer Basque lands. We arrived to San Sebastián on Friday afternoon, we wandered through the narrow streets and enjoyed the sea breeze and the great “Pintxos”. On Saturday, before the tour game we escaped to France, specifically Biarritz, were we watched the Olympique Pays Basque against Stade Français for a Top14 game. A typical day of rugby, people eating, playing around, live music and Baabaas making mischief. Sergio Parisse had the honor of having his picture taken with some Baabaas.

The match was more even, the Baabaas played a predominantly forwards game, but the speed of their backs was difficult to defend. What we lost on the pitch we won off it. After that, we went to enjoy phenomenal & unforgettable third half.

In conclusion, the tour was a success. The Madrid Barbarians made their mark in the North of Spain, made new friends and shown that the Barbarian feeling is forever.
