This volume of "The Ruffner Rock" represents the third year in the existence of William Ruffner Junior High School--named for Dr . William H . Ruffner (1824-1908), the first State Superintendent of Public Instruction ( 1870-1 882) in Virginia. In addition to establishing Virginia 's public school system shortly after the Civil War, Dr. Ruffner had been a chaplain and a pastor and for many years was a professional geologist.

It was from this last vocation of Dr. Ruffner and be­cause this school is to be a solid, enduring institution, that its yearbook is "The Rock . "

The spirited Ruffner athletic teams are the "Saints. " The "fleur-de-lis" is their emblem. Forest green and gold are the school' s colors.

''A Real Cool Guy// Among the teachers and counselors there is one who really stands out. This teacher is dedicated to his students and to the school as well.

He has a lot of patience and a good sense of hwnor, is very intelligent and has a clear lecturing voice , and he also gets along very well with the students.

He is highly respected by the students as "a real cool guy" and has taught everyone the values of good sportsmanship. He is a person this school would not do without.

His school spirit has showed us all that he enjoys being here at Ruffner and enjoys teaching. So we, the yearbook staff, would like to show our appreciation by dedicating this 1973 RUFFNER ROCK to Mr. Dennis W. Cummings.
