SUPPORTING JUNIOR RUGBY

On behalf of the Sydney Rugby Union Board of Directors I welcome all Clubs, sponsors, players and supporters to the 2013 Shute Shield Competition. All Clubs have been busy in the off-season, with the common goal of contesting the Shute Shield Grand Final on 14 September. Once again the premiership will involve 12 Clubs participating in 4 Grades and 3 Colts competitions with high quality rugby each week at every club ground. This season the competition will run for 18 rounds with an eight team final series hoping to repeat the success of last season. The finals format allows for teams who may have had a bit tougher draw to match up against the top 6 teams in the first week of the finals. Last season we saw teams progress through to the Grand Final after finishing seventh and eighth in the competition rounds making for a very exciting September series.During the 2012 season the Sydney Rugby Union and Queensland Rugby Union and all member clubs participated in a full review of Premier Rugby conducted by the Australian Rugby Union. The findings of the review were published just prior to Christmas and the Board has appointed a working party to represent the Union through the process. One of the early points to be established by the ARU has been the confirmation that Premier Rugby is, and will continue to be, the third tier of Australian Rugby. New CEO Bill Pulver made this point very clear at recent meetings of State officials. Our working party will work with the ARU and other Unions to improve all aspects of Premier Rugby to ensure it continues to deliver a sustainable financial model that supports the growth of the game at all levels and provides an enhanced pathway for developing elite talent. One of the key strategies identified is to improve fan engagement and for that we encourage every club supporter to get along to matches, both

home and away to support your team. For those unable to attend we are pleased to announce that once again our Match of the Day will be shown live to air every Saturday on ABC TV. It is the only regular, free to air rugby in Australia and we are delighted to have ABC TV fully committed for the 2013 season.Joining the ABC TV team will be Australia’s most capped front rower and recently retired Waratah Al Baxter. Al will provide sideline comments and a front rowers view of the game to balance up Brett Papworth’s expert commentary. It is interesting to review the ABC TV matches from 2012. In what appears a remarkable statistic of the 26 matches covered in 2012, 16 were decided by 7 points or less, and 5 of those matches, including the Grand Final were decided by 1 point. We also welcome a new radio coverage with Niav Owens hosting “Settling the Score” on ABC 702, and all regional stations from 2.00pm to 5.00pm each Saturday. The show will have a large rugby influence and include around the ground updates on Shute Shield and NSW Country Rugby matches throughout the year. The Shute Shield has built up many great rivalries over the years and the first round of 2013 will provide some great early season contests. 2012 Grand Finalists Southern Districts will go head to head with the Minor Premiers from last year Eastwood, at TG Millner Field. This match is our first round Match of the Day.The mainstay of Club Rugby is without doubt the hundreds of volunteers that help out in many ways around all the clubs. Thank you for your efforts to make your club the best it can be and good luck in 2013. I encourage all supporters of Club Rugby to get along to as many games as you can and support your team, join your Club and become an active member of Premier Rugby. There will be a lot to enjoy in Club Rugby in 2013.

February 25th 2005. Unknown Sydney club player Peter Hewat, makes his Waratahs debut against the Chiefs at the SFS, playing in a backline containing Wallaby stars Lote Tuqiri and Mat Rogers. Given a chance on the recommendation of his club coach at Manly, Brian Melrose, the 27yr old excelled and only one month later, bagged 34pts (three tries, two conversions and five penalties) in a 42-12 victory over the Bulls, breaking the Waratahs individual point scoring record for a single match. By the end of the

season , Hewa t , o r ‘ H - B o m b ’ a s h e b e c a m e a f f e c t i o n a t e l y known, had topped t h e W a r a t a h s t ry scor ing l i s t wi th 10 (st i l l a season record) and finished on top of the Super Rugby individual c o m p e t i t i o n po in t s l adde r. After three years of dazzling the Sydney crowds with his kicking p r o w e s s , t r y scoring feats and

an uncanny ability to sniff out an intercept, Hewat left the Waratahs as their second highest all-time point scorer. Only the great Matt Burke remains ahead of him.The point here is that Hewat was a shining example of the importance of the Shute Shield competition in unearthing Super Rugby stars of the future. At a time when the format of club rugby in Australia is being hotly debated, we would be well served to remember the vital role club rugby has played in feeding the professional ranks. The list of recent graduates is endless. Chris Alcock came to the Waratahs straight from Gordon before moving to the Western Force; Pat McCabe was tearing it up at Rat Park

b e f o r e t e a r i n g up his shoulder in the name of h i s coun t r y a t the 2011 Rugby World Cup and M e l b o u r n e Rebels’ Cadeyrn Neville went from a greenhorn at Manly Oval to the Wallaby training squad in a little under 3 years. Even when you add the names of Nic White, Hugh Pyle and Zack Holmes, you’re still barely scratching the surface. The Waratahs 2013 roster has been boosted by the promising additions of club stars Jed Holloway, Ben Volavola, Cam Crawford, Michael Hodge and Ollie Atkins and with five franchises to fill, there are now around 175+ players required by Super Rugby squads in Australia. We now have a longer season with a fixed Test window as well as an extended Tri-Nations (Rugby Championship), all of which creates a higher rate of attrition and greater injury toll. With the Shute Shield currently providing over 70% of all Super Rugby players, the need for that breeding ground i s g r e a t e r t h a n e v e r before.

by Jim Webster

It has been hard keeping track of all the happenings since we last spoke. Besides, I’m now in possession of another new hip, which has kept me occupied.

But I’ll put on my thinking cap and try to remember all that has taken place. If not all, then at least the happenings I have found important.

We had Lance Armstrong’s shameful admission, unpleasant revelations about the behaviour of Australia’s Olympic swimmers and then were rocked by talk that performance-enhancing drugs may be widespread in our football codes, as well as possible attempts to fix matches and thus infiltrate betting markets. Next came chaos within the Sharks…those naughty Australian cricketers who wouldn’t do their homework…and an old Uni prop’s improved chances of becoming PM.

But we won’t go down that road. And we won’t talk about Beale’s behaviour, or guess when we might see him again.

John O’Neill has again stepped aside as ARU managing director; so did his long-serving deputy Matt Carroll leave his post last week. Matt held senior positions with the NSWRU and ARU over almost two decades. His most important mission was probably CEO of the World Cup 2003 and the following year he was recognised by being awarded the Order of Australia for his services to rugby.

Now running the show is Bill Pulver, a nice guy with impressive business credentials; the hope is he recognizes the problems at grassroots and he needs to go all out to get clubs back on their feet, else commonsense tells you the Waratahs and Wallabies will eventually suffer.

Quade Cooper has also re-signed with the ARU for a further two years. So, with more wins than losses right now and him helping steer the ship, the Reds should steadily improve and be around come the Super Rugby finals. But it’ll be hard work catching those wild Brumbies.

Talking of rugby heavyweights, did you know Bob

Dwyer, 72, survived a heart attack (thankfully off-season) on his Southern Highlands property? He had a few similar near-misses, I’m sure, when taking Australia to our first World Cup victory. Speaking of our national coach, will Robbie Deans remain or be flicked for Ewen McKenzie or even Jake White?

Still on the national scene, it was pleasing to note the record-breaking participation figures, which show a record 323,115 Australians played rugby last year (up a whopping 23.6% on the previous year).

NSW numbers hit an all-time high of 114,350 and that’s the fourth year running NSW has recorded growth in participation. The trick now is to keep them all in the game and not to go drifting elsewhere. And for them all to promise to turn up in extra large numbers every time the Waratahs play at home. You don’t appreciate just how much your support means to their success.

As you know, the Waratahs are gradually improving under Michael Cheika.

It has been hard for me to imagine this rock-hard type being inventive, but he has certainly imposed the ball-in-hand technique and if he approaches the job with the same ruthlessness that he did when playing with Randwick then we’re onto a winner.

He was a tough cookie on the field; just look at his artistic ears. And anyone who can help raise four kids under four (yes, that’s not a spelling mistake) has plenty of panache. He also has a new help in Daryl Gibson who joins Alan Gaffney as assistant coaches.

Jointly, if they can’t turn things around for the Waratahs then I don’t know who can.

Of course, we also have Israel Folau on board. I’ll reserve judgment on him a while longer. It’s unfair to make any early definitive judgment, when it must be hard at times for Izzy to do things instinctively, after coming from two different codes.

When not on duty for the Waratahs, he’ll be playing for University, which only strengthens my belief that they’ll again win the Shute Shield.

But watch those from the Shire….

Did you know Barnaby Joyce, the eloquent Nationals Senate leader, played rugby for New England Under 21s and Central North before delving into politics. Of course, Tony Abbott turned out for Sydney University as a prop in first grade, but are you aware his deputy Joe Hockey played in 60-odd games in lower grades for the Students. In fact, they figured in a famous punch-up one night at training after coach Tony is said to have refused to pick Joe in reserve grade. The result? Abbott won.

Todd Louden? Sydney University’s 2012 premiership winning coach is coaching the famous old Wanderers club in Newcastle.

Mark Bakewell has turned down a lucrative offer to coach in Japan because he didn’t want to leave Eastern Suburbs short of a coach at the start of the season.

Will Brame has been a dashing back-rower for Samoa, Australian 7s and the Waratahs as well as Eastwood, Manly and Northern Suburbs. Now he is winding up his career playing with Forest in Subbies. Matt Ryan, the old Wallaby prop, is another big name in the Subbies, fill ing a coaching role with Roseville Brothers.

If there was an ocean swimming race for club presidents, Tony McQuillen, the new man at Easts, would be a hot favourite. Barrister Tony dons Speedos, cap and goggles to contest big races from Palm Beach to Whale Beach and Bondi to Bronte.

If the money is up, be wary of playing golf against Chris Malone, the Sydney University coach. While playing in England with Bath, he held a handicap of six.

Dylan Sigg is back from the Brumbies to play for the Manly Marlins and thereby hangs a tale. He recently went to the Hong Kong Sevens with

Manly colleagues Dane Maraki, Will Helu, Harry Bergelin and Richard Hooper in a team called the Penguins in a big international event played as a curtain-raiser. Coached by Tim Lane, they beat teams scattered with former All Blacks and Fijian internationals and Sigg was voted Player of the Tournament. Still on Manly, new recruit Will Helu is living in Willie Ofahengaue’s old house.

One south of the harbour club is hoping to snare a couple of top New Zealanders in the next week or two.

When dashing fullback Dave Feltscheer suffered a graze on his arm while in Cuba on Warringah’s pre-season tour, he thought nothing of it and took off on a tour. However, when the arm swelled to more than twice its normal size, he made a 10-hour bus ride to Costa Rica because there was no medical centre on the island where he was. When a nurse confided after a few days that he was facing surgery to save the arm, Dave armed himself with oral antibiotics and took off the next morning on a 36-hour trip home. Happily, he’ll be on deck against Penrith today.

Today you’ll see the University of Technology NSW logo on the front of the Gordon jumper for the first time. In a progressive move, eight players from the club will have up to 100 per cent of their fees paid, with the size of the payment largely determined by the level of team the player has reached. Both parties are hopeful the scheme will continue next year, with the club keen to see the number of scholarships will increase each year.

Seti Tafua is making a marvellous recovery from the spinal injury suffered playing for Northern Suburbs last year that put him into a wheelchair for the rest of his life. When Norths went to New Zealand a couple of weeks ago, they found him in good spirits, exercising vigorously with weights and talking of a career as a rugby official.

Rugby News, which commenced in the same year as the Shute Shield, 1923, rings in its 90th Birthday. It is a wonderful achievement that is due to the advertising support of the Australian Rugby Union/NSWRU/SRU and Waratahs.

In addition, after our problems last year, new advertisers, who are whole-hearted supporters of grassroots rugby, quickly gave their support. Each has stated the importance of club rugby to the elite levels of the game.

My very warm thanks to Board members of the ARU and NSWRU for their concern and interest in the continuance of Rugby News. It is a joy to think Eric

“Spilo” Spilsted, a champion of rugby who passed away in 2004, currently has a bigger smile on his face. Thanks to our printer, we have been able to increase the page size of Rugby News and therefore the type size, which will please many readers. Please let us know if you like it.Soon we will bring you some extracts from early issues. Some will bring back memories. Others will fascinate. Please support Rugby News by buying your own copy. It is one thing to have a glut of Wallabies and Waratahs on your books, but it is another to have them turn up to play. Sydney University might be the team to beat in the Shute Shield, but it would be foolish to forget the Students sneaking home 15-14 after trailing 3-14 in last year’s rumbustious grand final. If the Students do bid for their thirtieth premiership in the grand final on September 14, who will be their opponents? Uni coach Chris Malone won’t hazard a guess, although he won’t rule out Manly, Southern Districts, Eastwood, Northern Suburbs or Parramatta.

University stressed their extraordinary depth of talent by racing in seven tries to one to blitz University of Queensland 43-7 to retain the Australian Club Championship in the curtain raiser to the Waratahs v Auckland Blues a fortnight ago.

Matt Briggs’ off-season switch from Penrith to coach West Harbour will bring him into

opposition with brother John, who coaches Gordon, while University’s Chris Malone will clash with his brother-in-law John Manenti, who is coach of Eastwood.

EASTWOOD v SOUTHERN DISTRICTSat millner Field

Haunted by injury problems, the Woodies fell away last season but they’ll be pushing for a grand final spot. “All good,” says coach John Manenti. Losing superboot Pierre Hola with a pec muscle injury from the third round was a blow but his injury has fully recovered and the other walking wounded plus Jim Hilgendorf are back. However, prop Barry Fa’amausili and back Ben Seymour have headed to France and flanker Miles McCaffrey gone to Queensland to study medicine, but there is the consolation of acquiring ARU National Academy centre Tom Hill from Gordon.

Southern Districts coach Cam Blades hopes to build on their near miss in the grand final (they lost 15-14 after leading 14-3) by insisting his lively young team continue to play expansive rugby. They have recruited some exciting young talent, including brothers Michael and Allan Ala’alatoa, a forceful pair of props from West Harbour who are in the ARU national academy. Waratah John Ulugia has gone to Easts, but the Rebels have gained hooker Steven Fualau, who has played for the Crusaders and Auckland, and lock Bon Maui from the Auckland Juniors.

EASTERN SUBURBS v NORTHERN SUBURBSat woollahra

With Scott Fava back as coach, watch for Norths to follow up their semi-final loss to Sydney University with another strong season. No high priced imports here as Fava looks to blend last year’s highly successful Colts into the big picture. Superboot Dave Harvey has gone to Warringah, but Fava has no problems with Scott Daruda coming from Manly to take his place. “They’re different players,” he says. “Scott mightn’t have Dave’s goal-kicking skills, but he’s

a better defender and gives us plenty in attack. On a higher level, we lose nothing with Scott at No 10.” Sharp back Mitch Walton has gone to Gordon.

Again coached by Mark Bakewell, Easts, who missed the play-offs last year by a humble bonus point, will get a huge boost to their forward power by the arrival of Wallaby Mitch Chapman and his Waratah colleague John Ulugia later in the season. Harking to Easts’ feeble finish last season, Bakewell says: “We’ll play smarter this year.”

PARRAMATTA v SYDNEY UNIvERSITYat merrylands rsL rugby Park

Beware of Parramatta. Coach Glen Christini has delved far and wide to recruit a mix of lively Polynesian backs and beefy New Zealand forwards (almost a dozen newcomers) that surely will be in the play-offs. They include Dan Rawaqa, a fly-half for Fiji in Sevens and 15s, and Waisale Beci from the Fijian Sevens. Another recruit is Charlie Leaeno, a second-rower has played lots of league with teams like the Bulldogs and Wakefield Trinity. Little rugby, though.

Although he doesn’t expect to see much of former league icon Israel Folau, Sydney University coach Chris Malone is delighted with the arrival of Waratah winger Peter Betham from

a stint in New Zealand. The depth of talent at University is mind-boggling, but thankfully for rivals so many will be away on representative duty. Halfback Matt Schwager has departed for a life in farming following two knee reconstructions.

WEST HARBOUR v RANDWICK at concord oval

With effervescent Matt Briggs coming from Penrith to take over the coaching with help from Peter Koen, Wests, a mine of Polynesian talent who mean business in 2013, headed to New Zealand for a two week camp. They have lost the Ala’alatoa brothers and fullback Oleni Ngungutau to Southern Districts, but newcomers include David Oeofua, a Samoan development player who joined the Balmain Subbies last season thinking they were a senior outfit. No matter the result, Wests will be entertaining.

With backing from club president Bob Dwyer and the likes of the Ellas and Simon Poidevin, new coach Wade Kelly has recruited a group of young players that will run the ball from everywhere in the Randwick tradition. Almost a dozen of them. The names are largely unknown, but according to Kelly, that soon will change. A Randwick junior, he played league for the Broncos and North Sydney Bears before heading off to Europe for 10 years.

tip: randwick

GORDON v MANLYat chatswood oval

There has long been a fierce rivalry between these clubs and Gordon coach John Briggs says: “We’ve got a healthy talent pool set in a good young bunch.” The Highlanders have acquired lively back Mitch Walton and second-rower Severo Domoni, whose dad Sam was a towering Waratah second-rower, from Norths but have lost centre Tom Hill to Eastwood and Mike Greenway to Bay of Plenty.

With outstanding trial form behind them and Tim Lane back as coach, Manly believe they are mentally stronger than when they lost a preliminary final to Southern Districts last year. With prop Tim Fairbrother returning from Harlequins in the UK, Will Helu recruited from the Tongan national team and Dylan Sigg back from the Brumbies, the Marlins look the goods, with midfield back Sam Lane a player to watch.

Flyhalf, Dan Rawaqa, a Fiji representative, is one of Parramatta’s many gains for 2013.

Sam Harris’ departure to the Honda club in Japan has resulted in Haig Sare becoming coach of the Green Rats, with Lachlan Fear returning to the club as an assistant after stints at Gordon and Easts. Dave Harvey’s arrival from Norths to kick the goals is huge boost to Warringah’s eager beavers, who have warmed up with the pre-season trip to Cuba. Look to Catchpole Medal winner Hamish Angus to make some big plays.

Penrith’s new coach is Teli Tuipulotu, once a dashing back with the club. To help in the revival of his old team, iconic prop Pete Nuimata has come out of retirement to act as a father figure to

the youngsters assembled by club president Jim Hook, who is determined that rugby must maintain a strong presence in the area and the Emus avoid lop-sided results in the lower grades.

hamish angus... warringah

With Warringah having two p laymakers in D a v e H a r v e y a n d H a m i s h A n g u s , skipper Angus says: “One of us will wear 10 and the other 15.

And in case something happens to us, we have a Super Rugby halfback in Josh Holmes. With a lot of players having shed their inexperience, this year is pay-back time for the Rats. We might lack strength and size, but we’ve got lots of speed and a mobile pack. With Sam Harris having gone to Japan, we have a coach in Haig Sare, who as a former Warringah player knows what makes Warringah tick.”

andrew cox... Parramatta

According to skipper A n d r e w C o x , i f Parramatta can harden things up the middle, they’ll again finish well up the table. “Off the cuff, we’ve got the

backs out wide to match it with any team, with our No 13 Jesse Leota, who was runner up in the Catchpole Medal, one to watch. Adam Coleman, our big, very tall second-rower, will be a key man up front.”

ben batger... Eastwood

Eastwood’s dashing fullback Ben Batger can see no reason why the Woodies can’t regain the title they won in 2012. “That’s our aim,” he says. “Last year we

were heavily hit by injury (they lost to Norths in a semi-final) but the boys are all fit again, with Pierre Hola and Jim Hilgendorf back in midfield. Steve Cummins and Hugh Roach are two young blokes to watch.”

aJ Gilbert...northern suburbs

No r the rn Subu rbs f lanker AJ Gi lber t , sporting a new page-boy s ty le ha i rcu t , be l i e ves No r the rn S u b u r b s ’ b i g g e s t asset this season will be defence. “It was last year, too, when Uni beat us in the semi-finals,” he says. “We’ve lost our superboot Dave Harvey but no matter. Coach Scott Fava has recruited Scott Daruda, who is just as good a game manager, from Manly.”

Pauliasi taumoepeau...Eastern suburbs

Easts captain Pauliasi Taumoepeau says the Beasties, who missed the play-offs last year by a single bonus point, are poised for a big season because the players now understand what coach Mark Bakewell is about. “We’ve got the right players in the right position this year,” says the powerful No 8. “Watch for Elijah Niko to make a big impact at outside-centre.”

tom matthews... Gordon

Gordon’s biggest off-season capture could well turn out to be Tim Wallace, the former Wallaby fly-half who is assist ing coach John Briggs as backs coach. “We learn something from him at every training,” says Gordon centre Tom Matthews, who is looking forward to the Highlanders having their best season in ages. “We’ve got a couple of ex-ITM players from New Zealand and lots of talented young blokes.”

“We are very serious about club rugby,” said Waratah coach Michael Cheika. “It is crucial to us. Where else are our players going to come from?”Speaking at Tuesday’s launch of the Shute Shield surrounded by players in club jumpers of various hues, this passionate man declared, “We are on a constant search for new talent and will be monitoring EVERY club game. If I or one of our coaching staff can’t be there, we will watch it on video.“We want to make the Shute Shield a direct feeder for the NSW team. We want the clubs to become mini academies so we can download them and they use what they want to produce players. That’s the way it has always been and that’s the way it is going to go back to.”He said the Waratahs soon will appoint a Chief Scout who will build a network across the State of scouts who have an eye for a talented player.“We will be checking the Waratah Shield, GPS and State schools, juniors and Colts, too. It’ll be a real community thing,” Cheika continued. “I’m telling you, there are players in the Shute Shield that can

come and play in our team. You only have to look at Ben Volavola, who was playing club football last year and already has been a starter in our team. They are out there.” Cheika said he would send Waratah players back to their clubs as often as was humanly possible with the dual purpose of helping boost the Shute Shield competition and giving players the chance to play their way back into favour with the Waratahs. Injured players will use it to regain fitness and form.Like a gold miner fossicking for precious nuggets, Cheika is serious about searching the club ranks for players of potential and in the summer months recruited 10 non-contracted players to train and have the odd run with the Waratahs.“It was a huge encouragement for club players,” said one of them, AJ Gilbert, the Norths flanker who was at the Shute Shield launch. He said, “There are so many guys running around in the Shute Shield who are on the cusp of getting to the next level of Super Rugby and often are as talented as guys who are contracted.”

and Michael Hooper (front centre) at the Waratahs. AJ Gilbert (front right), invited training group player, was a standout and received Man of the Match in a Waratahs trial.

On the last Australia Day weekend Eastwood Rugby travelled to Cowra to play cricket against the Cowra Rugby Club for the Cowra Cup. It was the 30th anniversary of this Annual cricket match and the first match without the late, great Bill "The Colt" Rowlands, who passed away last year. The ‘Woodies had two rookies this year, they being Brett Papworth and Andrew Johnson whose average age was reduced to 50 years old while Cowra fielded a younger side.Eastwood prevailed for the first time in seven years with Andrew Jones scoring runs and taking 3 catches while Pappy made 50 runs and a stumping. Andrew Johnson took two wickets and made some good runs. Andrew Jones was Cowra's selection for “John Creagh” Player of the Match and Adam Mickeljohn was Eastwood's selection for their Man of the match. A new award for the player who enjoyed and played for the whole weekend on and off the field was presented to Brett Papworth.A great time was had by all with the Eastwood team comprising Gerard Woods (Capt), Nick Creagh, Daniel Woods, Tom Vincent, Andrew Johnson, Bryant “Cec” Feltham, John Waldegrave, Jim Feggans, Peter “Bum” Watt, Ben Watt, Brett Papworth, Andrew Jones, Young OZ and evergreen Neil “Monster” Tyler. Some of the Eastwood Players who were in attendance but not fit for duty were David Creagh (HRT – Hip Replacement Team) and Graeme Kay while the Eastwood Scorer was Keith “Bonna” Bennett and his assistant, Phil “Big Phil” Cronan. The Eastwood supporters who made the trip were Joy “Jumfa” Feltham, Bob Portus, Deidre Joy, Davinia Feggans, Jacqui Woods, Ainsley Woods, James Woods, Katrina Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Campbell Johnson, Natasha Papworth, Grace Papworth and the entire Tyler clan of Mandie Tyler, Meg Tyler, Irene Tyler and Ruby Tyler.I t was a most enjoyable and sometimes forgettable weekend.

Wallabies forwards coach, Andrew Blades took time out last month to attend the Mid North Coast Representat ive team training session at Port Macquarie on the Sunday morning and then later that same day he worked with the Mid N o r t h C o a s t G o l d Academy Squad at Coffs Harbour. It was very much appreciated from all on the Mid North Coast for the time given by a top bloke.

Late last year all the delegates from the NSW Country Rugby Zones attended a meeting in Sydney and were fortunate that the NSW Waratah Coach, Michael Cheika took time out to address the meeting. ‘Cheik’ outlined his plan for this season and beyond in 2014 and everyone was very impressed with his approach and plans. His presentation was something they haven’t heard at any previous Zone meetings. The feeling of the delegates was that the Waratahs were in good hands!

The Sydney University Rugby Football Club defended their 2012 Laffan Cup title by being crowned the 2013 Champions on a miserable day at Nepean Rugby Park last month. Due to the unavailability of another University the Students entered two squads into the annual Laffan Cup and Australian University Rugby Union Selection Trials. The “Blue” team, a young side made up of predominantly Colts players, lost their opening round game against an experienced University of Queensland side 0-7 before accounting for the University of Western Sydney side 7-nil and Melbourne University 14-10.The “Gold” team, 2013 Laffan Cup Champions, won both of their opening matches 12-nil against Melbourne University and 17-7 against University/Norths (Canberra). The final was against the University of Queensland with “Gold” winning 13-7.Congratulations to all players who participated in the 2013 Laffan Cup and to the coaches and managers who gave up their Saturday to assist their teams.

Wallabies Forwards Coach, Andrew Blades.
