A rugged (or ruggedized, but also ruggedized) System isa System specifically designed to reliably operate in harsh usageenvironments and conditions, such as strong vibrations, extremetemperatures and wet or dusty conditions.

Various Rugged Systems are Rugged Laptop’s, PDA’s(Personal DigitalAssistant), Printer’s, Monitor's & Touch Screen’s.

They are designed from inception for the type of rough use typifiedby the harsh usage conditions, not just in the external housing butin the internal components as well.

SHOCK RESISTANCE This is a measure of how much shock load a rugged laptop canwithstand and still operate properly. This test is typically measured by the height andnumber of the drops that a rugged laptop can endure. The drop surface is usuallydefined as two-inch-thick plywood over a steel plate over concrete and a drop distanceof 36 inches.. Laptops are inspected after each drop and booted up for a function checkperformed after each drop.

WATER RESISTANCE Water and moisture is hazardous to many electrical components of any laptop. This specification measures the performance ability of a rugged laptop afterbeing exposed to different amounts of water and moisture levels.

DUST RESISTANCE Air venting systems for cooling tend to collect dust and dirt. For thisreason most rugged laptops are designed to dissipate heat without the use of fans.Materials in the casing are use as heat sinks to prevent dust and dirt from entering theinside of the case – CPU heat is released through the casing.

VIBRATION RESISTANCE Rugged laptops are often used in vehicles, and around otherequipment. These workhorses need to stand up to continuous vibration. Constantvibration can cause keyboard damage and damage to internal components of regularoffice or home laptop computers.

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE Rugged computers need to perform while exposed toextreme temperatures. From arctic condition to dessert conditions, some rugged laptopcan operate in a temperature range between -32° to 60° C (-10° to 140° F). Usually anoptional feature, rugged laptops can also be equipped with a hard drive heater forstartup and operation in freezing temperatures. Diagnostic software can even monitorinternal conditions to prevent outages due to extremes of heat and cold.

Rugged laptops for the oil and gas industries are key piece of technology in order to handle the extreme operations of the wells.

The oil and gas industries should use the most advanced equipmentand devices to safely drill into the earth’s crust. The wells should beplanned carefully by inspecting resources through the aid of technology.

An error from exploration to transportation of petroleum isunacceptable or it may cause severe damage to the environment.

In the exploration phase, rugged laptops for oil and gas industriesare crucial because petroleum geologists and geophysicists usuallyspend time in the field to find basic evidence of hydrocarbon

generation. Rugged laptops for oil and gas industries are also useful at the time

of oil extraction. Oil and gas extraction is not simply done by drillingan oil well in the approximate location of the oil.

Two of the most important aspects of owning a rugged laptop are flexibility andmobility. Rugged laptops gives the ability to work in a wide variety of conditions and

environments. If the work requires in outdoors, in inclement weather, or in other harsh

conditions, then we probably will like the advantages of going rugged. Rugged laptops are equipped with sealed keyboards and specially designed cases

to protect against, moisture, water, and other liquids. Rugged laptops are designed to withstand knocks, drops and shocks. Extra

design precautions protect the CPU, HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) and optical drives.SSDs (Solid State Drives) are optional, and eventually should be standardequipment in rugged laptops.

We no longer have to worry about exposure to the elements or changes inatmospheric pressure. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, fog, dust, sand, extreme coldand heat, salt spray and humidity have all been considered in the designstandards for rugged laptops.

A rugged laptop can be outfitted to guard against electromagnetic transmissionsand will work properly in such conditions.

Computers that ride around in patrol cars have a hard life. Besides the inherenthazards of sloshed coffee and dumped Slurries, they are subjected to vibration,dust, temperature extremes, and vicarious abuse instigated by the results andassignments displayed on their screens.

The typical road warrior machine won’t last a week in a police environment.

They are highly useful for the ambulance services as well, as the basic first aidcan be done to the patient through the video conferencing, In order to increasethe life of the equipment rugged systems(laptop, monitors, PDA’s) should comein to picture.

When it comes to the fire safety systems these rugged systems play a veryprominent role, those systems can be used to navigate the correct location intime, so that the damage can be minimized.
