How to winThe first to complete the construction of two personal goals wins the game.

SetupTake one of each of the four colored sticks and set them on the first tetrahedron (the one on the big stick). The position of the individ-ual colors doesn’t matter. This is called the structure and will continually be expanded during the game.Place all the other sticks on the game mat, sorted by color. This is called the “stick-re-serve”. Sticks placed in the stick reserve must always be placed on a space in the corresponding color of the stick. Shuffle the goal deck with the secret patterns and give two goals to each player and place the deck on the game mat. Shuffle the Action deck, give two cards to each player and place the deck on the game mat.

Playing the gameThe player who most recently lost a game of any kind, starts the game. After that, players take alternating turns. Each turn, you may choose one of these two actions:• Play a Action Card• Change a goal

Play a cardPlay one of the Action cards from your hand and put it in the discard pile, face up. Then you must add all the sticks in the ‘+’ section of the card to the structure and op-tionally remove the stick in the ‘-’ section of the card. If the stick in the remove section is gray, it means that you can remove any color. This can be done in any order. You can always play a card, even if you can’t do everything the Action card says you can or should do.

Adding Sticks• Sticks added must be taken from the

stick-reserve, always taking the stick closest to the “Start” edge of the mat.

• If there are no sticks left in the reserve of a specific color, you can’t place sticks of that color on the structure.

Removing Sticks• Sticks removed must be added to the

stick-reserve, always placing them on the closest available space towards the “End” edge of the mat.

• You can only remove sticks of a specific color, if there are at least 5 sticks of that color on the structure. This is indicated on the game mat; if there are sticks in the area between the line and the Start

When playing this card, you must add one green and one yellow stick to the struc-ture and you may remove a red stick.

edge, you cannot remove sticks of that color.• If you remove a stick that is attached to a tetrahedron in

both ends, it must be replaced with one of the sticks you are adding this turn. This means you can only remove such a stick if you can replace it right away.

Tetrahedrons• You must add a tetrahedron between any two sticks. This

does not count as adding a stick.• If a tetrahedron at any point is only connected to one stick,

remove it. This does not count as removing a stick.

Black Sticks• Black sticks have no function in the game play.• You can at any time add a black stick to stabilize the struc-

ture. • You can remove a black stick at any time.

Discard and Draw New CardsYou may discard your second card face down immediately af-ter playing an Action card. Whether you do or not, draw action cards until you have a hand of two. This means that at the end of your turn, you’ll always have two Action cards in hand.If you can’t draw cards because the Action deck is empty, shuf-fle the discard.

Change a goalYou pick one of your goals and discard it, face down. This will remain hidden for the rest of the game. You can no longer claim that goal. You draw another goal from the goal deck. You cannot claim points for any goals in a turn, where you changed a goal. You may not play or discard Action cards in a turn where you change a goal.

5

Page 6: Rules stick stack

Claiming Goals and ending the gameIf at any time during your turn one of your goals is completed, you can immediately place it face up on the table. You have now claimed that goal. You then draw a new goal.Once a goal is claimed, it can never be lost. You can claim multiple goals in a turn.

When you claim your second goal, you immediately win the game.

Longer gameIf you wish, you and your opponent can at the start of the game agree to play a longer game aiming for three, four or even more goals. However, it should be noted that the structure will never shrink in size meaning that the longer the game is, the fewer sticks will be available in the reserve, making it considerably harder to do anything.

FAQQ: What if some of the structure fall off in my turn?A: If you can recreate the structure do so. Your opponent should assist you in this. If you cannot recreate the structure, you have lost the game. However, it should be noted that Stick-Stack is not a dexterity game and this is not the way it is intend-ed to be won.

Q: I want to replace a stick in the center of the structure, but I am afraid the structure will collapse or some will fall off if I do soA: Get your opponent or another person to help you by stabiliz-ing the structure while you replace the relevant stick. You may even temporarily disassemble the structure as long as you can assemble it correctly afterwards.

Q: What if there are no more Tetrahedrons?A: In the unlikely event this should happen, try to stabilize the structure in another way, remove some not needed black sticks and take tetrahedrons from there or – if you have a second game – borrow them from that. It is not the intention that the number of tetrahedrons should limit the game.

Page 8: Rules stick stack

Example of play:This example is started four turns into the game and 8 sticks have been added to the structure.

The game is shown from two angles. Green arrows point on added sticks and red arrows shown the removed stick in the example.

Brian adds a red and a blue stick. There are not yet five yellow sticks on the structure, so he cannot remove one. The red stick is placed to get closer to his “connected red” objective, while the blue stick is placed away from the other blue sticks. However unwilling Brian is helping Alice with her “parallel blue” objective.

Two StarsTwo adjacent tetrahedrons each with three sticks connected in the goal color, but with the stick con-necting the two tetrahedrons to be in a different color than the goal color. This connecting stick may not be black, as these do not influence game play.

RingSix stick in the goal color and six tetrahedrons forming a ring.

8 Parallel sticksStick of the goal color with the same orientation eg. parallel. They do not have to be con-nected in any way. Notice, that there are four different orien-tations present in the structure.

10 Connected sticks10 connected sticks in the goal color, forming any pattern. They can connect in multiple places and do not have to form any specific pattern as long as each of the 10 sticks is con-nected to at least one of the other 10 sticks.

Goal card overviewThere are 20 goals. Five different in each of the four colors.
