The Marathon is returning to Merseyside on Sunday 9th October and tens of thousands of people will be convergingon Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead Park on Wirral to witness around 9,000 runners taking on the challenge ofthe first RunLiverpool Marathon.
The last Mersey Marathon took place in Liverpool in 1992 and since that time everyone has come to associate themarathon with London. Despite the big numbers that take part in the annual sporting phenomenon, the LondonMarathon turns down approximately 80,000 applicants every year, with most disappointed ‘would be’ marathonrunners just hoping for better luck next year.
Put simply, there has been no real competition for the London Marathon for too long and, with the global appeal thatLiverpool now has, we would like to start to create a credible alternative for marathon runners everywhere.
Many people would like to see a new, dynamic sporting event on the streets of Merseyside and what better event thanthe marathon?
Since the launch of the event in February many thousands of applications have been received from as far afield asAmerica, Bermuda, Dubai, Australia and almost every European country. That is clear testimony that Liverpool andthe Liverpool City Region is now a major tourism destination!
Merseyside will extend a warm welcome to the many, many visitors that will come to Liverpool and Birkenhead on 9thOctober and we hope they will all enjoy their time on Merseyside and for the runners, the 26.2 mile challenge thatawaits them.
The RunLiverpool Marathon organising team would ask that you to come out, enjoy and support this fantastic newevent.
This magazine will outline the plans for the race weekend and hopefully answer any questions you may have aboutthe marathon event.

As mentioned in the introduction there hasn’t been a marathonon Merseyside since 1992. At that time there had been amarathon craze for more than a decade but one by one theydisappeared and just one event has stood the test of time, TheLondon Marathon.
It is generally acknowledged that the London Marathon iseffectively now an industry in itself. It has generated tens ofmillions of pounds for good causes over the years and just asmuch, if not more, for the local economy.
With the changing profile of Liverpool - and the Liverpool CityRegion - and the fact that there is no other serious competitionfor the London Marathon, it is widely felt that the time is rightto challenge the dominance and bring some of the MarathonMagic to Merseyside! Whilst it must be pointed out theRunLiverpool Marathon doesn’t seek to compete head on withLondon, we would nevertheless like to offer at least 80,000disappointed and rejected marathon applicants a more thancredible alternative.
To demonstrate the demand there is in the marathonmarketplace, Brighton staged new marathon event 2 years agoand it was an immediate success. Attracting more than 12,000entries in year one (2010) the event also brought in an estimated£3.5 million to boost the local economy. In the second year(2011) entries increased to 15,000 and within three weeks ofentries opening for 2012 the event has again sold out taking18,000 entries. Proof if proof was needed that there isconsiderable opportunity for good quality marathon events.
Liverpool has a great opportunity to create and deliver a firstclass marathon event that will have global appeal. The spreadof entries for the first RunLiverpool Marathon is alreadysupporting that perception.
Why has the Marathon returned to Merseyside?

Since then a lot has changed, not least of all the demand forroad use especially on Sundays.
It would be impossible to host the 2011 marathon on a similarcourse to the old Mersey Marathon and consequently thecourse has been designed to minimise the impact to otherroad users, residents and businesses.
The course has been planned with the local communities inmind as much as the runners and we hope that given all thedifficulties associated with the use of 26 miles of urban roadwe have come up with a great compromise that will keepeveryone happy.
Birkenhead Park is considered to be by far the best location fora major event such as a marathon. The minimal use of roadsbetween Birkenhead and New Brighton will see the leastamount of disruption in the early part of the race withrunners returning along the promenade and back throughthe Dock section of Birkenhead further minimisinginconvenience.
Once the runners access the Queensway Tunnel they will havecompleted just short of 12 miles on their 26 mile journey.
Emerging on the Liverpool side of the river the runners thentake on a four mile stretch out of the city as far as Sefton Parkbefore returning to a spectacular finish at the Pier Head.
The full 26.2 mile marathon course starts in Birkenhead Parkand finishes at the Pier Head in Liverpool – and that’s a lot of
public highway. Obviously it is impossible to stage an event ofthis nature and not inconvenience other road users and localcommunities.
In planning the event for the thousands of runners that willtake part in the race, the planners took into account how theroads will be used and for how long. With some runnerstaking as much as six hours to complete the course the ideawas to minimise road use as much as possible. By takinginto account the use of roads in Birkenhead Park, PrincesPark, Sefton Park and the use of the waterfront promenadeand the Queensway Tunnel, it was possible to reduce publichighway use by as much as seven miles.
The course was also split into two so best use was made ofboth Wirral and Liverpool with both sides being split intozones. Wirral comprises Zones One and Two whilst Liverpoolis Zones Three, Four and Five.
The event is subject to the provision of a Special EventTemporary Traffic Regulation Order which is paid for by therace organisers in order to facilitate the necessary roadclosures. RunLiverpool Marathon Limited has workedextensively with Wirral and Liverpool City Councils in order toplan and execute the most efficient road closure plan theevent will safely allow.
Depending where you live on the course the roads will closeeither earlier or later in the day – see timetables on followingpages.
The last time a marathon was staged in Liverpool the entire course was contained in Liverpool, starting at Hillfoot Playing Fields and heading north as far as Bootle before heading backthrough the city centre to finish back at Hillfoot.

FUNDRAISING IS A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT, FOR LIVERPOOL LAW FIRM
CANTER LEVIN AND BERG’S MATT ROBERTS PUTS HIS BEST FOOTFORWARD FOR CHARITY
Leading Merseyside law firm, Canter Levin and Berg (CLB) and sister company FirstResponse Law (FRL) Limited have donated thousands of pounds to the British Red Crossand pledged their support by selecting the organisation as the firm’s chosen charity for2011/2012.
The group has already donated thousands through their sponsorship of the charity’sannual ‘Snow Ball’ event - a formal dance and auction which provides funds for the BritishRed Cross in Merseyside - one member of staff at FRL is going quite a few extra miles toraise money.
Matthew Roberts (pictured), Operations Director at First Response Law, has signed up to take on the Liverpool Marathon inOctober as well as signing up for next year’s Yorkshire ‘Three Peaks Challenge’, which will see Matthew scale the largest peaksin Yorkshire. For this particular challenge Matt will be joined by colleague Ian Fitzpatrick – a partner at Canter Levin and Berg.
Matt is both excited and nervous about the challenges ahead. When questioned he said; “Both the marathon and the ThreePeaks have their challenges and require months of training, but both will be fun and should hopefully raise a lot of money for agreat cause.
“We are looking to raise around £20,000 in sponsorship from all of the activities. The British Red Cross is an absolutelyfantastic charity, and does so much good work helping in communities across the world. I hope that my efforts, and those ofmy colleagues, can help the Red Cross continue to help those in crisis across the Merseyside region and in crisis struck areasacross the globe, particularly in Africa. It’s extremely fulfilling for everybody at CLB to know that our efforts are going todirectly help those in need wherever that help is most needed.”
