About The Event

The Five-O 5K honors all men and women in uniform who dedicate their lives in making Houston safe. This run celebrates and appreciates all the dedication and support that Law Enforcement Torch Run officers have to keep the Flame of Hope burning for Special Olympics Texas for 50 years. As we run 3.1 miles we honor all of the Law Enforcement Torch Run members who are no longer with us, such as our beloved Sergeant Paul Weido and Officer Marco Zarate.

Join us as we run with our LETR group and thank them for raising over $1 million per year to fund athletic programs for over 60,000 participating Texas athletes with intellectual disabilities. Of every dollar raised, 92¢ goes directly to programs for Special Olympics Texas athletes. Thank you for your support. Together we promote dignity, equality and opportunity for all people.

Sergeant Paul S. Weido Upon the untimely death of Sgt Paul S. Weido in December 2018, Houston Police Department’s (HPD) LETR team lost its most dedicated and veteran member. Paul was a beloved Torch Runner for 28 years! Through his dedication, Paul received numerous Life Saving Awards and in his honor, HPD’s Life Saving Award is being renamed the “Sgt Paul S Weido Life Saving Award”. The HPD LETR team knows that Paul will be running with us in spirit and we will continue to honor his memory.

Officer Marco Zarate Officer Marco Zarate was a committed LETR member from the Bellaire Police Department since 2012. He was engaged with all fundraisers in the area, including the statewide Torch Run where he led the motorcade police escort to Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. Zarate’s biggest joy was being a part of the SOTX athletes’ lives, and keeping the Flame of Hope burning bright.
