HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTSMonmouth Park has been located in the town of Oceanport, at its current

site, since 1946.

RUNNING LINESThe Oceanport was originally a sprint on the main track, and Decathlon

won two editions of the race in 1956-57. Decathlon was also named sprint champion in both of those seasons.

Accordant, bred and owned by Colonial Farm, won the 1963 edition of the Oceanport. The colt was trained by Joe Kulina, whose son, Robert, is the Vice President and General Manager of Monmouth Park.

In 1984, the classy Cozzene made his turf debut and took full advantage of the new surface, giving a hint of his ability by winning the Cliff Hanger at the Meadowlands and finishing third in that year’s inaugural Breeders’ Cup Mile. The following year Cozzene won three stakes on the grass: the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Longfellow Handicap and the Oceanport, the latter two at Monmouth Park. That earned him an Eclipse Award as champion grass horse.

Not contested in 1996 due to Hurricane Bertha.Run on a sloppy main track in 2000. The winner, North East Bound, went

on to capture the Meadowlands Cup and ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, while the runner-up, Rize, went on to capture the Iselin Handicap.

The 2003 runner-up, Balto Star, prepped in the Oceanport for his upset victory in the Grade I United Nations Handicap later that summer.

Kip Deville finished third as the beaten favorite in the 2007 Oceanport but returned to Monmouth later in the year to capture the biggest race of his career, the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
