President’s Page This afternoon has been a pleasurable and inspiring one for me. I just finished viewing portions of a disc sent to me by George Nosky, our Club photographer and pictorial historian. Once again George, in addition to skillfully taking pictures of the vehicles, has captured the spirit of the depicted events. While many of the automobiles shown from the various Concours d’Elegance are notably rare and beautiful, I don’t think the owners show any more enthusiasm, delight or satisfaction than our Club members do when we get the opportunity to display our cars. When I peruse our membership role, I am once again impressed by the variety of automobiles owned by our members and the rightful pride each has for those vehicles. I know we all look forward to the time when we are able to once again share our passions with each other and a viewing public. In addition to occasionally taking my cars “for a spin,” thus keeping the batteries charged and the tires round, I have been watching an inspirational show on Acorn TV- “Vintage Roads,” which is about two old friends driving a 1930’s Morgan 4/4 through the English countryside and mostly avoiding modern highways by travelling on routes from the “Golden Age of Motoring,” the 30’s. Each show typically features British antique cars against a backdrop of spectacular estates and vistas. It is an entertaining and uplifting program which, to me, is well worth the 45 minutes of viewing time. Let’s hope that we will soon be allowed to meet, and that we will feel comfortable doing so. In the meantime, stay healthy and in good spirits. Rudy

Note: there will be no Executive Board meeting and no general membership meeting in May. We will hope to start with a general membership meeting in September. For now, "Chef's Nights Out" will be held in abeyance as well.

Editor's Note

We have lots of material this month…thanks to contributors. We have an article about the “Cannonball”, an illegal event where the goal is to travel from New York to LA in the fastest time. There are also a few other items that are hopefully of interest. Also included are some photos of last year’s Concours d’ Elegance of America taken by George. We’ve kept the page showing some ideas you might want to try since we’re still being encouraged to stay home. Our events list remains “barren” although we’ve again included the status of national/international events. The History, Legislative, and Sunshine reports are included. Check out the full-page ad at the end for “The Hideout” Storage Condominiums, a new facility under construction which looks to be a great place to keep your car(s). Send future articles, comments, pictures, etc. to [email protected] Cut-off date for the Running Board is the last Thursday of each month. Take Care,

Ron From Facebook, Twitter, etc. “Now that we have everyone washing their hands correctly. Next week: Turn Signals!!!” “So tired of all the bad news. Brighten my day by posting a front and back picture of your credit card.” “Yesterday my husband thought he saw a cockroach in the kitchen. He sprayed everything down and cleaned thoroughly. Today I am putting the cockroach in the bathroom.”

History The Naples on the Gulf Chapter of AACA continued monthly meetings in 1975. Since they were having trouble getting members to attend the meetings, they decided that each person there should contribute $25 to the club. Half of the money would be a contribution to the club, the other half would be drawn at the next meeting by putting the names of those participating from the previous meeting into a hat. The next meeting, Bud Stoll won the “kitty” and they put in money to do this again. The group held a special meeting on March 9, 1975, because Sarasota was wanting to form their own region without the OK of their Royal Palm Region. The minutes do not say what action was taken, but they were in contact with Hershey about the matter. The group decided they needed to distribute a new roster of members. A newsletter would be distributed every three months. There were only 14 at this meeting.

Washington State In comments submitted to a rule proposed by the Washington State Patrol to update the state’s motor-vehicle equipment standards, SEMA opposed efforts to modify the regulations by lowering the maximum bumper height requirement for passenger vehicles from 22 inches to 20 inches. The association also opposed a change to the current regulations that would remove the 6-inch minimum height requirement for windshields and replace it with a vague, subjective standard.

SEMA contended that with regard to incompatible bumper heights, regulations more stringent than the current standard in Washington will not solve this difference among vehicles in the national vehicle fleet. Vehicles of vastly differing bumper heights—from sports cars to stock pickups, to tractor-trailers and school buses—come off the assembly lines each year.

The proposal also would require that windshields “be of sufficient dimensions to protect the driver and occupants from insects, other airborne objects, and highway surface water and debris, when the motor vehicle is moving forward, or as originally equipped by a recognized manufacturer.”

This proposed change removes an objective requirement that the vertical height of the windshield must be at least 6 inches and replaces it with language that relies on the subjective interpretation of the individual inspector or law enforcement authority, rendering the vehicle owner without clear direction as to lawful modification.

The Cannonball, NY to LA in Record Time For those not familiar, the Cannonball is where the competitor travels from a parking garage in Manhattan (NY) to a hotel in Redondo Beach (CA), the goal being to accomplish this in the least amount of time. The race is against the clock and not fellow drivers. This translates to ignoring traffic speed laws and making minimal stops. Google “recent Cannonball runs” and you will find several reports about a November 2019 record setting trip, which was then beaten by another team in early April. Attempts to drive coast to coast in record time have been going on since 1915 when a Stutz Bearcat made the trip in shortly over 217 hrs. Wikipedia lists 11 records, while the number of attempts is not known. The most recent run (April 4) took 26 hrs. and 38 minutes at an average speed of 106 mph, which beat the previous record set in November by 47 minutes. While most of us may debate the ethics of the event itself, among Cannonball aficionados, the discussion seems to be that the April 4 record setting run may deserve an “asterisk” since the COVID-19 shutdown drastically reduced traffic which is an important variable. The link below to the Road and Track website describes the November run in detail. The car used was a 2015 Mercedes E63 AMG with exhaust system and turbocharger upgrades. The team tried to make it look more like a generic sedan. They removed the Mercedes badging, taped over the carbon fiber trim, painted the red brake calipers silver, and disguised the taillights. It would cruise at 160mph or faster. The April run was in a 2019 Audi A8. It is not as well documented and the participants haven’t been publicly identified. However, those in the know are confident that they indeed set a record.

To avoid detection, besides the obvious radar detectors and laser jammers, Cannonballers may use gyro-stabilized binocular devices, night-vision cameras, and traffic light changers. They may at times employ aircraft and ground spotters. One trick is to install a switch to disable the car’s brake lights so as not to draw attention when it is necessary to slow down. One team admitted to procuring 2 sets of license plates (licensed the car twice). Cars often have extra fuel tanks installed, since refilling with fuel is the only reason to stop. The Audi A8 in the April run reportedly stopped three times for a cumulative 28 minutes. If you elect to employ a more conventional (and legal) approach on your next New York to LA road trip, per Google maps, expect it to take about 42 hrs. driving time as you travel the ~2800 mile distance. At 500 miles per day, and stopping to eat and sleep, that works out to be a 6 day trip. You’ll feel great when you arrive, knowing that you beat the 1916 record set in a Cadillac roadster by over a full day!

Items of Interest

Fuel Stabilizers and Ethanol Fuel Recall a few meetings ago that Keith talked about the impact of ethanol fuel on our cars. Peter sent in the following link to a video that also discusses this and in particular the influence of fuel stabilizers and its impact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvS_D4_lF5U Pontiac Advertisements The Hagerty website recently had an article showing some artwork from 1960’s Pontiac ads. This followed a similar article in 2019. Two uniquely talented artists, Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman were given the task of producing artwork for Pontiac’s “Wide Track” advertising campaign. Fitzpatrick drew the cars, Kaufman the backgrounds and people. Lots of really good pictures of Pontiacs of the 60’s and early 70’s in a variety of settings in the 2 links below. Some things to do…. Watch an old Silent Movie Watch the romantic comedy Seven Chances (1925). It is about a man (played by Buster Keaton) who must marry by 7pm on his 27th birthday in order to inherit $7M. The movie shows lots of cars from that era and is well done. The film has been restored and enhanced. Watch the black and white (non-colorized) version. The movie lasts about an hour. Look for Seven Chances on YouTube or Amazon (Prime Video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eKC-2Gq-Qg Put together a Jigsaw Puzzle The Prime Minister of Australia suggested that his residents get some puzzles during the quarantine. Apparently, they may be difficult to find now, both there and here. Try putting one together online for free. The site below includes 1096 car and bike puzzles, so you may find your car. They have 100-150 pieces and take about a half hour to do. https://thejigsawpuzzles.com Get out Your Crayons Peter sent in a few links that have cars that you can color. You can see different types of cars on the Hemmings links. The Ford website also has other activities to do. The Ford site says it’s for kids, but it’s ok for you to try it. Just post your completed picture on the refrigerator. https://corporate.ford.com/ford-for-kids-activity-book.html https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2020/04/20/break-out-the-crayons-and-colored-pencils-hemmings-has-classic-car-images-to-color-while-you-stay-at-home https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2020/04/27/this-really-is-as-relaxing-as-they-say-more-collector-car-images-for-you-and-your-kids-to-color-while-at-home
