Do Now – Title “Pollution Facts”True or False? Make the false statements correct.1. Stormwater runoff carries sediments, nutrients, and
bacteria into waterbodies.2. Excess fertilizing has no effect on aquatic plants and
animals.3. Dumping household hazardous waste down the
storm drain is acceptable.4. Soil erosion increases the turbidity of water.5. It is important to repair automobile gas or oil leaks
promptly.

Congratulations!
You just inherited a piece of waterfront property and a ton of money!
You are going to use your money to develop your land. You can farm or ranch; build resorts, homes, factories, or parks, plant forests, log (cut down trees), mine – whatever you like! Please focus on one type of development.

On your paper…
1. Draw how you will develop your land.2. Make sure you and your partner are in
agreement and can explain your development plan to the class. Include discussion of how you will use the water.
3. Select 1 school supply item you have with you (pencil, folder, planner… anything). This will serve as a symbol of your pollution.

Reflection
1. How did the students at the beginning feel? Middle? End?
2. Could the downstream students be affected by the actions of students upstream?
3. Can we easily return the items (pollution)? Explain why or why not.

Did you see any examples of runoff this weekend?

Runoff Flow

The main stream drains all of the land
areas in its watershed from the
divide (high point) to the mouth (low
point).

Best Management Practices
- Methods designed to reduce or eliminate non-point source (NPS) pollution problems.
Homework:1. Suggest BMPs you could do as the developer of
your waterfront property. (at least 5 sentences)2. Read “Runoff Review” – under class docs.3. BrainPOP – Water Pollution *Answers in
complete sentences!*
