When we decided to launch a children’s books imprint, we searched very hard for an animal, plant or object that would represent the best qualities of these books. Fortunately, while hunting under the fat

dictionaries and in the numerous nooks and crannies of our office, we came upon a wonderful Red Turtle. Red Turtle was smart, cute—and looked very good on book covers! So we decided to adopt it immediately.Red Turtle has agreed to have its picture appear on every children’s and young adult book Rupa publishes, because the titles will be as interesting, intelligent and good-looking as Red Turtle. From fiction to non-fiction, short story and poetry collections to quiz books and illustrated books, the Red Turtle imprint will publish for children from age eight upwards and going on to teenagers. Authors such as Ruskin Bond, Gulzar, Derek O’Brien, Paro Anand, Samit Basu, Subhadra Sen Gupta and Musharraf Ali Farooqi all loved Red Turtle too—and they are only some of the writers who are now Red Turtle’s friends.

Did you see him shoot a tiger?’ I asked.‘Oh, many times,’ said Mehmoud. ‘A tiger a week—that was nothing to Carpet-sahib!’

‘Did the tigers come to the house, or did you go looking for them?’

Thus starts Mehmoud’s stories about working as khansama, or cook, for the great shikari Jim Corbett. As deft with his stories as he is with koftas, lamb chops, pies and milkshakes, Mehmoud has a tall tale for every occasion. From wrestling with a cobra in his bed or being carried away into the river by a muggermuch to when a tiger came looking for the cook, these stories leave little Ruskin spellbound.

Join Mehmoud in the kitchen as he cooks up one delectable meal after another, and gobble down his delicious stories of man-eating tigers, incompetent maharajas, missing kitchen boys and haunted pillows, all brought vividly to life by Sunaina Coelho’s captivating illustrations.

On 24 October 2012, Rajat Gupta, former head of the world’s most respected management consultancy firm, Mckinsey & Co., was sentenced to two years in prison by a New York court for securities fraud and insider trading. Why did this happen?Based on extensive research, including transcripts of FBI-wiretap conversations, Fallen Angel is an insightful account of a remarkable man and the extraordinary events surrounding him: this is the real story of Rajat Gupta, an orphaned immigrant from India who managed to reach dizzying heights in the US corporate sector. Although the verdict is out, the mystery remains: several jury members were in tears after delivering the verdict, and nearly everyone who has known Gupta believes he is innocent—so what really happened? With its almost thriller-like cast of real-life characters, Fallen Angel is a page-turner that explores the complex layers of this human drama.

Songs are an integral part of Indian cinema and have helped film-makers complement and enhance their narratives in myriad ways for decades. And much of the responsibility for weaving the song into the fabric of the story lies with the lyricist. What are the thoughts that inspire the lyricist’s pen when he tries to express a situation or an emotion through a song? What are the advantages and constraints of writing poetry to music?Whether it is the tender ‘Ma’ from Taare Zameen Par, the inspirational ‘Khoon Chala’ from Rang De Basanti or the teasing ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ from Delhi 6, Prasoon Joshi’s songs have never failed to touch a chord with audiences. And, in this book, we present some of his best songs—in Devanagari and in English transliteration and translation—with each one selected and annotated by the master lyricist himself. With incisive commentary and candid observations on what went into the making of the songs, Sunshine Lanes is a must-have for not only those who admire Prasoon Joshi’s work but also anyone who has ever loved poetry and music and interpreted the world through someone else’s words.

‘Richly evocative and skilfully narrated, Ashim Choudhury’s first novel is a poignant tale told from the point of view of a young boy growing up in a military family... Sometimes lyrical and written with psychological insight, The Sergeant’s Son marks a promising debut.’—Shashi TharoorIn the late sixties, Sergeant Samar, a minor employee of the air force, his wife Basanti and their four sons move from small-town Barrackpore to Bombay. The four boys grow up in the rapidly changing, cosmopolitan city that is just beginning to recognize its aspirations. As much a story of a difficult childhood as a snapshot of India of the 1960s, The Sergeant’s Son is a must-read.

This book discusses the essence of Sikhism and, entwined with it, the history and lore of the people of Punjab. Through photographs and descriptions of many hitherto unseen relics of the Sikh heritage, bestowed by the Gurus upon the disciples, the authors place each artefact in its historical context, giving a broad perspective of Sikh culture.A profusely illustrated volume that welcomes the reader with unsurpassed clarity and sensitivity to the world of the Sikh heritage, the authors have used their thorough understanding of the Sikh ethos to familiarize and educate the readers about all that has been left behind by the Sikh Gurus.

This book attempts to tell the story of the country’s Anglo-Indians through those of some of the community’s most interesting and extraordinary men and women. In a series of essays written by a host of writers, the lives of these personalities are described lucidly, and with warmth and honesty. Each of these people stayed and worked in India, and with their determination, enthusiasm and joie de vivre, they have all been active participants in the progress of the country in countless ways. From Henry Derozio and Frank Anthony to Ruskin Bond and Diana Hayden, the book is about people who excelled in all walks of life—as leaders, politicians, police officers, actors, teachers, jockeys, sportsmen, engine drivers, writers, quizmasters and many more.

Anemia affects an estimated 400 million women across the world, most of whom don’t recognize its symptoms—shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, headaches and lapses of concentration—mistakenly attributing these to the stresses of modern life. Anemia can lead to infertility, premature delivery in pregnant women and, in severe cases, fainting and mental confusion in women of all ages.Caused by low levels of hemoglobin, anemia is both preventable and treatable. In Anemia in Women, Joan Gomez discusses the different types of anemia that can occur at various stages of life, as well as the prevention, treatment and self-help options available.

A book that should be read attentively by everyone with a stake in India’s future, this is both a deeply insightful account of the challenges facing the country today as well as a call to action.

Through his unparalleled ability to devise result-oriented military, political and administrative strategy, Chanakya (c. 270-380 BCE)—classical India’s greatest thinker and teacher—overthrew one king, crowned another and paved the way for the establishment of India’s first great empire. He was also the author of the Arthashashtra, arguably the world’s first comprehensive treatise on statecraft and governance. What would Chanakya do if confronted with the various crises that beset contemporary India? Celebrated writer and thinker Pavan K. Varma uses this as the starting point for Chanakya’s New Manifesto and draws up a practical and detailed plan, modelled on the Arthashashtra, to bring about reform and change in five key areas: governance, democracy, corruption, security and the building of an inclusive society. Whether it is

laying the foundation for an independent and effective Lokpal, or decriminalizing politics and successfully weeding out the corrupt, the solutions he proposes are substantive, well within the constitutional framework, and can make all the difference between intent and action.
