Rural PastEach month, local historian, Sarah Doig will be bringing us intriguing snippets of our local History

This Edition’s Feature is

Education, Education, Education

This article is the third in a series written by Sarah Doig, a family & local historian who lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Details of all the services Sarah offers are on her website www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk. Sarah would also welcome feedback on her articles as well as suggestions for future ones.

This month I have been delving into the archives of our village primary schools, most of which of course have long since closed. Apart from the wonderful brick and flint buildings which bear testament to local endeavours and enthusiasm to ensure that the younger generation were educated, the records that the school masters and mistresses created give us a fascinating insight into what life was like in rural East Anglia. The surviving logbooks, punishment books and admission registers provide absorbing details of the day-to-day life of the school. I dipped into entries from 1912 in the logbooks from three schools in the area - Rickinghall,

Pakenham and Norton - and found some interesting snippets.

I was struck by the extent to which, a century ago, the school played a key role in the life of the village. It was not only a place of education, but a venue for events put on by the wider community. For instance the Rickinghall logbook entry for 12th June 1912 reads “There was no school on Tuesday afternoon as the room was required for a concert”. And at Norton school just a week earlier, “The Suffolk Show is being held at Stowmarket & a half-holiday has been given by the Managers”..

Also, because many such National Schools were closely linked to the local church, it is common to find entries like this one on 25th July 1912 from the Pakenham logbook which reads “The Annual Choir Outing took place to-day - School closed”.

I also found the notes on the school curriculum of interest because, unlike today, this was decided by the local school staff and managers rather than at a national level. The Norton school logbook records in detail the scheme of work for 1912 which included: English literature (William Tell, King Arthur, Hereward the Wake, Robin Hood & Robinson Crusoe), Arithmetic, Geography (the meaning of map signs and preparation of maps of France, Spain, Portugal & Italy), History (stories of great men & great events) and Nature Knowledge. Singing was also on the curriculum and was “taken in the playground when weather & surface permit”.

Many of the entries in these school logbooks record attendance levels, which were affected much more than today by weather conditions - “On

Friday morning 60 children and on Friday afternoon 42 children were absent through wet weather”, the Rickinghall 25th November entry states. Many children had to walk several miles to and from school (twice a day because

they had to return home for lunch) from outlying hamlets and road/footpath conditions

were far worse than today. The rural economy also affected school attendance levels.

The 2nd August Rickinghall entry says “Harvest having begun on several farms the attendance this week has been low”. It is also interesting to note the amazing range of diseases and ailments which kept children off school in 1912. A list compiled from entries in all three schools reads: colds, chicken pox, mumps, measles, whooping cough, scabies, influenza, ringworm, eczema & impetigo. And one poor girl gets a special mention in the Rickinghall logbook entry of 7th July: “Susan Bailey a girl in the First Class was excluded from school as her head was verminous”!

ASPARAGUS SOUP

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil1 Onion, finely chopped400g/14oz Asparagus, finely chopped500ml/18fl oz hot chicken stock Sea Salt Freshly ground black pepper4 tbsp Double Cream1 stick of Celery, trimmed

and chopped1 leek, trimmed and chopped

Preparation method

1. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over a medium heat.

Add the onion and fry until softened.2. Add the Asparagus and cook for two minutes.3. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Season, with Sea Salt and freshly Ground Black Pepper, reduce the heat to simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the asparagus is thoroughly cooked.4. Add the cream and mix with a hand blender until

smooth.

2. Also, do I oil the steak or the pan?

Regards

Bob Shimmon

Hi Simon

I have a couple of questions for when I am cooking steaks:

1. I have read conflicting advice on seasoning before cooking. Should I include salt or does this dry out thepiece of meat?

Dear Bob,

The Great Debate!

1. Chefs disagree all the time, but rarely about as basic technique as the sprinkling of salt and pepper.

It is widely agreed that the Seasoning of the meat prior to cooking will dry out the meat. This is due to a process called osmosis that moves water from inside the cells to outside.

Albeit it is again agreed that although it does dry the meat out it does also enhance the flavour

2. I suggest you lightly coat the steak first with oil before youtoss it into the pan. Ensure you choose an oil with a high smoke point, By oiling the steak instead of the pan, you’re able to get the pan really hot for a nice good searing and the steak will not stick to the pan.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR LOCAL CHARITIESRural Ads likes to support local charitable groups and each month offers free space within the magazine for

various charities to advertise their events and keep us up to date about their work.

DRINKSTONE WAR MEMORIAL INSTITUTE -

New Village Hall

The annual Sale Trail is one of an ongoing series of events being organised by the Village Hall Committee in order to raise funds towards building a new Village Hall, after the previous hall was demolished following a serious fire.

We hope to be able to commence the building of our long-awaited New Hall in the very near future.

THE DRINKSTONE SALE TRAIL

Households around the village (IP30 9SX) will open up their garages from 10am until 3pm to sell their wares, whilst others will be selling their bargains from a table-top in All Saints Church.

Indoor stalls include a refreshments stall selling mouth-watering home-made cakes, a provisions stall selling home-made cakes/honey/preserves,etc. and a wide variety of traditional bric a brac stalls.

Toilet facilities (including Disabled facilities) are available in the Church.

Admission is free - a small charge is made for the maps of the village showing garage sale venues. Registered Charity No: 304876
