Free initial consultation to discuss any tax, accounting and general business issues.
Local support, contactable 7 days per week. Personable and professional advice tailored to your individual needs.
Fees agreed in advance
When asked late last year by Meia to advertise in Rural Ads I was please to do so. Obviously in part to secure new clients, but also to support a new local business.I am a fully qualified accountant and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, also holding a Master’s in Business Administration from Henley Management College. I have enjoyed over 20 years’ experience in senior financialroles within manufacturing and service businesses of varying sizes and industries. March Consulting was established 8 years ago, to provide financial consulting services to SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) , ensuring that their business financial planning optimised their cash flow and minimised cost and taxation obligations.March Accounting & Taxation Services was created to provide a comprehensive solution for
all accounting and taxation needs including bookkeeping, self-assessments, v.a.t., payroll, statutory accounts and any taxation regulatory requirements. We operate a business model which delivers a local, professional, cost effective and client focussed service for individuals, self employed and SMEs. All fees are agreed in advance for specific pieces of work performed on either an ad hoc or regular recurring basis, all by appropriately qualified staff. Work is invoiced on completion helping clients cash flow. The March Accounting and Taxation Services model is based on :1) Low overheads with fixed fees agreed in advance2) Core staff capacity flexed as client demand requires3) Experienced, fully qualified staff to address various business needs as required.
We continue to help a wide range of clients from individuals (e.g. retirees, those with multiple incomes) self employed (e.g. plumbers, electricians, contractors, publicans) and limited companies (e.g. management accounts, cash flow forecasting, statutory accounts, corporation tax). With H.M. Revenue & Customs continually seeking to increase their ‘tax take’ and impose fines and penalties for non compliance all new and
existing tax payers should keep their current accounting and tax arrangements under review. Please call or email for a free no obligation consultation whether it is to help improve the profitability of your business, cost effectively optimise your tax position or to meet your regulatory obligations. Please remember : Turnover is Vanity, Profit is Sanity and Cash Flow is Reality!
Good luck!

Rural PastEach month, local historian, Sarah Doig will be bringing us intriguing snippets of our local History
This Edition’s Feature is
Hope for the AfflictedLast month I explored newspaper reports in The Bury and Norwich Post reporting on our rural predecessors’ lives, loves and deaths in Norfolk and Suffolk in the 1800s. Reading these old newspapers, I was also intrigued by the regular page of advertisements which seemed, surprisingly, to contain the same wide variety of products we see today in our classified ads. And they also appear to range from the sublime - an educated, single lady offering private tuition to girls - to the ridiculous. So on the latter,
I have extracted a few of my favourites on the theme of health. My first offering appeared in October 1866 under the rather curious title of “Hope for the Afflicted” and advertises the services of Edward M Smith MD, practitioner of botanical medicine. In the advert he claims “Scrofula or King’s Evil [a kind of tuberculosis of the neck, supposedly cured by the touch of a king], Glandular Swellings, Abscesses, Cancers, Tumours, Scurvy, Leprosy, and all Affections of the Skin, with all External Diseases, successfully treated and cured...” Of course, we know
now that some of the more serious diseases mentioned here could not possibly have been cured by this 19th century attempt at herbal medicine. But Dr Smith certainly seems to have been successful in plying his trade, as he proudly announces that he has moved from Providence Place, Diss to a new residence in Norwich. He also lists a number of days on which he can be consulted in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Colchester, Kings Lynn, Cambridge and even London.
An advert in 1892 headed “Influenza! Influenza!” naturally caught my eye. Especially since the cures were “St Edmunds Sloe Gin” and “Cinnamon Cordial” offered by F E Jennings, Maker of Cordials & Liqueurs of Bury St Edmunds. Jennings appears to be cashing in on the latest claim, detailed in his advertisement, that drinking beverages with cinnamon in them - or even just smelling the spice - destroys the ‘flu germs. His cordial was retailing at 30 shillings per dozen bottles (size
unknown...). Jennings’ gin wasmore expensive at 36 shillings per dozen bottles. However, I might have been tempted even at that price as “This Famous Liqueur will this season contain an extra infusion of Cinnamon Spice”. It seems to me a rather enjoyable way to try to fight off the dreaded ‘flu.
Finally, I just had to include this illustration from a lengthy advertisement for “Bradley’s Prize Medal Artificial Teeth” which appeared in 1898. Mr Bradley, based in Wisbech, announces that he will visit Bury St Edmunds every Wednesday and will be available for free consultations at No 5, Angel Hill. As well as claiming that his dentures ”...have a world-wide renown for their Lightness, Durability and Natural Appearance”, Bradley also states that he has developed an entirely new, painless system of adapting artificial teeth, adding that it is based on the American Principle (whatever that was). In fact, if anyone was curious enough to know more about this revolutionary system, then Mr Bradley offers an “Illustrated treatise on teeth” free of charge upon application. I wonder how many people actually invested in a complete set of false teeth which cost £1/1/0d, equivalent to about £80 today?
This article is the second in a series written by Sarah Doig, a family & local historian who lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Details of all the services Sarah offers are on her website www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk. Sarah would also welcome feedback on her articles as well as suggestions for future ones.

Chef’s Corner
Dear Chef
I have two unrelated questions for you:-
1. I read somewhere that slicing meat into thin strips is easier if you partially freeze it first. Is this recommended or even safe?I am always mindful of freezing / thawing / re-freezingissues
2. Does a roast on the bone cook faster than a boneless roast and, if so, why?
Best Wishes, Neil Sandry
Dear Neil,
1. “I wouldn’t recommend it” it’s not safe practice as freezing the meat down does not destroy all of the bacteria and also breaks down the cell walls of the meat, rendering it less nutritious than fresh meat. For further information please see the governments web site “Safer Food Better Business” it’s a very good comprehensive guide.
2. Yes, a bone in a piece of meat will cook quicker than boneless, as the bone will conduct the heat better.
Kind regards, Simon

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR LOCAL CHARITIESRural Ads is very keen to support local charitable groups and each month offers free space within the
magazine for various charities to advertise their events and keep us up to date about their work.
Established in 1989, The Befriending Scheme works to create and support friendships between vulnerable adults and other members of the community. This is done through linked 1:1 friendships and their Hub (drop-in centres). Hubs are based in Stowmarket, Sudbury, Ipswich, Bury St. Edmunds, Haverhill, Lowestoft and Felixstowe, and offer a place where people can come and relax, talk and take part in a range of interesting activities, craft and hobbies. Volunteers come from all walks of life, including retired people, mums with children
at school and young people looking for work experience.Rachael Catchpole, Volunteer with the Stowmarket Scheme says “I like being able to do the activities and seeing the enjoyment it brings to others…it gives me huge satisfaction”
In addition to the Hub volunteering opportunities, The Befriending Scheme recruits, trains and supports volunteers to become one to one befrienders. In return for their time The Befriending Scheme offer volunteers full training, travel and out of pocket expenses, work experience,
and the chance to change the life of a vulnerable person.
The one to one friendship links enable vulnerable people to access opportunities for leisure and travel activities, meet other people, develop skills and more independent lifestyles, and become more active and valued members of the community.
Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering opportunities can contact Gail at The Befriending Scheme on 01787 371333 or email [email protected]
