Turnover is Vanity, Profit is Sanity and Cash Flow is Reality

Turnover (so named as it encapsulated the notion of turning over stock through sale and replenishment) or more generally referred to as sales, is usually how most SMEs will express their financial goals. That is to achieve some form of market share or as a pure sales goal e.g.£1m in sales in 3 years time. Whilst this is a key financial measurement it cannot be pursued in isolation. ‘Winning new business’, whilst it gives a sense of pride and achievement, quite rightly, does not necessarily mean future long term success

for the business.

New business has got to be profitable in the short term and cash generative in the longer term to be worthwhile. These generic timeframes vary according to the financial stability of the business itself and it’s current financing facilities. Investment may be required to service a new customer, as indeed, any significant increase in business levels. New machines, stock, labour and even premises may be required.

Planning needs to take place to ensure, although volumes cannot be accurately predicted for the future, a couple of reasonable scenarios can be derived and from these assess both the level of investment required but also the profitability, and more importantly, cash flow implications of such scenarios. Otherwise ‘over trading’ may become a real concern.

This is the term used to describe the scenario where a business is growing, in sales terms, faster than it’s ability to fund it’s growth resulting in the inability to meet it’s liabilities as they fall due.

While revenue (sales/turnover) growth is important it must be a means of increasing profitability and generating cash otherwise it places a strain on the business with no resultant reward for any of it’s key stakeholders.

This Edition’s Feature is

Rural Economy Under Threat

This article is the sixth in a series written by Sarah Doig, a family & local historian who lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.

Details of all the services Sarah offers are on her website www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk. Sarah would also welcome feedback on her articles as well as suggestions for future ones.

The issue of the rural economy under threat seems to be a perennial problem. East Anglia has been buffeted by a series of agricultural “storms” over the centuries and a dip into the archives has revealed some interesting local stories. Whilst the invention of the threshing machine over 200 years ago provided opportunities for our region’s manufacturers, from the farm labourer’s viewpoint it threatened their livelihood as well as their whole way of life. And these labourers lacked the crucial knowledge and skills to operate such advanced machinery.

“The Bury and Norwich Post” for 27th November 1811 reports: “There has not been any recent invention by which human calamity has been produced as by the new implement called the threshing machine and this in greater measure arises from unskillfulness of those employed to work it...We notice that Mr Arthur Brooks of Horringer had a very narrow escape within the last few days as the whole of his clothes, even his shirt was torn from his back and had not his men stopped the machine with such promptitude there would have been loss of limbs and probably his life”. Many, however, were not so lucky and the local newspapers are littered with brief reports of maiming and accidental death of labourers, some caused by mixing alcohol with machines. Of course, in summer it was customary for farmers to supply their labourers with beer, the only safe, cool drink available. Each man

would consume an average of six pints a day in very hot weather. Again in Horringer, in 1837: “Inquest...on Alfred Last, while superintending the work of a threshing machine became later in the afternoon intoxicated, his foot placed incautiously among the wheels of the machine and received sever fractures of the leg”.

The introduction of the threshing machine had been the last straw for farmhands, on top of poor living conditions, low wages, a series of poor harvests and a severe winter. In 1830 and 1831, many labourers in Suffolk and Norfolk took part in the notorious Swing Riots, aimed at improving conditions by force, wrecking farm machinery and destroying agricultural buildings. However, such organised violence was witnessed much earlier as in this report in “The Bury and Norwich Post” from 20th March 1822: “On Monday morning several hundred labourers assembled at Laxfield for the purpose of breaking threshing machines. They proceeded to Mr Greenward’s at Cratfield and destroyed his machine and then on to Mr Faltman’s at Laxfield who informed them that he did not intend to use his machine anymore, they then went to Mr Garrad’s, James Read’s, Mr Julian’s, Mr Wilkinson’s and Mr Spalding’s and shivered their machines into 100’s of pieces”.

Such actions did not, of course, escape punishment. Those caught and convicted were often sentences to transportation to Australia. In December 1830 at the Borough Sessions at Bury, the Recorder stated that he wished it to be known that “the bodies of people assembled for reduction of rents and tithes is punishable by death also that for destroying threshing machines the penalty is 7 years transportation”. By the beginning of 1831, instead of the improved working conditions they had hoped for, many families found themselves worse off with the breadwinner confined to prison or

worse, sitting on board a hulk awaiting transportation.

The Berberis belongs to a large family that consists of many very useful garden shrubs. Their virtues are many. They are easy to cultivate, tolerating almost any type of soil. Some are suitable for growing in shade, while others prefer to bask in the sun. There are dwarf types reaching no more than 45cms (18ins) in height and spread, while others grow very large, easily reaching 3 metres (13 feet) if grown in a sunny position.

However, the size of these larger forms of Berberis can easily be controlled by annual prunin if desired. The flowers vary from pale yellow to orange and appear mainly in Spring. Many have brilliant autumn foliage colours followed by showy fruits, whilst others are evergreen or semi-evergreen. Don’t be put off by their spiny branches! They can make an excellent and secure hedge or barrier, and are equally useful as specimens in the shrub or perennial border.

Spoilt for Choice!

If it is ground cover you are looking for, then there are many Berberis that are very suitable. Berberis ‘Amstelveen’ is a vigorous, spreading plant, reaching 1 metre (3 feet) in height and 1.5 metres (5 feet) in spread. This dark green, glossy foliage has some attractive Autumn colour when some of the old leaves are discarded. This plant is suitable for growing in sun or shade.

Purple Foliage Types

So often a garden is lost in a sea of green! Shrubs with purple foliage break up this monotony. For the front of the border Berberis Thunbergii atropurpurea would be the ideal choice, as it reaches no more than 50cms (20 ins) inheight and spread. It can look very effective when planted in groups of three to form a small triangle.

The leaves which are red/purple in Summer become an intense orange/red in Autumn.

Small, cup-shaped, creamy, pink-tinged flowers are borne in Spring, followed by red fruits.

Where space permits, Berberis ottawensis ‘Superba’ is an excellent purple-foliaged form to choose.

In Spring, red-tinged, golden-yellow flowers contrast well with the deep, reddish-purple leaves.

Attractive clusters of egg-shaped, red fruits are displayed amongst the extremely good orange-red foliage in Autumn. Another purple-leaved form isBerberis ‘Rose Glow’, whose foliage turns variegated pinkand white.

PRICKLY BUT BEAUTIFUL

Plant of the MonthDoes your garden have poor soil, or do you have difficulty in growing plants well? Then here’s a plant that you could almost put in upside-down and it still would succeed. Kerria japonica is an attractive shrub whose arching branches are wreathed in Spring with rich yellow flowers, like double buttercups. Its green stems are most effective in Winter. It is very useful for growing in areas Berberis wilsoniae was discovered in China by the plant collector, Earnest Wilson, who dedicated the plant to his wife. The green foliage turns an orangey salmon colour before falling in the Autumn.

Look out for useful tips and advice for your garden in next month’s edition.

Article written by Ray Webber

Superb Berries

Berberis wilsoniae was discovered in China by the plant collector, Earnest Wilson, who dedicated the plant to his wife. The greenfoliage turns an orangey salmon colour before falling in the Autumn. The berries are then revealed, - masses of showy, translucent coral fruits borne in clusters. Height is approximately 1.2 metres (4 feet) with a 2 metre (6 foot) spread. Plant in any type of soil in sun or part shade.

After a four hour drive from a hot 95 degree Phoenix, with snow forecast for the following day we made the most of our first few hours and took advantage of the free shuttle bus that allows you to hop on and off at the many vantage points.

The next day dawned bright but by late morning the weather closed in and, as forecast, the snow arrived and the temperature fell to 0 degrees!

Fancy a seaside break along the beautiful north Norfolk coast? Then look no further than La Mer, Scratby.

One of the USA’s most definitive landscapes and seen countless Western movies, nothing could beat our sunset horse ride led by Patrick, a native Navajo.

With just the three of us we were treated to a truly wonderful experience riding a deserted trail in the valley with sightings of a desert fox and eagles. The only thing missing was John Wayne riding by, although my husband swears he saw him in the distance!

This lake took 17 years to fill and is dotted with side canyons and wonderful scenery. A boat trip is a must here as is a visit to the Glen Canyon Dam where guided

Property FOR SALEFOR SALE

With the housing market always a hot topic of conversation, check out this month's column will give you the knowledge and tricks of the trade used when buying your home.

To Buy or to Rent?

For Sale £240,000 (visit www.aprilhomes.co.uk for more information)

In these difficult economic climes, in the property market the question arises: Should I buy or should I rent? To some the attraction of owning a home of one’s own is paramount. However, many factors some personal and many external may influence that decision.

The housing market is stagnant – house prices are roughly the same as they were in 2004. So it’s a buyers market. Despite this, obtaining the necessary mortgage can be particularly difficult unless one is handsomely reinforced with a substantial deposit and has

clear means to support the loan.

Gone are the halcyon days of one hundred percent financing where deposits were not an issue! Buying a property may also contribute to uncertainty in formative personal relationships and the legal complications arising from any break-up may have an adverse effect on any future mortgage applications as well as raising stress levels. Simpler to rent, then?

The lack of mortgage availability has, therefore, raised the demand for rented property massively. Hence, the novel situation whereby

rental sums may exceed possible mortgage repayment amounts.

Renting a property may seem to be ‘money down the drain’. Not necessarily so in that the burden of maintenance costs are absent and the ‘peace of mind’ gained may be a benefit. You will be able to assess more accurately your dispersements

so that when you eventually decide to purchase you should be able to cope readily with a mortgage.

For Sale £210,000

HOME SERVICES

Benefits of Live-In CareThere may be certain points in our lives where we need care. We need the support of somebody to carry on living our life. The usual assumption is made that when someone’s care needs reach a certain, critical point, the only course of action is to move into a residential home. But, as increasing numbers of people discover, this is not the case. A much more personal and less disruptive solution is available. A live-in home carer provides all the care needs, whilst enabling you to remain active and independent in your own home.

The emotional importance of staying in your own home cannot be underestimated. It not only the place with which you are most familiar, but it is the setting of your life, stored with memories and treasured belongings that you do not want to give up. Live-in care works around and with you in your home, so that you can stay independent with the lifestyle and routines that you are used to. This in itself can be beneficial to people living with dementia, for example, who can gain from this continuity.

Special Feature

Living with your carer will give them athorough knowledge and understanding of you, so they can provide just the right kind of support, where it is needed and how you want it. Being in your own home, you are in complete control as to how you want your care delivered. Your rules and requirements are the first priority, rather than the regulations of the care home.

With the support of your carer, you can stay active and involved in your local community and concentrate on family and friends, with all the benefits to health and well-being this brings. Relieving you of day-to-day chores allows you to focus your energies on the more

important things in life, pursuing activities and interests you enjoy. A live-in carer also offers companionship and the security of someone living with you. But, they can also equally ensure the support to keep you and your loved one together.

A live-in carer from Purely Care offers a complete package that means it can be more holistic in its approach, giving you continuity of care and having someone who is available to nip any emerging problems in the bud. Unlike some agencies who only introduce carers, Purely Care employ their carers, freeing you from the burden of having to organise this yourself and guaranteeing that there is back up support and replacements for

holidays and sickness.

Taking the all-inclusive route can also be prudent financially. Purely Care offer a flat weekly rate, which offers a significant saving compared to organising hourly care. This allows you to relax in the knowledge that there are not any time constraints on fulfilling your requirements. Often, one carer can provide support for a couple, who both have care requirements, thus saving the need for two places in a home. Purely Care can often cover both people in one package, giving you a considerable saving.

The costs of live-in care can be covered either privately or, depending on circumstances, through local authority or NHS funding. To plan ahead for your care needs, the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA), a not-for-profit organisation, links people needing care funding advice with specialist independent financial advisers, who have achieved the Later Life Adviser Accreditation.

Live-in care allows you to stay in your home and maintain your own lifestyle, whilst accessing all the personal support you need. For more information on how Purely Care can help with your care needs, please call us on 01603 407707 or visit our website at www.purelycare.co.uk.

How to Access the Hidden Job Market

Article written by Giles O’Halloran - HR Professional

When looking for that all important next job, it is often frustrating to find that some of the best jobs seem to have vanished before you even get a chance to apply. Even though the jobs may appear online, in the press or in specialist trade media, we often find that the job has already gone and sometimes was only advertised to satisfy a regulatory requirement.

So … how do you steal a chance ahead of the opposition in order to find those hidden jobs …?

This article hopes to provide a few pointers to help you do so.

Finding out:

It’s a realistic notion to say that if a job is advertised, it has already been live for a certain period of time. It is also likely that candidates have applied or even been through a selection process. So how do you find out about opportunities before they come live?

There are a number of options available covered in this article and these all involve engaging people and the relationships you have with them. The first port of call is family and close friends. Talk to them honestly about the kind of work you are looking for and not only can they keep an eye out for you, but they can inform people they know to do the same. The power of many keeping an eye out for you and keeping an ear to the ground beats just one person trying to cover every option. So don’t be scared to speak to friends and family, to build relationships with acquaintances, or to developyour online social media profiles, because the opportunities are out there

and as the new phrase goes, it is no longer word of mouth, it is world of mouth.

The Network:

Your network is often the most powerful tool you have, but it is how you manage it that makes it effective. Family and close friends start the ball rolling, but professional colleagues, academic alumni, regimental comrades etc. are all key access points to opportunities that often remain hidden. It is a common fact now that circa 60% of all vacancies are filled by candidates that are not friends, but the friends of friends – the acquaintance and the friend of a friend of a friend can therefore be a very important ally in the hunt for that hidden opportunity. In the same light, some more sensitive industries often heavily rely not only on trusted networks but also through sourcing candidates using low key methods. This often means that key posts are rarely advertised, but the network is used to source effectively. Why? Simple, you get a known quantity as well as someone that can be trusted in often demanding situations. So don’t be scared to put the word out, build networks through friends, but always ensure information and help is shared. coming up before you or even employees in the company do.

Managing Recruitment Specialists:

Adverts for roles are often released shortly after or at the same time as recruitment specialists are engaged or briefed. You must remember that a good recruiter maintains an active database and network of clients and candidates in

and ensuringpeople understand what you are lookingfor. It doesn’t hurt to take time to talk throughthings with people in your network, perhapsprepare a brief summary of the kind of thing that interests you, or to forward a prepared message through the network, but it is really important to map your network effectively to ensure it delivers what you need.

When I say this, I mean establish how best to connect and send the message to people that can act as a catalyst or make things happen. It is not just about crafting an effective message that is then just sent in ripples along the network, as many may just see this as another type of spam or unsolicited message. The real value in communication comes from establishing who needs to know, when and how best to do so. It is therefore imperative that you take time to consider key people in your network, who can help you best, who has access to others than can help and what is the best way to inform them. By taking a little time to think about this and planning the message only makes it more powerful and

effective. So, take a little time to read and consider the points above …I sincerely hope they prove to be of use to you.

order to succeed. So, it is worth investing time in building productive relationships with them, share information and thoughts so that not only do they understand more about the kind of opportunity you are looking for, but that they also think of you when they start to hear about jobs on the horizon. They often have very informed and effective networks that will hear about jobs coming up before you or even employees

in the company do.

It is not just about building relationships with traditional recruitment consultants or search specialists. With the power of professional social media, you can now effectively identify and approach the internal recruitment specialists of companies that interest you. Through connecting with them, not only does it give you a chance to hear about jobs before they are advertised externally, they are also likely to maintain a large network, often with individuals in similar organisations. You can therefore leverage their networks and knowledge to help even more in your search for the next opportunity, if of course you manage them effectively.

Putting the word out:

It is not just about having the connections and a list of names to go to, it is very much about how you manage communication
