Hi Everyone,
I do hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year.
I do apologise if you don’t receive your copy of Rural Roundup on time this month. Yet again I have had issues with BT. Two weeks off line and no telephone, at least they refunded me for the telephone line charge for the period. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will not happen again. New Play Area for Kingsdown Recreation Ground! Plans from Friends of Kingsdown Play Park (FKPP) for the first phase of a new and exciting play area were reviewed and agreed by Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council in November 2016.
This new play area has come about because of the enthusiasm and hard work of FKPP over the past 18 months. They have acquired sufficient funds by local fund raising of a May Day Event, quiz nights, Autumn Scarecrow Trail within the village, raffles, barrels of booze at Kingsdown Rocks, to mention only a few!! In addition they have applied for and been successful with several awards and grants, which include the Lottery, and other local and national organisations and businesses. Well done FKPP!!
On Tuesday 20th December the order was signed with Eibe (play equipment manufacturer) for a new play area consisting of Toddler climb-ing frame with slide, Stand-Up see-saw, two spring rockers, Toddler swings, Flat swings, two interactive play panels, a Rope Tree Stork’s Nest climbing frame, two benches and two picnic ta-bles, all with new surfacing. The installation of the new play area and equipment will take place in the spring of 2017. Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council congratulate FKPP for all their efforts in providing
a new play area; the parish council fully supports the project and will contribute up to 10K towards the total project costs. Fundraising continues for the second phase of the project which may include the purchase and installation of a zip wire, large climbing frame with slide for older children, a satellite carousel, and further surfacing, fencing and gates.

Thanks to everybody in Kingsdown who gave so generously to the carol singers. We raised £1947.80 this year. All the money has been given to Kingsdown Church Fabric Fund and The Mission to Seafarers. Our thanks to everyone who came out and joined in the carol singing. We hope you enjoyed it and will come again next year. Further Improvements to Kingsdown Village Hall St John’s (Kingsdown) Village Hall is a beautiful period building which dates back to 1843 and the trustees are keen to ensure that up to date facilities and amenities are provided. A grant of £4,188
has been gratefully received from the Big Lottery Fund to install secondary dou-ble glazing to all five windows in the upper hall and for redecoration. The secondary double glazing was installed just before Christmas by a local company, Dover Glass Centre, and took just one day. The redecoration work is scheduled for February. Thanks to the grant, which was extremely well received,
the Village Hall has a warmer and cosier environment for all our users, as well as a reduction in utility costs. The hall is very popular, and is hired by villagers and non-residents. A variety of clubs and organisations
such as the Table Tennis Club, Dancing Lessons, Singing Club and Yoga, hire the hall for meetings and not forgeting private functions and the regular bookings received from the Pre-School. In addition to all the structural changes that have taken place it is a pleasure to announce that as from January 2017 the hall now has a free Wi-Fi service which improves and enhances the hire facilities. Happy New Year! Our Autumn Social, held in the Village Hall, was very enjoyable. We were entertained by music from Les Trois Amis and, amusingly, it was the newcomers to the village who won the Kingsdown Heritage Quiz, knowing more about our village already than those who have lived here for years (Heritage maps still available from Del’s £1). In November David Carey from the Kent Tree and Pond Partnership enthused about the special trees we have in our village. Did you know that Field Maples, which are abundant in Kingsdown Wood, are incredibly rare and that we are internationally famous for the prostrate English oak growing out of the shingle? Our next talk will be ‘Bird Travels - The Mystery of Migration’ by John Buckingham on February 7th. Those who enjoyed his talk on ‘Wildlife through the Seasons’ last year will confirm that John is an entertaining speaker who takes stunning photographs. Starts at 7:30 at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School. £3 members, £4 non-members. On March 14th you can hear about the ‘Secret life of Kent Seaweeds’. Following the introductory talk on a ‘Sustainable Future for Kingsdown’ we have been planning and talking to a member of the Parish Council about our next steps towards really making a difference to our environmental sustainability. In the meantime make a note of April 25th when the talk will be ‘Recycle our Past, Save our Future.’ And finally we are seeking people to join our committee. We meet just once a month. Well, here we are in 2017 and a very happy New Year to all our readers. I hope you are all well and looking forward to a new gardening year. Perhaps you have a major gardening project planned or, like me, are aware that you have some vital maintenance work on the trellis or fencing to carry out as
a result of gale force winds encountered a few weeks ago. My excuse is that I ’m waiting for the right moment to spring into action; more thought will be applied to the problem. On the bright side, this month we should see some signs of approaching spring and the daylight hours will increase. Here are some of the jobs you could be doing this month: 1. Chit potato tubers. 2. Prune winter flowering shrubs that have finished. 3. Prune Wisteria. 4. If the weather is warm you may need to mow the lawn. Set the cutting height at its maximum and only mow when the grass is dry. On Monday 27th February Mark Brent the Head Gardener of Walmer Castle, will be coming along to chat to us. See you soon. Bob Perry

We have now cleared away all our festive decorations and nativities, pantos and carols are a distant memory. Some of our planned highlights for 2017 include a trip to see Matilda in London, the Year 3 and 4 production “What A Knight” and the Key Stage 2 business project. A range of sporting fixtures are in the diary and the Kingsdown Dance Group are busy practising as they aim to return to the National Finals of the school’s competition in June. I will let you know how we get on.

It’s Back! The school has finally managed to replace the rag bank at the front of the school. The ‘Recycle with Michael’ scheme is run by the Salvation Army. Any items of clothing, footwear, bags, belts, towels or bed linen can be placed in the bank. Please make sure that shoes are paired up and that all items are placed in bags that are tied up. This helps with the emptying of the bank. The collected items are resold, either through Salvation Army retail shops or exported overseas for sale in parts of the world where affordable UK clothing is sought after. Through the bank, money will be raised for both the Salvation Army and the school. The use of the bank also means that items are reused instead of going to landfill. Our previous rag bank raised over a thousand pounds over the years, providing funds for environmental activities, such as the egg incubator, visits from agencies including Kent Wildlife Trust and an indoor planetarium show. Recycling for batteries and ink cartridges is also provided by the school. The batteries are collected by Valpak on behalf of Kent County Council and money is raised for Save the Children charity with the ink cartridges. Environmental activities and projects continue to run throughout the school. A walk to school scheme encourages children to have at least a five minute walk on their journey in the morning. In March the school will be holding another ‘Switch Off Friday’ to coincide with the WWF Earth Hour. We are also hoping to look at ways to reduce waste around the school. The children remain enthusiastic and continue to come up with new ideas on becoming more environmentally responsible as a school. Long may it continue!

Highlights of the Parish Council meeting
held on Monday 12th December 2016.
Administration – The Council agreed the agenda protocol and addendum to Standing Orders, and Parish Clerk’s working hours and core contact time.
Finance – payment schedule approved. Finance Committee will produce draft 17/ 18 Budget for review by full Council.
Highways – review of 20 mph signage throughout Kingsdown will be under-taken by council.
Environment and Amenities – It was agreed Mrs Val Trewartha will be offered the position of Voluntary Parish Tree Warden.
Communications – works is progressing with EiS on the migration of the Council website. The site had been published without consent of the council.
Highlights of the meetings held on Monday 9th January 2017.
Administration – DCC have confirmed an election date of Thursday 9th February for a parish councillor position. The deadline for nominations was Fri-day 13th January. The co-option process for two further councillor positions will commence after the 13th January deadline. Generation of Minutes protocol approved and approved addendum will be included in Standing Orders.
Footpaths – Tender specification document approved and three further foot-paths have been added to the schedule. Tender process will now commence.
Finance – payment schedule approved. Draft Budget for 17 -18 was presented and will be reviewed by full council meeting at a January meeting. .
Planning – a meeting is scheduled in January with East Kent Public Rights of Way to determine a definition of footpaths in the Kingsdown Beach area.
Environment and Amenities – Cllrs Gleave and Bucknell are to be trained and added to the councillor voluntary rota for play area inspections which are currently under review.
Friends of Kingsdown Play Area (FKPP) – An order was signed by the Parish Council on 20th December for the procurement of play equipment and spring installation of Phase One of the project. Due diligence was carried out prior to the order being signed and FKPP transferred funds to the Council to support the order.
The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 13th February 2017 at Kingsdown Village Hall commencing at 7.00 pm. All residents are very welcome. Draft Minutes will be published on the Ringwould and Kingsdown website after full council approval the month following. Film club aims to record life of our communities A local camcorder club is opening its doors to new members and a new direction following the success of a special showing of the film club members made about the replacing of the groynes on Kingsdown beach. The film, made by Derek Hough, Steve Hutchings and David Bucknell, was shown to a packed meeting of the Kingsdown Conservation Society and was warmly applauded by the members. Some have asked for copies of the film. Now the Deal Camcorder club has filmed the making of the 3,500 poppies which were used to decorate St John’s Church at Kingsdown for the 2016 Remembrance Service. Two Kingsdown residents, Derek Hough and David Bucknell filmed the making of the poppies and the actual service. Steve Hutchings, who is editing the film, provided additional footage. The poppies, including 500 hand-painted seashells, were made by local craft groups, WI members and others. Some were knitted, some made of paper and card by local schoolchildren and some were sent from Germany. Filming included the poppies being made, interviews with some of those who made them and with Mrs Masheeda Downing who thought up the idea. Her son, Squadron Leader Anthony Downing, was killed on active service in Afghanistan. The team from the Camcorder Club are now putting together their film about this unique community activity which resulted in the church being transformed for what many have said was an extremely touching and memorable Remembrance Service, which was also the last service conducted by the Rev Cathy Sigrist. Anyone with a suggestion of a community activity which could be the subject of one of their films - or anyone who would like to join the club – is invited to contact Club Secretary Harry Loan on 01304 321 430 or Chairman David Bucknell at 01304 373 880 or email:- [email protected]. Arrangements will be made to show the film to all involved. New members will be able to
attend a series of workshops to develop

Some Points Covered at Ripple Parish Council Meeting held December 8th 2016
KCC reply to enquiry about traffic calming re Whitfield Urban Expansion (Parish Council expressed concern over possible slip road leading from new housing estate encouraging traffic to use Ripple as a short cut to Deal). Reply from DDC in which they stated; ‘That although they understand our concerns about residents of the new development using the route through Ripple to travel between Whitfield and Deal, the traffic modelling carried out for the developments permitted so far did not suggest a material increase in traffic on this route. Consequently, there are no current plans for any traffic calming measures. With regard to the Whitfield Urban Expansion, the approved proposals do not allow any vehicular access/egress to/from Archers Court Road for residents of the site and this should discourage use of a route through Ripple’ Network Rail Reply on repair to railway bridge (Parish Council enquired why the bridge repair was not restored with brick in keeping with the rest of the bridge) Reply from Network Rail in which they state; ‘No further works are planned for the bridge. ‘Following the lorry strike that knocked out the parapet girder, all necessary works took place in the immediate aftermath following the accident. The decision to use steel instead of brick was needed to re-open the line as soon as possible.’ Budget & Precept;- The budget for 2017/18 was discussed together with the precept. There has been a reduction of the grant from Dover District Council this year which was expected. However, as the Council have no big spend planned from the budget it was proposed & agreed the precept remain the same with no percentage increase. Speedwatch Group:- Following a site meeting in the village with Alan Watson from Kent Police Speeedwatch, three sites in the village were identified as being suitable for speedwatch set up. Notes from the meetings of Sutton by Dover Parish Council held on 6th December 2016 and 3rd January 2017 at Studdal Church Hall
Vfast:- Several residents in the parish expressed their concerns about the number of outages in service the local area has been experiencing. John Foche Charity:- At the December meeting, the Parish Council agreed to give a donation to the John Foche Charity, a local parish charity dating back four hundred years. Planning:- The Parish Council have considered four planning applications over the two months. The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. Budget:- The Parish Council discussed the budget again for next year and agreed to ask for a 5% increase in Council Tax to help fund a traffic survey. This was finalised at the January meeting. Speeding/Traffic:- The sub committee has met twice to discuss the best sites for the traffic survey. A recommendation was made to the Council and they have decided to go ahead with the Kent County Council traffic survey. The location of the sites is to be decided at the February meeting. The purpose of the traffic survey is to collect a base line of data for future use in any traffic/speeding issues in the parish. Correspondence:- Information from the County Council on flooding and general information from Kent Police is now available via links on the Parish Council website. Report from Walmer Parish Council’s December and January meetings. Chairman’s Report:- Cllr Pat Heath thanked everyone for their kind cards and thoughts regarding the illness in his family. He also thanked Vice-chair Cllr Grant for ‘steering the ship’ for several months, the officers and all those who had worked extra hard during his absence. Questions and Observations from the Electorate of Walmer:- A resident of Cambridge Road asked for clarification on dog laws in the area, particularly where dogs should be on leads and she also pointed out the problem of inconsiderate owners allowing their dogs to foul Walmer Green. Councillors shared her concerns and will ask the dog warden to patrol the area. Cllrs. Mrs Ludwig and Brian Pitcher attended a surgery along with the PCSO and the council resolved that such surgeries were worthwhile and should continue. Next surgery to take place on 25th February 2017. Cllr P Heath and Cllr Mrs Johnson to attend. Finance & General Purposes Committee:- Following a discussion on the next budget, members resolved to keep council tax as near as possible to the current level. Standing Orders:- Cllr Roger Evans has agreed to review the document and asked for councillors’ comments. Cllrs Murray and Mrs LeChevalier had supplied the Clerk with some comments already. Walmer in Bloom:- The Chairman, Cllr Mrs Sue le Chevalier was pleased to announce that Shirley Howard, the co-founder of Walmer in Bloom, had been co-opted back onto the committee. The committee will work with Deal Council again this year because having the same hanging baskets as those in Deal had created an attractive and impressive display. She also praised the hard work done by volunteers behind the scenes. WWI Memorial project:- Members agreed, subject to inspection of a model, to order a commemorative stand to be installed on Parish Council land on the Freedown at a cost of £3818. The new stand will be positioned near the existing memorial and contain historic information about the Freedown’s part in both World Wars. Some members asked why a new Commemorative Stand was necessary. Cllrs Heath and Grant reminded members that the present memorial does not stand on public land and it does not belong to the Parish Council, all of which combine to make any efforts for refurbishment and continued maintenance difficult. External Audit:- Members received the Interim Internal Audit Report from David Buckett, the Council’s Independent Internal Auditor. Members noted that there were no issues of concern and the officers were praised for their excellent work. KCC Volunteer Support Warden:- It was resolved that the Council joins the KCC Volunteers Support Scheme. (For more information see the report on the work of the Community Warden on page 33.) Training:- Members agreed to adopt an updated Training Policy for members and officers. Date of next meeting:- Wednesday, 8th February 2017 at 7pm at the Parish Office, 8 The Strand, Walmer. Romney Marsh Wools..What a hopeful, warm, subject to hear about on a grey, wet, January day. Kristina Boulden came to give us a glimpse into a year in the life of the six generation family sheep farm on Romney Marsh. We learnt how in 2008 she and her husband diversified, and began Romney Marsh Wool, and we were presented at the meeting with all sorts of lovely things, from slippers to blankets to lanolin cream.
Their logo is a picture of the shepherd’s crook which belonged to her hus-band Paul’s grandfather; Paul still uses ithe crook today to catch wayward sheep. We learnt that Paul shears about 1000 sheep every year...I found that quite hard to imagine! We were shown delightful pictures of lambs on the screen, which made us look forward to Spring Diana read us her very moving poem about migrants and some people’s attitude towards them...it gave us much food for thought. There are various activities planned, which we can take part in...April seems particularly full! A WI Fair at Alexandra Palace on 1st, Spring Garden Day in Canterbury on 5th, to name but two. On the 22nd March is the Annual Council Meeting at Margate, where we will hear Terry Waite speak. Next month our meeting will be on 13th February, when the speaker will be Gehad Homsey, talking about Mercy Ships UK, a charity providing hospital ships all over the world. We will meet at Kingsdown Hall at 2pm. Do come!

Dear Friends, This time of year (January to February) is known in the church calendar as Epiphany, and this is when we remember the visiting of the wise men. They followed a star which led them to where the baby Jesus was. This probably happened after the visit of the shepherds, though they often all feature together in nativity scenes. The wise men recognised Jesus as being God’s son and brought gifts that showed they recognised he was their Messiah or ‘the one who comes to save’. The star pointed the wise men to Jesus. I wonder what points us to Jesus today? It was lovely to see so many people in the churches over the Christmas period, especially at the Christingle services, which were particularly popular. People are clearly still drawn to Jesus today. I wonder how we can find out more about Jesus? Maybe you see God in the beauty of creation or in a quiet church or maybe for you it is in a particular piece of music. Some of these types of questions are the sort of things that we discuss in our informal church services particularly Breakfast Church, but also at Funday Sunday and Messy Church. They give us an opportunity to talk and share our thoughts and ideas with each other, and everyone is welcome. May I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. John Gray. St John’s Heritage Association
St John’s Heritage Association is the fund-raising arm of St John the Evangelist, Kingsdown. The Association was set up four years ago to raise funds for a number of essential repairs to the building fabric and to assist in modifying the building to meet the requirements of the latest regulations and accepted standards. Since inception we have raised through membership, Gift Aid and fund-raising events a total of £7,760, some of which has been donated to the Church, i.e. £810 for the new floodlights at the rear of the church and £822 for urgent repairs to the West Window. The remainder will be used for the work currently being undertaken to stained glass of the West Window. However, there is much restoration work still to be done to the remainder of the stained glass windows that are all in a fragile state and will cost in the region of £25,000. We still do not have a proper wheelchair access into the church nor satisfactory external lighting to Chancellors Walk. Both of these are required under the Health and Safety regulations, but there is only so much we can afford at any given time and it will take many years of fund-raising before we can reach this and future goals. Whilst other fund-raising events are held each year, namely the 100 Club, a Curry Supper, a Quilting Exhibition and an Art exhibition, at present the Association provides the primary source of income through its membership and events. We currently have 36 members of whom ten are lifetime members, the remainder pay an annual subscription of £10 for an individual and £18 for a couple. Lifetime membership is a minimum of £100. Nearly all members have signed a Gift Aid Declaration that increases our subscription income by a further 25% minimum. Therefore, the more members we have the more income we can generate and new members will be most welcome. This year we joined in with the Village Safari and all proceeds from our tables were donated to the church. A Mediterranean Supper Evening was held in the summer and a concert entitled the Last Night of the Proms in September. These raised a total of £1,600. The three events chosen for 2017 will hopefully raise even more. The Association is run by a small committee that meets at six-weekly intervals but, due to some members moving away and another retiring, fresh blood is urgently required. The events that are run by the Association are fun, not unduly onerous and for a worthwhile cause, so if you can find the time, we would be pleased to welcome you on board. The Post Office has given Walmer Parish Council an undertaking that they are searching for an alternative location locally following the closure of their branch in the Londis shop at 311-313, Dover Rd., Upper Walmer. Because the closure is only temporary there was no public consultation. However, the post office will not reopen in Londis.

During February and March the Community Warden will be staging 'Scam and Doorstep Bogus Tradesman' presentations in the Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown areas, and the dates and locations will be in the local press. The Community Wardens share information with Trading Standards about rogue traders, bogus callers and underage alcohol related issues that cause problems in communities and engage and work proactively with children and young people. The wardens support vulnerable people in their areas. Visits are also made to local Schools to carry out safety presentations covering Road Safety and 'Stranger, Danger' talks. Community Wardens also work with partners to provide essential services during emergency situations e.g. Sheppey Crossing incident and flood support. Special Project Homes across East Kent have a special souvenir with a difference – one of five hundred sea shells which were hand painted for a unique Kingsdown Remem-brance service. The shells were collected and painted by Sue Parker White who was helped by her husband. They were generated as part of the community project which created 3,500 different poppies for the special Remem-brance service at St John’s Church, Kingsdown. Community groups, WI branches, local schools and many others
contributed to the project for which poppies were knitted, crocheted and painted. Mrs Parker-White decided to paint the sea shells and then invited local people to take them home as souvenirs of this special community project. Mrs Masheeda Downing whose son, Squadron Leader Anthony Downing was killed on active service in Afghanistan, created the project. She said that she was thrilled and delighted with the way in which the community had come together to remember those who gave their lives for their country and thanked everyone for their commitment and talent. The service was also the last taken by the Rev Cathy Sigrist who, after over six years in Kingsdown, has moved to a new parish in Cornwall.

Lights in Walmer
Walmer Parish Council is delighted to announce that first prize was won, once again by The Fuller Family of Newlands Drive. Judges described the traditional nativity scene as “bringing home the true meaning of Christmas. The property itself appears like a Gingerbread house with a hint of Willy Wonka!!” The Children’s choice category was judged by Tegan Perry, winner of the 2016 Walmer in Bloom poster competition and goes, once again,
to Basset House in Hawksdown, with pretty shooting stars, a true Christmas delight! Business Category Winner is Wale & Sons, this year with a variety of Christmas characters including a huge Rudolf and Santa on his sleigh! Runners up in the Competition included 16 Palmerstone Avenue who impressed the judges with a colourful and thoughtful display of magical delights. The Dixon Family of Dover Road, who have created an extravagant display of a multitude of lights. The family are collecting money for a Charity called ‘Holding On, Letting Go’, which supports bereaved children, who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives. So we encourage everyone to visit, enjoy the display and make a donation to this excellent cause. The Award for Community Effort went to Kennedy Drive, where nearly the whole cul-de-sac was lit up. Cllr Marguerite Beard Gould, one of the judges, considered it ‘a true Winter Wonderland showing fantastic Community Spirit’. Kennedy Drive spokesman, Simon Chapman said, “It’s all done in good fun! Our display has grown from just one resident displaying lights, to nearly all of us!! We all secretly enjoy the challenge!!” Councillors also selected ‘A Special Mention’, community effort award for Ardent Avenue for their very pretty, sophisticated displays.

The Rev’d Chris Maclean At the beginning of February we say goodbye to Chris and Melanie at the end of over three years of ministry in Walmer. Chris will be appointed priest-in-charge of Lydd with Greatstone-on-Sea, Brookland, Fairfield, and Brenzett with Snargate on the Romney Marsh on Monday 6th March. Goodbye is literally ‘God be with you’ and so we pray that God will bless Chris and Melanie in their new home, new community, new ministry, and work. We also give thanks for their ministry among us and the friendship they have shown. Please pray for Chris and Melanie; that God will give them the gifts they need to serve the people and churches of their new parishes and that they will be blessed richly. God be with you.
St Mary’s, Walmer, Tower Roof Repairs A very big thank you to everyone who has contributed so generously to our Tower appeal so far. Lewis), The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Prince Caspian (both written
by C S Lewis).
Sessions will run on Tuesday lunchtime, afternoon, or evening; Wednesday
evenings (2 groups); or Thursday afternoon in different venues across Walmer be-
ginning early in March.
There will be film viewings throughout February.

Candlemas
Our celebration of the birth of Jesus through Christmas and Epiphany
ends with the feast of Candlemas. There will be a special Eucharist in
Blessed Mary of Walmer, Church St, Walmer, at 7.30pm on Thursday 2nd
February. During the service we will light candles to remember Jesus as
‘a light to the Gentiles’.
Lent
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on 1st March.
There will be services with the Rite of Ashing in St Saviour’s at 10.30am and Blessed
Mary of Walmer at 7.30pm.
