w nunue d From rlrgs Iincident in the 100-mile sprin t.

Holbert got bw k on the winning track

in the next race a t Daytona, winning the250-mile Paul Revere race, giving theMonza its firat win in a race longer than100 miles. It wasn't a stro ng win. comingmore at the expense of problems byothers. but it was a win.

Two more races with poor resultsfollowed before a Monza again made it tothe winner's circle as Holbert recordedyet another victory in the bizarre rain-race at Pocono. That race was followed byHalbert's third-place finish at Mid-Ohioin the Three-hours and a clear victory inthe Road Atlslita 500 kilometers. Thatrace ga;e Holbrrt h ls slxth vlctory of theseason in 13 races Monzas had wonseven.

Normally, winning half of the racesshould just about wrap up the title for adriver, but as noted. this was not youraverage garden-variety year for theIMSA series. In spite of - the record.

Holbert still ha s his hands fullwiththree-time Camel GT Champ Peter Gregginthefactory-backed BMW and Ji m Busby inthe BrumosIMltcom Porsche. The twohave been just a s consistent as Holbert ineach race to keep the Monza pilot fromrunning away and hiding.

Gregg started the year offwithhiethirdvictory in the 24 Hours of Daytona.sharing the ride with Brian Redman.Grege. another Porsche defector this

A fourth a t Mid-Ohioin June and the most recent 16th-placefinish at Road Atlanta are hi s other twofinishes. In short. although he hasn't wonas many races a s he had in the pas t. h e h ~been a model of consistency, leaving himwith the only chance to overtake Holbsrtfor the tltle. If you didn't hav e a Monaathis season . aBMW was probably then extbeat choice.

This was supposed to be the year that

Tha t, added to the Holb srtIKeyaer vlctory. gave Porsche a total of

five thus far. not a bad record. Everyonereslued the Porsches would be touah tobeat in the long races, whlch they wsrs.but they also managed to pick up aomewins in the short sprints as well. Busbygot things rolling with a victory atOntario, following yet another bum pingincident with Peter Gregg in that race.Dyer followed up Busby 's win scoring inthe next race at Lime Rock. nippingKeyser's Monza by the incredible marginof .W1 seconds at the finish, about th eleng th of a bumper.

In July. Busby won at Sear s Point, withDyer second as the Porsches dominatedthat event. Jim then scored a victorv inthe Mid-Ohio Three-hour in ~ u g u e t i n dfollowed wrth a second at Road Atlanta. Not really a bad year for a car whicheveryone sa id was uncompetitive. It maynot h ave had the speed of the Monzas andBMW, but it could still win.

The point st an &n p pretty much ref-lected the season. Holbert leads, needingonly a seventh-place finish or better in

title. Gregg ia in seaond, needing twovictories and two very low finishes byHolbert to take the title again. Busby isthird, just out of the chss e for thechampi -onships, but still having a good chance atsecond should Gregg falter. NOW,he questio n is, where does IMSAand the Camel GT go from here? No ruleschanges will effect the lsat two races, butthey i re expected to be interesting any-wav.
