We are blessed in living in such a vibrant community here in Rusper. Without change village life can wither or stagnate. The opposite fear is that we may lose our identity and traditions and that the familiar may be no longer recognisable. The dust is literally still settling on the new homes that have been built through the arch where Wayside once was and we look forward to welcoming new faces into our community as they move in there. I’m personally delighted that the name Chalice Walk has been adopted for these new homes, referring as it does to the discovery in 1840 of a medieval chalice on the site of the Nunnery. The chalice, now in the British Museum might have been used by Saint Richard, a friend of our nuns when he visited. The thought becomes more tantalizing when we link that probability with a legend of the saint. It is said that on one occasion he dropped a chalice full of the consecrated wine during a celebration of the Mass. Despite slipping from his hands to the floor, not a drop of the precious contents was spilled. Taken as a parable the story suggests that no matter however careless and clumsy we may be Our Father never is. Ours is the life he holds like a cup holds wine, and in Jesus he has formed his life to the shape of ours. This modest building development then is a step into the future with a firm hold on our past. When you are next moved to cup your hands in prayer, please remember our village, our church and the most fragile and needy of people in need of prayer and may I suggest that with St Richard it may be a prayer that asks Jesus that we may see him more clearly, love him

more dearly and follow him more nearly.

Nick is here to minister to all who have need in our parishes. He is keen to be told if someone has moved in and to have an opportunity to visit newcomers. Holy Communion can be arranged for the housebound or those who are sick. Nick tries to take Thursday as a rest day each week, so he kindly suggests that you only contact him on a Thursday in matters of urgency.

RUSPER VILLAGE STORES AND...... CAFE!

The village stores and post office has recently introduced a new fresh bean to cup coffee machine, with a loyalty card, so your 9th coffee is free. A slush puppie machine has also improved the experience for customers. Coming soon are improvements to the external seating area, and the installation of an internal coffee bar to provide our own cafe style facility - a place to stop by, enjoy a drink, a snack, and a chat, whatever the Rusper weather. If you have any ideas to boost the business and amenities of the store, or would like to be involved, please let David or one of his team know. Additionally have your say at the shop’s AGM in the Village Hall on 9th October, when your involvement is welcome, the Statutory Accounts will be reviewed, and you can enjoy a drink with your store team. More than ever, we need the custom and support of you, Rusper residents and visitors to the village, and welcome feedback and any input, to maintain and improve what is a great facility for Rusper – not many places can boast a shop, a post office and coffee bar in the heart of the village! Many thanks Martin Wynn, Chairman, Rusper Village Stores Limited

JEAN JORY (NEE PACKHAM) 1921 – 2017

Jean was born in October 1921 in Worth to Edward and Gladys Packham. She was the eldest of 4 children. They moved to Rusper (Friday Street) when she was 5 and went to Rusper School where she was walked to and from school by Win Cox who passed away only a couple of years ago. She married Harold (who passed away 22 years ago). Jean lived in Oak Cottage (near Green Lane) until September 1950 when the family moved to a new house in Cooks Mead. Jean lived there until it got a bit too large for her and moved into sheltered accommodation in Crawley in 2003. However, the house in Cooks Mead stayed in the family when granddaughter Sarah and her now husband, Neil moved in and as well as being the childhood home of Ann and John, it was also the childhood home of 2 of her great-grandsons, Henry and Edward Broadley, until they moved at the end of last year. Jean is survived by her 2 children, Ann (Roberts) and John (Jory). Like Jean, John and Ann both went to Rusper School as did grand-daughter Sarah (but only for a day) and her 3 great-grandsons Henry, Edward and Daniel. Clearly she made a major contribution to the on-going viability of Rusper School! Jean was an active member of the Rusper Young Wives group and the Rusper Social group. She worked in service at Rusper Nunnery for Sir Cecil and Miss Barbara Hurst before working with her husband Harold at Fields Garage in Crawley High Street. Jean then worked for Sainsbury’s in Queens Square Crawley before moving to their new store in Crawley just along from Marks & Spencer. Hard to imagine that, at the time it was the largest Sainsbury’s in the country. She retired from Sainsbury’s at age 60 (because they had to at that age) and ended up working at Normans for Paulo and Jenny Gucci. Their daughter Gemma used to love spending afternoons at Jean and Harold’s house in Cooks Mead where she would help Jean to make cakes.

Jean and Harold were keen campers and Jean always preferred camping in a tent rather than a caravan and would love to spend time with the grand-children – camping in The New Forest or caravanning at The South of England Show (whilst Harold worked there). In their advancing years they enjoyed walking holidays in Austria, holidays in Italy, camping in Spain, a trip to Disneyland in Florida and even skiing in Slovenia aged 70! Always seen as the matriarch of the family and she did so much to keep the family close together and it’s through her that the family remains so close. I don’t think any of her family and friends will ever forget Sunday afternoon tea with Jean and Harold at Cooks Mead with everything home made by Jean – bread, scones, cakes and particularly the chocolate coconut cakes – divine! John Jory

RUSPER CHRONICLE We missed Margaret, recovering from knee surgery. The meeting was a lively one with members sharing research on the Broadwood family and whetting appetites for the concert. Do search online for ‘Turtledove Pilgrimage’ for a short film of folk singing at the Plough. The family’s spiritual home was Rusper but they were involved in the affairs of Capel, Newdigate and Colgate too. Mary read extracts from a new biography [2011] of Lucy Broadwood by Dorothy de Val, and there were contributions from Lynne and Jean. There was the usual array of documents to be sifted through at leisure and a showing of the 2002 TV programme featuring the Copper family singing outside Rusper Church. We hope to follow up with a visit to Lyne in September. Nick In July’s RPN we were trying to solve the mystery of the house named Woodbury. The 1911 census suggests that the house was between East Street cottages and Normans and it had 10 rooms. In 1912 Mrs Sarah Cotton advertised for a good general Cook to cook early dinners for a small family in the country. So we have come to the conclusion that the house name was changed from Woodbury to Longfield at some time but when the name change happened we still do not know. Longfield was the home of Diana Beryl de la Rue, 5th child of Lady Mary Violet de la Rue who moved to Normans from Hertfordshire in January 1926. Lady de la Rue died at Longfield aged 83 on the 19th October 1959 and her funeral was held at Rusper church on the 23rd October. Diana lived to the same age as her mother and died in 1998. Does anyone know when Diana moved into Longfield or when the name was changed from Woodbury to Longfield? Joan Frazer

HOPE KEITH TRUST

Hi there, I have enjoyed the opportunity of meeting more local residents recently in very different surroundings. The Annual Parish

Meeting was well attended for a rainy summer evening and it was interesting to learn about the work of the Parish Council and to hear of the concerns of local residents. At the annual litter picking event the sun

was out as were all age groups keen to tidy up the village for everyone’s enjoyment and peace of mind. It is always heartening to see how many people are willing to contribute to village life and with that in mind I am keen that you should be aware that there are volunteer opportunities available with Age UK Horsham District with our Home Visiting Service for older people. Just giving a couple of hours a week can make all the difference to an older person who finds themselves isolated for any number of reasons. As a volunteer you are

carefully matched to provide friendly companionship and support offering a lifeline to the outside world. Volunteers are supported by the Visiting Services Coordinator and by a team of people at Age UK Horsham District who are all committed to supporting older people in later life. If you are interested in this opportunity or any other services provided by Age UK Horsham District please telephone 01403 260560 or contact me on 07591 049042. Hoping that you get to enjoy a lovely summer, Best Wishes, Gaby Aldrich, Village Agent Rusper and Colgate, Age UK Horsham District

THE RUSPER DIARY

In the June magazine, we did a trial of a diary of events for the coming month. This seemed a great success and will now be a regular feature. People who pay for an advertisement in the magazine can post their event in the diary free of charge. There will be no charge for non-profit-making events either People running a commercial event will be asked to make a donation towards printing costs. As with all submissions for the magazine please ensure you email the editor by the 14th of the month prior to the month for which the event is running. If applicable please make donation through the editor. As always it is all subject to space being available. Sue Matthewson 01293 871266

RUSPER PARISH COUNCIL

• Rusper Parish Council holds its full meeting on the last Tuesday of each month at 8pm in the Village Hall

• The Planning and the Neighbourhood Plan sub-committee meetings are held concurrently on the third Tuesday of each month at 8pm in the Village Hall

• Agendas for all meetings are posted on Parish noticeboards and the web site prior to meetings

• Public and press are welcome to attend both of the above meetings.

• All correspondence for the Parish Council and requests for copies of the minutes of meetings should be sent by email to [email protected] or by post to: The Parish Clerk, Leanne Bannister, c/o Rusper Post Office, East Street, Rusper RH12 4PX.

• Full details of Parish Council meetings, proceedings and activities are available on the web site at www.rusper-pc.org.uk and the Rusper Parish Council Facebook page.

Rusper Village 20mph Speed limit Following the speed survey commissioned by Rusper Parish Council earlier in the year and the analysis of the data produced we have received the following from West Sussex County Council Highways department: Analysis of the speed data demonstrates that the proposal would not comply with the County Council’s policy for a 20mph speed limit. The policy requires that for a 20mph speed limit to be effective, mean average speeds should not exceed 24mph. At each of the locations where data has been recorded the mean average is significantly greater than this.

• Near Ghyll Manor 31.3mph northbound, 29.4mph southbound • On East Street 28.1mph eastbound, 30.4mph westbound

Page 17: Rusper Parish Newsrusperchurch.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/... · bean to cup coffee machine, with a loyalty card, so your 9th coffee is free. A slush puppie machine has also

Rusper Parish News August 2017 11

• Near the school 28.1mph northbound, 30.4mph southbound • At the start of the existing 30 on Horsham Road 32.2mph

northbound, 31.1mph southbound These average speeds are conducive with our expectation for a 30mph speed limit. Having regard for the speed management policy I do not consider that West Sussex County Council can support a 20mph speed limit at this time Whilst it is dissappointing that WSCC cannot support a 20MPH limit Rusper Parish Council will look into the feasibility of putting in place the “physical engineering measures” mentioned above by seeking sources of potential funding. Given also that 60% of the traffic passing through the village exceeds the 30MPH speed limit we should perhaps also look closer to home as a proportion of this is possibly down to residents themselves. (Please see the Parish Council web site for more detail - www.rusper-pc.org.uk)

Operation Crackdown There was a useful presentation from a Community Police Support Officer at the Annual Parish Meeting on June 27th who gave an overview of the “Operation Crackdown” and “Crimestoppers” initiatives. Operation Crackdown is a Sussex based online reporting facility which enable you to report anti-social driving or abandoned vehicles – see www.operationcrackdown.org - and builds up a database of repeat behaviour or incidents which in turns enables the Police to take action based on a body of evidence. From a national perspective, Crimestoppers offers the facilty to report crime anonymously - see crimestoppers-uk.org - either by phone or online.

Rusper Parish News August 2017 12

Both of these services are a useful way of reporting your concerns at a time when community policing is less in evidence and the Police face greater pressures on their limited resources.

Rusper “Big Clean” Many thanks to all those who turned out for the Rusper “Big Clean” a few Sundays ago, organised by Councillor Alan Sheridan. The village and surrounds looked a lot cleaner as a result – let’s hope it continues to stay that way. Roland Allen Councillor, Rusper Parish Council

Neighbourhood Planning The Neighbourhood Planning group continues to meet on the third Tuesday each month in the Village Hall at 8pm. As we progress to calling for submissions for the plan, community involvement in the consideration of the options will become more important. In the coming months we will be setting up smaller forums to cover different aspects of the overall plan for the area. So if you are interested in how our community develops over the next 30 years, now is the time to get involved. Contact the clerk by email at [email protected] George Sallows Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Committee
