Who was the first woman to go into space?

Valentina Tereshkova was born in the village Maslennikovo (6 March , 1937 ).After the flight of Yuri Gagarin in 1961, Sergey Korolyov, the chief Soviet rocket engineer, came up with the idea of putting a woman in space. And this woman was Valentina.Then Tereshkova studied at the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy and graduated with distinction as a cosmonaut engineer. In 1977 she earned a doctorate in engineering.

On 16 February, 1962, Valentina Tereshkova was selected to join the female cosmonaut corps. Out of more than four hundred applicants, five were selected: Tatyana Kuznetsova, Irina Solovyova, Zhanna Yorkina, Valentina Ponomaryova, and Valentina Tereshkova. Qualifications included that they should be parachutists under 30 years of age, under 170 cm

(5 feet 7 inches) tall, and under 70 kg (154 lbs.) in weight.

Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya is a former Soviet aviator and cosmonaut who flew aboard Soyuz T-7 in 1982, becoming the second woman in space some 19 years after Valentina Tereshkova. She was born on August 8, 1948. Svetlana became the first woman to perform a space walk on July 25, 1984.

Her life.

Svetlana conducted an outside the Salyut 7 space station for 3 hours 35 minutes during which she cut and welded metals in space along with her colleague Vladimir Dzhanibekov. She is the daughter of the Soviet military commander Yevgeniy Savitskiy. She is married, with one child.She started training as a cosmonaut in 1980. She was twice awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title. The asteroid 4118 Sveta is named for her.Savitskaya retired in 1993 from the Russian Air Force with the rank of Major.

Yelena Vladimirovna Kondakova (March 30, 1957) was the third Russian female cosmonaut to travel to space and the first woman to make a long-duration spaceflight. Her first trip into space was on Soyuz TM-20 on October 4, 1994. She returned to Earth on March 22, 1995 after a five-month stay at the Mir space station. Kondakova was born in Mytishchi in the Moscow Region of Russia and is married to fellow cosmonaut Valeri Ryumin. She was selected as a cosmonaut candidate in 1989.Since 1999, Kondakova has served as a deputy in the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.
