Rustic Christmas—Paper Pieced Banner,

Wall Hanging or Table Runner

Materials Needed

6-8 fat quarters of various Christmas prints - Blocks

1/2 yard white polka dot fabric—Blocks

1/3 yard coordinating red print —Blocks & Binding

1/3 yard gold fabric—Blocks and Border

1/2 yard coordinating fabric—Backing

Quilt Batting

Easy paper pieced blocks turn into

a mini pillow, a rustic banner , a

table runner or an adorable wall

hanging. Test your skills with

these simple blocks and you’ll be

ready for a Rustic Christmas!

Finished Block Size: 7 x 7 inches

All seams are 1/4 inch , unless otherwise

noted in instructions

Assume width of fabric = 42 inches

Sew seams with right sides together

Instructions For the Mini Pillow

Step 1: Make your favorite paper pieced block.

Step 2: For the border, cut 2 rectangles that measure 1.5 x 7.5 inches and 2

rectangles that measure 1.5 x 9.5 inches.

Step 3: Referring to the diagram at right, lay out the block and the rectangles.

Sew the 1.5 x 7.5 rectangles to the left and to the right of the block. Next sew

the 1.5 x 9.5 rectangles to the top and to the bottom of the block.

Step 4: Quilt the block using your favorite quilting technique.

Step 5: Cut a pillow back from coordinating fabric that measures 9.5 x 9.5

inches. With right sides together (quilted block and backing fabric) sew

around the block using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Be sure to leave a small

opening at the top so you can turn the pillow right side out!

Step 6: Trim corners and turn the mini pillow right side out.

Step 7: Stuff the mini pillow with your favorite stuffing and slip stitch the opening closed.

Finished Pillow Size: 8.5 x 8.5 inches

Instructions For the Banner:

Step 1: Make four paper pieced blocks.

Step 2: Quilt each block using your favorite quilting

technique.

Step 3: Make the binding for each block by sewing

together 2 1/4 inch strips until you have a 36 inch long

binding strip.

Step 4: Attach the binding to your blocks using your fa-

vorite binding technique.

Step 5: Cut a piece of colorful cording at least 48 inches

long.

Step 6: Hang your four quilted blocks from the cording

using clothespins.

Spray paint clothespins using a bright color or

a metallic finish.

Personalize your banner by stitching a name at the

top of each stocking...don’t forget your pets!

Sign the back of each block with a color safe pen.

Add the year so it becomes an heirloom.

Instructions For the Wall Hanging

Step 1: Make four paper pieced blocks.

Step 2: Using the diagram at right as your guide,

cut (9) 1.5 x 1.5 red squares and (12) 1.5 x 7.5 inch

gold rectangles.

Step 3: Make a quilt sandwich with backing fabric

(wrong side facing up), quilt batting and quilt top

(right side facing up).

Step 4: Quilt the wall hanging using your favorite

quilting technique.

Step 5: Make the binding by sewing together 2 1/4

inch strips until you have an 80 inch long binding

strip.

Step 6: Attach the binding to your wall hanging

using your favorite binding technique.

Finished Wall Hanging Size: 18.5 x 18.5 inches

Instructions For the Table Runner

Step 1: Make the paper pieced blocks.

Step 2: Using the table below as your guide, cut red squares and gold rectangles to make the table runner the length you

desire.

Step 3: Make a quilt sandwich with backing fabric (wrong side facing up), quilt batting and quilt top (right side facing up).

Step 4: Quilt the table runner using your favorite quilting technique.

Step 5: Make the binding by sewing together 2 1/4 inch strips until you have the correct amount with an additional 10-12

inches for corners and for sewing the endings together.

Step 6: Attach the binding to the table runner using your favorite binding technique.
