STATE OF THE UNION 2008To me, feedback has always been the key to progress. Feedback from great surfers, good surfers and even beginning surfers is important. With open eyes, ears, and an open mind, there are no limits when it comes to the evolution of surfboards. This is what makes us better and keeps the passion alive.

Now is the most exciting time ever to be building surfboards. With computers, CAD design, the Internet and the ability to exchange information, technology, resources and materials, the next great surfboard is a mouse click

away.

Having built surfboards for nearly four decades now, I have seen many great innovations from so many great shapers. These designs become seeds for newer ones, helping to evolve the materials

we work with and the processes in which we use to construct them.

Just look at the evolution: Redwood to balsa, urethane/polyester to EPS/epoxy, composite to…? One thing’s for sure about the future of surfboard building: There will always be new technology to test

our riders’ limits. I wouldn’t say that any of these materials have more soul than the other. Nor do the tools that we shape them with.

Simply, the boards bringing my customers the greatest happiness are products of constantly evolving materials and tools.

To be a surfer now, there are more choices than ever. For our 2008 Rusty Surfboards Line, I’ve tried to streamline and focus our stock models into tighter, more understandable groups. The goal is to allow you to

build your quiver as precisely as possible and to put you on surfboards that just plain work.

One thing that hasn’t changed is my commitment to the custom surfboard. If you can’t find what you need in our 2008 Surfboard Line, we will build you one to your specs. Easy as that.

…And, yes, I still shape.

67/68 Winter of 69/70 Winter of 70/71 1978

The shortboard revolution begins. I began shaping.

I travel to Hawaii for the first time. Since then I have averaged at

least two trips a year to the Islands to surf, shape and stay in touch

with design.

Early Influences: Dick Brewer, Mike Hynson, Mike Diffenderfer, Mike

Croteau, Mike Eaton, Jim Turner, Skip Frye and Bill Caster, to name a few.

I began judging pro contests, including several Pipe Masters,

Burleigh Heads Australia, a handful of the World Tour events on the East

Coast, and a few of the first OP Pro contests. It was an opportunity for me to scrutinize the equipment

and minds of the best surfers on the planet. 1978 was a pivotal year in

my development as a shaper because it allowed me to connect with and

shape for these surfers.

Page 3: Rusty Surfboards 09

SHAPER OF THE YEAR

“And while creativity is king, it still takes a firm grounding in the practicality of surfboard

construction—from complex hydrodynamics to basic economics—to make it work from the

everyday surfer. And that’s Rusty in a nutshell. An artist with plenty of business experience.

A grounded craftsman with the foundation of success to support wild experimentation. And,

quite simply, a surfer, and a great lover of surfboards. He is exactly the sort of godfather this

evolutionary explosion needs to find its footing.”

–Nathan Myers, Surfing Magazine

Early 1980’s 1990’s Today

Most of the top 16 were riding my designs, so I stepped away

from judging events and shaping for Canyon Surfboards to start the Rusty label. My focus shifted to the

team riders I sponsored.

As the Rusty brand grew, I didn’t have to worry about the clothing design and marketing of Rusty so much, allowing me to come full circle and get back to my roots,

which is focusing just on shaping.

Our 2008 team is built on innovation and evolution. From

Jamie O’Brien to Josh Kerr, Nate Yeomans to Kalani Chapman, my designs are pushed to the limits every day in all types of

conditions, inspiring me to push the limits in the shaping bay.

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene foam)

12-5-05 or Black Monday as it came to be called, catalyzed a movement that had been percolating

for decades.

Crisis had become opportunity. With molded composite boards already gaining popularity, the time

was right to build something not only light, strong and custom, but with good flex characteristics.

Coached by Greg Loehr, John Parton, Pedro Vasquez, Greg Mungal, and a handful of other

individuals from Planet Swaylocks – who have embraced this construction for over 20 years—I

dove in headfirst and haven’t looked back since.

Feedback from our team and customers is positive, and demand is rising as the word

spreads. The fact that EPS foam can be custom shaped and innovations like parabolic

or perimeter stringers and structural spars can be incorporated in these shapes is

exciting. For the first time, the possibilities are endless and, more importantly, surfers

are embracing that fact.

Surfboard specific EPS foam and Epoxy resins are evolving rapidly. EPS/Epoxy

is a greener alternative to Polyurethane/polyester construction. In fact, many of

the key components in traditional PU/PE construction look to be regulated into

exile in the not too distant future.

Another testimony to the validity of EPS/Epoxy construction is the fact

that other major surfboard manufacturing regions outside the U.S., like

Australia are starting to embrace the technology. With no foam crisis,

builders outside the U.S. didn’t have the same sense of urgency. Now,

based on pure performance, they are joining the movement.

We got a R.evolution goin’ on!

MODEL REDLINE PARABOLIC

BIO

Shift your Redline into overdrive with our unique parabolic stringer construction. This board is tuned up for more speed, drive and return on rail surfing.

SPECS

The parabolic stringers move the center point of flex off the stringer, allowing for both rails to torque independently of one another and ultimately creating a board that loads harder off the bottom and springs faster into action.

MODEL BURNOUT

BIO

Nate Yeoman’s go-to board. The Burnout is a logical balance between the Redline and Injector, perfect for surfers that prefer the feel and versatility of a high performance swallowtail.

SPECS

Single concave that finishes with a slight vee to lift the corners of the tail. Moderate nose rocker and higher than average tail rocker that lifts early off the midpoint. The tail shape allows for slightly more width through the fin area while adding extra bite and hold in larger surf. It also releases quicker off the top.

MODEL GT

BIO

The GT is your go to board for “between” swells, i.e. average, everyday surf. Back foot oriented surfers will enjoy the lift, drive and skate of this small wave machine.

SPECS

Deep single concave between the feet running into a slight vee flaring off the corners, helping add rail arc and complete turns. Average entry rocker, plenty of curve on the rail for tighter arcs, finished with relatively flat tail rocker. The GT’s tail is a little wider than average, with volume shifted back. MODEL BAT TAIL QUAD STEALTH TAIL QUAD

BIO

If you’ve never ridden a quad the first thing you’ll feel is the speed out of the gate and no apparent top end. Quads also accelerate through cutbacks and redirect on a dime.

Because the Battail has been so popular in the last year, it’s already got some nasty offspring: the Stealth. It’s a small wave machine with the area and volume aft...it’s a quad version of GTR.

SPECS

Moderate concave through the drive area with a light vee spine apparent in the last 6 inches off the tail. Semi relaxed entry rocker with an average overall curve.

Wider tail than the Bat with more nose rocker to keep the front end free. A little more bend through the middle to tighten turning radius. Comes with grab rail grooves.

MODEL TERMINATOR GROM

BIO

Formerly known as T2, The Terminator is a board designed for larger, experienced surfers. The proportions and bottom make it front foot friendly.

The Grom is geared for lighter, younger surfers with intermediate to good skills – their style is evolving, turns are getting linked, and they’re starting to punt when they get the opportunity.

SPECS

Has a nose that is proportionately slightly fuller. This pulls the wide point up closer to center. Light feeder concave splits into a double and finishes with a slight, cupped vee through the fins.

Concave and rocker resemble a scaled down Redline, with template proportions similar to the Terminator. Younger, lighter surfers need a little bit more area up front to help pull them through their turns.

MODEL PIRANHA

BIO

Our proven, extremely popular, everyday modern fish. Among other things, traditional fish have a long, straight, rail line relative to their overall length and a lot of area behind the foot. The tail area is stepped down with 3 sets of wings. This helps to make the board quicker from rail to rail and tighten the turns.

SPECS

Rocker, bottom and thickness are similar to a performance shortboard like Burnout. Has a full nose with the wide point nudged in front of center. The triple wings step a fairly wide tail down to about a 5 ½" inch split.

WAVE SIZEThe Piranha has surprisingly good range and will prove to be good fun in a variety of conditions into the well overhead range.

MODEL TOAD

BIO Ugly as… But an absolute prince in shit surf.

SPECS

Mixes something old and something new. For the Toad we’ve thrown decades worth of design in the blender: Early 70’s G&S/Morey Waterskate, an egg, concave deck, concave bottom, four fins, and steep, angular rails with a tight bottom radius. EPS/Epoxy only… gotta be light!Note: Ride about 4 to 6 inches shorter than your average shortboard. Also, because of the concave deck center thickness will be ¼" to 3⁄8" thinner than a normal surfboard deck.

MODEL MOD FISH MOD QUAD

BIO

The Mod Fish spawned out of the post modern fish craze a few years ago. This is a modern update that allows for vertical surfing and full carves.

The Mod Quad is a natural update to the twin. Look for a little more drive out of turns and more control on your backhand than the Mod Fish.

SPECS

Compared to a classic fish, the Mod Fish has more overall rocker. Its outline is not quite as full in the nose and its tail is narrower. Modern rails and modern concave that is deepest in front of fins.

Similar to the Mod Fish, but features a flatter deck that brings increased volume out towards the rails.

MODEL CLASSIC FISH ‘84 ‘89 ‘69

BIO

My first custom board was a Mirandon/Surfboards La Jolla Twinpin, circa late ‘67 early ‘68. This design reportedly inspired Steve Lis to make his early fishes. Then in the early 70’s, I was shaping at G&S and watched Skip Frye shape plenty of fishes. Still a legit design for running beach breaks and lined up points.

Occy’s board from his bust out year. The Raging Bull was unstoppable on it. The ’84 is also considered a very user friendly, versatile design.

In ’89, boards were getting narrower and thinner. They had a little more rocker and the beak nose look had become all but extinct.

The ’69 is an Egg by any other name: your late 60’s Aussie short board. Michael Peterson at Kirra. Skip Frye in the ’68 World Contest. Wayne Lynch in Evolution… It set the performance standards in the late 60’s.

SPECSTraditional, full nose with low rocker and even foil. The deck is fairly flat with full firm rails and plenty of edge in the last 15 or so inches.

Flat bottom under the front foot with a shallow vee and scooped panels through the fins and lifting off the corners of the tail. Relaxed rocker, flat deck, beak nose, and boxy rails.

Triple concave with a vee spine defined through the fins and off the tail. Compared to today’s boards, the rocker is a little more relaxed, but with similar rails.

Double concave with moderate rocker. Thin, round, modern performance shortboard rails.

BIO The DI is the one-board-that-does-it-all for larger, experienced surfers. The Moby is a great longboard alternative. Superior paddling and glider in small, soft surf. An excellent choice for beginners.

As the name implies, the Mini Tanker is a shorter version of the longboard. It’s an easy to manage, shorter longboard for lighter surfers. Also a good go-to, user friendly design for inexperienced surfers.

SPECSShorter DI’s come with triple concave, the longer ones (9' plus) have a flat vee panel. A larger DI has a relaxed gun rocker with full, low rails.

The Moby is like a giant fish with a touch of tail rocker and vee added to loosen it up. Its rails are full, low, and firm for plenty of lift and skate out of the gate.

Flat bottom with light vee in back third of the bird. Full nose and relaxed rocker.

REDLINE: “For me, the squash gives my boards the looseness and control. It just works for all kinds of surf, and all kinds of punts and turns.” –JoshKerr

INJECTOR: “I’m always looking for a board that can get me to crazy places on waves with solid power. I’m not out there riding crap surf, so the Roundtail gives me the control I need without sacrificing the maneuverability.” –Jamie O’Brien

BURNOUT: “Swallows just fit my style. I like speed and I like clean lines and I can get that every time with a swallowtail. Since I’m on the road doing ‘QS contests, the waves really aren’t that great all the time, but the swallow gives me the flexibility I need.” –Nate Yeomans
