    THE NORTH PATH

After the discovery in the Campus Stellae of Apostle Santiagos rests at

the beginning of the IX century, the monarch Alfonso II promotes the

pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulchre, travelling himself there and gave

orders to build a small temple, becoming this way in the first pilgrim in his-

    tory.

Protected by Carolus the Great with the intention of keeping his frontiers

away from the Muslim threat, a corridor along the Cantabrian Coast is built

which channels the first pilgrimage currents.

    Coming from

    France and Center

    Europe, they came by foot

    through Irun, with important contributions

by sea from England and the Nordic countries

through the many harbours along the coast. The

North Path, also called High Path opens, as a the

first St. James Route in which will converge the

new born European Paths, with the invisible

    Water Paths.

After traveling across most part of the coastal, the

most used Compostelas turnoff at that moment,

bringing into memory the tour of the monarch

    fromAsturias,departedfromSanSalvadortemple

in Oviedo, traveling through Leon and reaching

Santiago from inland, being recognized as the

    Primitive route.

fter the down of the Roman Empire and the fall of the spiritual practices, the first European

kingdoms start to adopt the Christianity as their common religion, beginning a process of cul-

tural unifying that will crystallize in the 12th Century with the great medieval movements of

peregrination, meanwhile the Islamic threat was forced to move down to the south of the Iber ia

Peninsula. The two main destinations of these peregrinations were Rome, where the Apostle Saint Peter

founded the Catholic Church, and Santiago de Compostela, Spain Patron and symbol of the Christianity resistan-

    ce facing the Muslims.

The two main destinations of these peregrina-

tions were Rome, where the Apostle Saint Peter

founded the Catholic Church, and Santiago de

Compostela, Spain Patron and symbol of the

    Christianity resistance facing the Muslims.

Around these two destinations was formed the

Via Francgena, that spreads over the North of

France, picking up the achievements of the

Northern countries by passing the sea up to

Canterbury, and of the Eastern of Europe by the

Baja Renania and the Saint Jacobs Way, the

great peregrination route that first roams throug-

hout the cantabrian mountain range to settle its

way through Navarra, La Rioja and Castilla, once

this territory was known and the Monasteries that

    helps the pilgrims was settled.

The cultural importance of these routes related to

the rise of Europe formed a key role as media of

transmission for the medieval knowledge which

from geography to medicine and from art to

    Cantabria treasu-res a unique sce-nic and cultural

heritage, fountain of ins-piration of poets andartists and a peacefulbackwater of enjoymentfor quiet and beautylovers. This combinationof culture and nature goes

with the pilgrim that enters this welcoming land guided by thefaith or the simple and lovely spiritual devotion of discovering thediversity and cultural paths.

Travel through the crossroads that the Cantabria geography opensout jeans discover a unique landscape, full of art, cultural heritage, raw nature, gastronomic surprises and human stories.

Stories like the ones forged through centuries by pilgrims and tra-vellers that walked the routes of Saint James Route through thecoast and the ones that discover the greatness of the Liebana'sRoute to Saint Toribio of Libana..

Both pilgrimage routes show a link between Cantabria and theEuropean Paths of Pilgrimage, symbols of culture and concord. Alink that shines stronger after the great celebration of theLiebana's Holy Year in 2006/07 and the jubilee of Xacobeo 2010.

Collegiate Churches like Santillana del Mar and Cervatos; mozara-bic churches like Santa Mara de Lebea, romanics like Bareyo orgothic like the four Marys (San Vicente, Santoa, Laredo y CastroUrdiales) and the cathedral of Santander stands closet o the pil-grims route reside great historical groups and cultural milestonesfor them to enjoy our landscape and civilians.

An appropriate and well cared shelter network will guide the pil-grim through this landmark, from Altamira to our present, charac-terizes its hospitality and wants to be a meeting point for culture.

    Francisco Javier Lpez Marcano

music was spread from one place to another leading for the first time in history to the creation of a com-

mon cultural identity all around the continent.

The important legacy retrieval has recently received a strong institutional support and a great

popular feedback which led to the development of services and products related to the route

and its knowledge. This legacy is well indicated and it has pilgrims' hostels all over.

And not only by the well known French Route but also in other mains historical routes such as the

Route along the Coast with leads

    through the region of Cantabria

from East to West, or the route

    Camino Lebaniego to Santo

Toribio, old version of the Saint

    Jacobs Way which drives the

pilgrims to the LignumCrucis, one of the most impor-

tant Christian relicts that was pre-

served from the Muslim threat in the

    mountains of Cantabria.

    THE NORTH PATH

    THROUGH THE COAST (9 stages).

    Jubilar Ways in Cantabria

From the X Century, with the withdrawal of the

Arabs to the South and due to the cluniacenses

influence, a new path was forged from La Rioja

and Castilla in favor to their powerful monaster-

ies, and from that moment the most used path,

even more, it avoided the winding route of thecoast and its steep north mountains. The

Santiagos Route (St. James Route) was defini-

tively established, opening the doors to an

    extraordinary cultural exchange that trans-

    formed the medieval world.

This French Path promoted from Cluny,

became in this way in the most commonly

accepted, although the Cantabrian Route never

lost its validity as a renown and traditional

    Route,withthecountlesschurches,hospitalsor

shelters, built afterwards with full of references

to Santiago or the pilgrimage itself.

Nowadays, and due to the great cultural

demand and to the reborn public interest for

these historical routes, different associations of

Santiagos Route friends, along with the con-

stant actions of the north regions

    Governments, started a revitalization process,

signalling and providing services to the old paths, that have

transformed the Coastal option in a powerful alternative to the

    conventional route.

The amount of integrative elements that merge in these routes

(art, religion, tourism, international exchange, sports, etc),

makes a growing value and multiplies its appeal.

The Coast Route in Cantabria crosses the region in nine stages,

from East to West, going through sailor or country villages, full

of historical milestones as Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Santoa,

Santander, Santillana del Mar, Comillas o San Vicente de la

Barquera, offering in all of them shelter for pilgrims and tourist

information offices, in addition to the green landscapes and

the spiritual serenity that our region offers to all hikers that

    wishes to travel this way.

The CrucenoRoute to Santo Toribio de Liebana

The immemorial link of Cantabria with the Santiago

Route, acquire in the region a dimensional addition,

as although this is the first and most secure route to

the Apostle tomb, pilgrims visited the Santo Toribio de Libana

    Monastery before continue towards Santiago.

For this reason, and without leaving Cantabria, they begun the

Camino Lebaniego o Camino Cruceno (Lebaniego

Route or Cruceno Route),througha coursethatintwo jour-

neys world drive them from around San Vicente de la

Barquera, throughout the hills that separate the Nansa and

Devas basin, to the unbroken stronghold of the Christians, as

a must for visiting due to its special importance.

supported by a great number the high standing performances in all range cultural and religious. It

meant a worldwide projection never before achieved, becoming it in a big attraction spot, getting a

historical reception feedback, not only by pilgrims moved by the spiritual fact but also for visitors

interested in the quality cultural tourism, as apart of the strict religion phenomenon , Liebanas

Valleywhich holds the Monastery, is one of the most beautiful mountain regions of Spain, and there

you can find, apart from the overwhelming landscapes of the Picos de Europa and a privileged surround-

ings, a complete offer in hotels, cultural heritage, touristy and gastronomy of high standing, and also a count-

less places of interest that turns this destination into and outstanding choice.

    Stage 1: El Haya de Ontn - Castro-Urdiales ( 15,7 Km )

IUnbelievable landscapes of the mountains and of the Cantabrian shore. The route departs from the territorial limit bet-

ween Cantabria and the Vasque Country, climbs up through the Baltezana's channel to the Helguera's height, and after

going through the wooded Valley of Otaes, it gets to Santullan. From here, through Samano, we reach Castro Urdiales

coming in from the Brazomar beach.

The Castro Urdiales' medieval architectonic collection, placed by the harbour, is made of the Gothic church of Sta. Maria de

la Asuncion, the lighthouse castle, The Old Bridge and Santa Ana's chapel.

The surroundings of the Harbor and Puebla Vieja, of great sailor taste, are the good places to enjoy the fish and seafood from

the Cantabrian Sea, especially the anchovies, it any of its many typical taverns. The Seafront Walk and the center of the Village

shows a northern landlord view, with some houses, villas and peculiar buildings with modernistic style like Royal Hotel, the

Palace of the Chelines or the Ocharan's one.

The city counts the Pilgrim's shelter and a complete hotel offer.

For more than a thousand years now, Santo Toribios

Monastery keeps within its walls one of the most

    appreciated Christian: the Lignum Crucis.

The biggest known piece of the Holy Cross, was

    broughtto Leoninthe VcenturyfromHolyLand, moved

afterwards to this hidden refuge in the IX century, to keep it

    from desecration.

So, St. James pilgrims of the Coast Route, turned into crucenosnow in their

lebaniego journey, abandon for a few days the constant proximity of the Cantabria sea

replacing it by theimpressive guard of thePicos deEuro pas limestonepeaks to go into the

very Herat of Liebanas Valley kneeling down the Sacred Relic of the Holy Cross.

Based in the ancestral tradition, and due to the Papal Bull granted by Julio II in 1512, came

to confirm an ancient practice living this Monastery the category of holy place for pilgrim-

age. From now on, when Saint Toribio coincides in Sunday, it would be considered by the

Church as a Holy Year, offering full indulgence to every pilgrim that attends, gaining the

Jubileo and obtaining the forgiveness to all committed faults.

This outstanding condition was the leading role in a huge and without precedents public-

ity campaign by the Cantabria Government in the last Lebaniego Holy Year 2006/2007 ,

With a very sea taste, San Vicente's village is very well

known by its food offer, soured directly from the fish

market, that feeds of seafood and fresh fiches many of

    the local restaurants.

The Pilgrim's shelter is placed in the Claretiano's

The descent, that will demand some attentionin some places, in order not to loose the trace, finishes in Lenea, where it is keep one of themost valuable artistic jewels of the region:

Santa Maria de Lebea's church (X Century).Odd example of Visigoth art in the Cantabrianregion, includes decorative elements of Celticand Asturias influence, and arranges guidedvisits.

    Options from Lebea:

Leaving the village, just reside the bridge thatcrossesDevariver,we havewalked15 KmfromLaFuente, andwe willbeat 8,5KmfromPotes.From here, three options exist: the first one is walking along the road the first 3,5 Km andpass to step again the path in Castro-Cillorigo.It is the least demanding but maybe the most

dangerous because of the narrownest of theroad. It is recommended to be extremely cau-tious, and to use security cloths.

The second option is a mountain path put upsigns between Lebea and Castro calledCamino Alto, that passesclosetotheriver butto major height. We take the beginning of theway close to the last houses of the village and we initiate the ascension for the curves ofPea Ventosa. Later, we advance a section inparalell to the river up to the electric tower,

The third option is more mountain oriented, andwillallowus toknowvillageslike Allende,Cabaes and Pendes, avoiding traffic and enjo-ying great views of Liebana's Valley.

The differents options can be summarize likethis::

Option 1. Walk 3,5 Km by the narrow passroad or preferably Camino Alto up to Castro-Cillorigo, where we will retake the paths and

( Total stage LaFuente-Potes : 23,5 Km + 4km to SantoToribio ).Option 2. Go back a few meters along theroad from Lebea up to Allende's crossing, and climb towards Cabaes ( 5,5 Km.) follo- wing the signposting. Sleep there ( Privateshelter ) and getting into Potes and Sto.Toribio in the next journey.

    (Total stage La Fuente-Cabaes:20,5Km)+Stage 3

Stage 1 : From San Vicente de la Barquerato La Fuente ( Lamasn )(27,5 km.).

In the first stage we will move away fromthe Cantabria caostline leaving behind San Vicente's marsh in south direction, going

throughLaAcebosa,up theAltodela Rejoyaandbeginning the downhill to meet Rio Nansa fromBielva. The path goes through quiet ruralsurroundings that will progressively get us closeto the mountains, especially after crossing theArrudo Bridge, in Herrerias County.

Alter leaving behind Cades, where we Hill find avery interesting iron mine, we will go uphill to afew visited mountain road, walking along theriver up to Quintanilla Lamason crossing, wherewe can chose between various hotels with diffe-rentpricesina smalllocalvillagewithgreatchar-ming, or continue a soft going up of about three

kilometres to La Fuente, where we find the pil-grim's shelter.

In the proximities, the Romanic church of LaFuente, is of great interest, from XIII Century.Beside it, over the a hose wall, we can find " LaPareja de Lamasn ", a peculiar sculpture of XVII century, with an also peculiar plate dated1625.

Pilgrimage is a long journey or search of great moral significance. Sometimes, it is a journeyto a shrine of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. So it is a personal commitment ofthe pilgrim to provide him or herself with whatever is needed (food, shelter, etc.) to reachthe goal.

In order to get to the Cantabrias Cluster of Pilgrim Shelters is mandatory to show the dif-ferent Pilgrims Oficial Credentials.

To be considered a Pilgrim it is necessary to travel on foot, by bike, or by horseback.

Credentials are given by Church, and Friends of Camino de Santiago or Camino LebaniegoAssociations. Cancillera del Obispado: Plaza de Eguino y Trecu n1, Santander. Telephone:942 36 73 95.

The credential doesn`t grant any right itself. It just identifies its owner as a Pilgrim. Thisdocument can be withdrawn due to a bad use of it or non-fulfilment of the rules.

All the conditions and particular schedules of each shelter will be set up by their responsible.

The person responsible of the shelter`s criteria of admission will prevail considering the per-son needed most. Usually walking pilgrims have priority over those who travel by bike or byhorseback.

Groups travelling with vehicle assistance have no priority at all, and will only be admitted ifthere are rooms left following the criteria of the person responsible.

    Pilgrims routesto Santo Toribio

The uneven topography of the Picos de

Europa and of the Cantabrian Range geo-graphically demarcs Liebana's Valley and

determine the access to Saint Toribio from the nearregions of Asturias, Castilla and Leon. In spite ofthis, there are many historical references that

endorse the existence of tour main pilgrim's routesto Saint Toribio Monastery.

Recently signposted as PR (small tour routes) insideLiebana's path network, these routes flow throughdifferent ways, depending on the origin zone:

Castillian Route: with historical background in anold Roman road, this path would be the extensin

to Libana, also called "Va de Burejo", that go upriver of the same name to Dehesas de Montejo,

where the roman archeological site of El Otero isplaced. The logical continuation through Cervera de

Pisuerga, will face the access to Liebana fromPiedrasluengas or from Sierras Albas to descent byCabezn de Libana to Potes, not without stoppingby Santa Mara la Real de Piasca.

Leonesa Route: the borderline with Leon Region is markedby the steep hills of Pea Prieta surroundings and the central

mountain mass of Picos de Europa, with heights that fre-

quently overpass the 2000 meters. The main path would beSan Glorio Pass and World have high middle age originwhen Libana belonged to Leon Kingdom and was a

    very populated area.

Asturias Route: The most complex, as it goesthrough Picos de Europa. It went by

Cabrales' Council through the CarouPath finishing in Sotres, and from heresurrounding the Oriental MountainMass through the north path getting

into Bejes, to cross Pelea's cut anddescending to the valley fromCabaes and Pendes.

Coastal Route ( Liebana's Path ): TheLiebana's turnoff from the Coastal Route to

Santiago begins in Hortigal, in Val de SanVicente's county, to ascend by Herrerias, Lamasonand Pearrubia, climbing down from Cicera toLebea and going up Deva's river to Potes.

CANTABRIA'S LINK WITH THE FRENCH ROUTE. BESAYA'S PATH

The old Roman Road that linked Castilla with the sea in Portius Blendium

( nowadays Suances ), was from the beginning an important communica-tion way between Cantabria and the center of the country. With the

peak of the French Path from XII Century, this route World mainly beused as link between the main Cantabric abbeys and the Saint

Jacques Route by Castilla, joining in in Carrion de los Condes.

Merging the Santander Cathedral with Santillana del Mar, the Route

World go up Besaya's river passing by Torrelavega , through a path withlots of Romanesque art, a the great church of Santa Mara de Yermonear Riocorvo, San Facundo and SanPrimitivo's church in Sili, San

Cosme and San Damin's churchin Pie de Concha, or the extraor-

dinary Romanesque CollegiateChurch of Cervatos, in the

    limit with Castilian land.
