GLADIATOR TRAININGRutgers wrestling goes through a combination of workouts they call “Gladiator Training.”

One of the goals of “Gladiator Training” is to create functional strength in unconventional positions. The tools utilized for trainingare: four 250-pound tractor tires, an eight pound hammer, a bungee cord harness, an 18-pound stick, and a sand pit. The stu-dent-athletes are placed into stations that require them to perform exercises with the various tools. The exercises vary fromflipping the tractor tires and then jumping in and out of them, hitting the tires with the hammer, doing sprints against thebungee harness in the sand pit, and attempting to drive one of your teammates out of the sand pit while you both are holdingon to the stick.

The second part of the training puts the teammates from each weight class together. The wrestlers use their teammate asthe resistance for the exercise. The partners must complete:

Buddy Cleans: the wrestler picks up his teammate, holding him perpendicular to the ground, raises him to his head, and lowershim to his waist. Buddy Crunches: wrap your legs around your teammate’s waist while your teammate is standing and com-plete crunches. Bear Drag: one partner lays on his back and holds on to his teammate’s neck. The wrestler on all fours mustdrag his teammate on the ground while maintaining proper bear crawl form. Hip Switch: the wrestler picks up his teammate ina belly to back position, loads him onto one hip and then switches him to other hip, never allowing him to touch the ground.Kamikaze Run: each athlete jogs four lines of approximately 20 yards, sprints one line and jogs three lines, sprints two linesand jogs one, etc., until all four lines are sprints.

Third-year Rutgers head coach ScottGoodale previews the 2009-10 season.

On what he thinks of his team entering the season.“I like where we are at entering the season. I think we had a reallygood preseason. We prepared for early November and getting readyfor our upcoming season. November is a tough month for us. I thinkwe are exactly where we want to be. We are certainly not peakingright now and wrestling our best but that will come as we go therewill be peak and valleys during the course of the season.”

On his induction into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Famethis year.“I think it’s a reflection of what I did at the high school level. It’s agreat honor and a humbling experience. I grew up wrestling in SouthJersey. It’s exciting for my family. It is a great honor and I am going inwith a class that is pretty special.”

On what he sees out of transfers Billy Ashnault and Daryl Cocozzo.“They are everything we expected them to be. I fully expect them tobe competing at a extremely high level come March. I think they willbe right in the thick of things. Its hard for me to sit here and say thatthey will be at the top of the podium and be a national champbecause I don’t know that but dealing with them the first couple ofmonths they have high goals and being on the podium at the nationaltournament is one of them. They are doing everything right at themoment. It’s a hard thing to be disciplined in every single area notjust wrestling but with their academics and their social life. They aredoing a really good job and I do not know how many people know thisbut Daryl Cocozzo worked his tail off just to get into RutgersUniversity. He did everything he needed to do. He is doing a great jobtraining just like Billy. Billy’s biggest thing was controlling his weightand he is down the weight already so we are excited about that. These two guys are everything that we expected. They can flat outwrestle. We expect a lot out of them and they are going to contributeto us for sure.”

On adding assistant coach CoryCooperman to his staff this year.“I think it’s the direction we are goingand what (Rutgers Director ofAthletics) Tim Pernetti and the wholeathletic department have done. Theyhave allowed us to attract top notchcoaches. We got Brandon Beckertwo years ago who is a three-timeAll-American from Indiana. Now weget Cory Cooperman who is a three-time All-American from Lehigh whowas at Cornell University for the pastthree years. He helped producenational champions during his timeat Cornell. Cory is a dynamic kid whocan wrestle. He has a different styleof wresting that our kids are attracted to. It’s a funky, fun and excitingstyle to watch. He brings a lot of great things from Cornell. They areone of the best teams in the country they were ranked second at onepoint during the year. We are getting some of the ideas he broughtfrom Cornell and we are putting them into our practices and in ourpreparation for the season. Obviously, getting someone like him tocompliment Brandon and of course John Leonardis – who has beenwith me since day one - I like our staff right now. I like everythingabout it. I think it’s one of the best young staffs in the country. Theseguys are passionate about what we are trying to do.”

On if the success of hie program has surprised him, being that heis only entering his third year at RU.“It might of moved a bit quicker than I thought, which is a good thing. It is exactly where I want to be right now . We have five guys with anational preseason ranking. We have a team that believes theyshould be knocking off nationally-ranked kids and that was what theplan was. Everyone said it was a four or five-year plan and heck Iwanted to win yesterday. I understand there is a process to this andeveryday it is a challenge and these guys and this staff want to get tothe highest level of this sport in college wrestling. We are doing allthe right things but it is a process . I understand the process. I justthink right now we got guys that truly believe they can win and notonly win but in a big spot and win on a big stage.“

On giving Scott Winston a redshirt this season, who finished lastseason ranked No. 12 in the 157-weight class.“As good as he is, he still can improve. He needs to get better. Westill feel we are a couple years away from really making an impacton the national scene. We reconstructed the whole program whenwe got here (2007-08). It takes four or five years to get to thatlevel. The reason we are redshirting Winston and why we redshirt-ed Lamar (Brown) last year is because it is another year of gettingbetter and another year of understanding our system and matur-ing. He needs to get better on the mat. He needs to be a mat wres-tle. Most of the time you redshirt a guy it is during his freshmanyear. We decided to play Winston last year and he was a big rea-son why we won a school-record 20 matches. He has been a hugepart of the rise of this program. He has put us at a level where peo-ple recognize Rutgers wrestling right now. His success helpedRutgers receive national attention.”

Rutgers Head Coach Scott Goodalebreaks down the Scarlet Knights2009-10 squad by weight class:

125“This is probably our deepest class even

though our starter from last year (MattFusco) will redshirt. Joey Langel was ahigh-school national champ from Howel.Vinny Dellefave comes in as one of thebest New Jersey High School wrestlers.Mike DeMarco has wrestled in theEIWA tournament the last two years. Those three guys are very competitive. They have some great credentials. Allthree are in the mix. We feel comfort-able with them. I don’t know who will getthe nod yet.”

133“Billy Ashnault will probably start. Hehas clearly been the front runner. Hequalified for NCAAs two years ago. Hetransferred from Lock Haven. He under-stands everything. He is a very good pin-ner, like David Greenwald. He has won inbig spots before. Ashnault will probablybe backed up by Cullen Isenberg.Isenberg comes with great credentialshe placed at the national prep tourna-ment last year. He is a good wrestler. Hemay be forced to wrestle because weare not really deep at that weight.”

141“Trevor Melde is a clear cut favorite forthat spot. He cracked the national rank-ings at one point last year. He alreadyhas some good wins against somenationally ranked guys. He has had agood preseason. He seems very focusedfor a breakout year. He is workingtowards becoming an All-American. Wewill have two freshmen backing him up -Luke Rigoglioso or Tom Hogan. Hoganis more of an athlete. Those two guys willdevelop during their time here.”

149“David Greenwald is our frontrunner. Hehas had some huge wins for us. He is agreat pinner. He has done everythingright. Kellen Bradley will back him up.

Dave Seidenberg will reshirt. Bradleyhas some big wins. He is a fifth-year sen-ior with a lot of experience. We are pret-ty deep at that class.”

157“Daryl Cocozzo will be able to competefor the Scarlet Knight starting at theMidlands. He is one of the best guys inour locker room. He trains hard andcomes from a great program. He is aguy that we will count on in the secondsemester. Since Daryl can’t go to startthe season, it will be Jack Barrett orBraden Turner.”

165.“With (Scott) Winston redshirting thisyear it is down to two guys – MattRigoglioso and Gregory Zannetti. Greghad a number of wins backing upWinston. Both have done a good job inthe offseason. Both went to UniversityNationals. They were matches awayfrom placing at University Nationals. Idon’t know who the guy is going to beright now. I like where we are at there. Ithink we have two guys there that wres-tle hard. They are extremely conditionedathletes who like to push the pace. Thatis a spot we need to win at for us tohave a successful season.”

174“174 is an extremely balanced weightclass. We have two kids who I believe willhave great futures here at Rutgers. DanRinaldi and Dan Seidenberg were in thesame weight classes during their highschool careers and never wrestled eachother. They have great credentials.Rinaldi had a great redshirt campaignlast year. Seidenberg probably has themost upside of anybody in our lockerroom. That will be a great match.Arguably our best match.”

184“Jesse Boyden dropped down from 197and made the weight. He didn’t get anychances to compete but he worked histail off to come back from his injury. AlexPagnotta will probably redshirt.”

197“Lamar Brown is the frontrunner. Thisneeds to be a breakout year for him. Hehas done things right. He understandswhat we want and what he needs to do.He is preparing to be in the running atNCAAs. Hopefully he can achieve his goalof making the podium at the NCAAs. Itwouldn’t be disappointing if he didn’treach that goal. Chris Orzechowski willprobably back him up. Sam Kuntz willmost likely redshirt.”

HWT“D.J. Russo will be the starter for us. Heis like having a Mariano Rivera in yourlineup - a guy who closes out the lineupfor you. He clinched a number of match-es for us. He is a great pinner and thatis six points in a dual meet. That is huge.He can handle the pressure and is verygood in that situation. He has done agreat job at handling his weight. I trulybelieve he wants to be a national cham-pion. He is getting pushed by SeanDeDeyn who was a very good backup forus last year.”

Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of NewJersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on theRutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington.

Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American publicresearch universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning expe-rience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems;diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the peo-ple of New Jersey.

President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate edu-cation at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expand-ed access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popularFirst-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no morethan 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty.

Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include:• Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association.• The Rutgers Faculty Traveling Seminar, an annual week-long tour of New Jersey for new faculty.• The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the

university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and thepromise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers.

• Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-levelacademic program, a Ph.D. in childhoodstudies – the first in the nation in thisemerging discipline.

• Establishment of the School of Public Affairs

and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s firstnew school in more than three decades.

A BRIEF HISTORYRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate andgraduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and NewBrunswick.

Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 asQueen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in NewBrunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal artsinstitution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, ColonelHenry Rutgers.

Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the RutgersScientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences camewith the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School ofEngineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. Theprecursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now theErnest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now part of the School of Arts andSciences) in 1918, and the School of Education in 1924.

In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number ofschools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women whenthe New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when UniversityCollege was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates underthe GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designat-ed Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey.

A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. Anambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational resi-dential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, theGraduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and librarystudies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work.Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged.

In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organizationcomprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 180 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sci-ences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve lifeboth in New Jersey and around the world.

A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions andstrengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences.

With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than10,000 students each year, and has more than 350,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jerseycounties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century.Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university's goals for the future include the continued

provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
