It’s almost July. I can

hardly believe how

quickly time flies. It must

be all those mystery

classes that I am plan-

ning. They are sooo

notice there is only 2

weeks, 14 days or 336 hours be-

tween classes to plan, stitch and

write the next one, let alone get

the supplies here.

I’m having a great time and hope

you are too. I look back at the past

5 years. There have been so many

adventures and changes and good

friends. I’m excited to see what the

next 5 years will bring.

This is the start of a new look for

our newsletter. Each month you will

receive an email with a link to

download the new newsletter. This

means I can share more fun stuff

with you and should you choose to,

you can save the issues!

See you soon.

Ruth Schmuff, Owner

day with. She will work with you individually to select threads and

stitches for any project you choose.

Beadazzled) and Julia will help you make it

your own. Class is from 11-5 each day. We

provide lunch and desert and a guaranteed

good time.

how do these

mystery classes work?

I know, it’s confusing. What

exactly is a mystery class?

A mystery class is just like a

mystery in a book; it un-

folds in chapters. With each

chapter more of the mystery

(how are we going to stitch

this canvas) is revealed?

We meet pretty much every

other Sunday afternoon (unless

the classroom is booked with another

teacher) and review the twists, turns

and fun of the current lesson. Class is

from 1 to 3 pm. Can’t join us in per-

son? No problem, we will ship to you.

The instructions have full color photos

of the canvas stitched to date along

with complete instructions and dia-

grams.

I also post lots of pictures on my blog

www.NotYourGrandmother’s Needle-

point.com the Sunday evening after

class.

And so that you don’t feel left out

missing the in class shenanigans we

set up a online stitching group at

www.stitcherie.com. There is a

discussion for each class!

We had a great time in the first Garden

Party class. We tackled the backgrounds of

the 4 corners.

Circles in the background of the section

with the circles. Hearts in the back-

ground of the section with the hearts.

Flowers in the background of the section

with the flowers and squiggles in the

squiggly sections. What could be more

fun? The threads are yummy col-

ors in silk and metallics.

Yes, there is a good amount of

compensation but everyone rose

to the challenge, even my almost

beginner. She did a great job!

What will we do in the next

class? I’m stitching it now and it

is sooooo fun. Gotta love it. This

is one of those pieces that is

coming together easily so far.

Want to join

the party?

It’s not too late. Give us a calland we’ll send you everything

you need to get you caught up.Canvas, stitch guide(s), threads

etc. From then you will be inthe queue and we’ll send yourfuture lessons with everyone

else’s.

What’s the next mystery? Broom parking!

Can’t you just imagine the fun we will have with this canvas? Classes

are September 23rd, October 7 and 21, and November 11. The cost

for the class is the cost of the canvas $180 plus $15 per lesson and

the price of the threads, beads, crystals etc for that lesson.

Canvas design area is 9.75 x 14 handpainted on 18ct mono. You will

need 15 x 18 stretcher bars.

looking for something with a slower pace?

Row of Ladies by Lee

We also offer Mystery With a Twist projects. These work just like the

regular Mystery Classes except you don’t really know when the next

lesson is coming. I fit these in between the regular mysteries. At first

I thought the lessons would be at 4-6 week intervals. They are really

about 3 months apart. We have had 3 lessons for this mystery with

#4 to ship very soon. There are no in-person lessons. Everyone is an outpatient for this class.

The cost for the class is the cost of the canvas $110 plus $15 per lesson and the price of the threads, beads, crystals etc

for that lesson.

Canvas design area is 10 x 16 handpainted on 18ct mono. You will need 14 x 20 stretcher bars.

Can I order a mystery class that is complete?

Certainly, we are happy to kit any of our past mysteries. Canvas, complete stitch guide with all the threads, beads, crys-

tals and gizmos can be packed and shipped to your home or office anytime you want. Just say the word.

why this works

Generally the rules of needlepoint

tell us not to put crazy big stitches

in the background. Big stitches

come forward, little stitches go

back.

Yes, that is totally true. The Flower

Background Stitch works in Gar-

den Party Heart Mod Collage be-

cause we aren’t really trying to

make anything look realistic. It

isn’t water that needs to be under

and behind a sailboat it’s just pat-

tern. I think of this entire design

as snippets of fabric put together.

Another of the rules of needle-

point tells us that we shouldn’t

compensate a stitch to death. I

think I only stitched 2 entire flow-

ers stitched in this square, all the

rest are partials. Again it works

because it is supposed to just be a

pattern, nothing real.

A similar stitch and concept was

used on Maggie’s Poinsettia Lady,

only this time it was RANDOM!

Flower Background - This is just one of many flower background patterns.

Brenda Hart has numerous ones in her books. I love them all and have used

them. This one is an adapation of a background that Sheena of Sheena’s

Sweet Stitches developed. I put my own spin on it for the background of the

flower square on Garden Party Heart Mod Collage.

Working on 18ct and using 2 ply of silk blended with 2 ply of Accentuate the

flowers are stitched first. The use of a laying tool is a must! Next the

Smyrna’s fill the center of each flower worked in 2 ply silk only. Finally the

dots are French Knots worked with 4 ply Accentuate. Each French Knot is

wrapped TWICE around a size 24 Tapestry Needle and goes up and down in

the same hole. This allows them to sit on the canvas like little jewels - Thank

you Orna Willis for that trick!
