Through the Communion of Saints we help one another achieve sanctity.” [The Roman Missal] According to the Catholic Catechism, “This perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity—this communion of life and love with the Trinity, with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed—is called ‘heaven.’ Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness.” [CCC, 1024]

The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Soul’s) Saturday, November 2nd, 2013 The Church, after celebrating the feast of All Saints, today prays for all whom, in the purifying suffering of purgatory, await the day when they will join in their company. The celebration of the Mass, which re-enacts the sacrifice of Calvary, has always been the principal means by which the Church fulfills the great commandment of charity toward the dead. We can also relieve their sufferings through our prayers, suffrages, and penances. Even after death, links with our fellow travelers are not broken. [The Roman Missal] “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. [CCC 1030] “The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.” [CCC 1031] “And may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK HIGHLIGHTS VOCATION AS GIFT FROM GOD October 11, 2019 WASHINGTON – The Catholic Church in the United States will celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week, November 3-9, 2019. During this week, dioceses across the U.S. lead the effort in parishes and schools to uphold and encourage the fostering of vocations among the faithful and to pray for those currently discerning a call to marriage, ordained ministry, or consecrated life. In his message for the 2019 World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that unlike a secular career, a vocation is a gift born from God’s own initiative: “The Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God into our freedom; it is not a ‘cage’ or burden to be borne. On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God encounters us and invites us to be a part of a great undertaking.” Whereas choosing a career requires much “doing” – such as the accomplishment of various tasks and goals – vocational discernment requires much “being.” At its core, vocational discernment is a process of self-discovery. Assisted by divine grace, each person is invited by the Lord to receive the gift of a specific vocation whereby they manifest God’s love in a particular way to the outside world. In the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony, the husband and wife image the Trinity by their communion of love that produces new life; in ordained ministry, priests and deacons are called to minister in the person of Christ, the High Priest and Servant; and in consecrated life, each member is called to bear Christ’s love through a particular charism. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., of Newark, and Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, echoed Pope Francis's definition of vocation as a gift. “Discerning a vocation is not the same as completing a checklist. It is a process of learning how to receive the greatest gift God could offer us – the gift of living in accordance with our true identity as a son or daughter of God.” For those currently discerning a vocation, Cardinal Tobin suggested that one always stay close to the Blessed Mother. “Entrust your vocation to Mary, the Mother of all Vocations. She will always direct you to her Son and intercede for you along the path the Lord has for you.” [Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. In 1997, the celebration was moved to the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and in 2014, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to engage Catholic schools and colleges more effectively…]

Saints Simon and Jude Saint Corner Jude is so named by Luke and Acts. Matthew and Mark call him Thaddeus. He is not mentioned elsewhere in the Gospels, except of course where all the apostles are mentioned. Scholars hold that he is not the author of the Letter of Jude. Actually, Jude had the same name as Judas Iscariot. Evidently because of the disgrace of that name, it was shortened to “Jude” in English. Simon is mentioned on all four lists of the apostles. On two of them he is called “the Zealot.” The Zealots were a Jewish sect that represented an extreme of Jewish nationalism…. .It is a reminder that we cannot receive too often. Holiness does not depend on human merit, culture, personality, effort, or achievement. It is entirely God’s creation and gift. St. Jude is the Patron Saint of Desperate Situations.

SIRACH 35:12-14, 16-18

The Lord is not deaf to the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint.

A few generations back, the big social phobia was that Big Brother might be watching us. These days, it’s even easier for folks to get their hands on up-to-date information about where we are, what we’re doing, what we value, and how healthy we are. Big Brother doesn’t have to watch us anymore. Thanks to social media, online buying, and wall-to-wall technology, we volunteer our life stories cheerfully. Wisdom teachers like Ben Sira, author of Sirach, didn’t exactly envision God as the divine Eye-in-the-Sky keeping tabs on our whereabouts. Spying on the human race would be a rather pedestrian entertainment, given that most of what we do is too boring to mention. Have you ever tried to remember what you occupied your time all day and come up empty? What captures God’s undivided attention, according to the sage, is injustice against the poor and powerless. When the helpless ones cry out, God is listening. Perhaps you and I should listen too.

» Make a list of ten struggling populations that have God’s full attention right now. What can you do to demonstrate that you hear their cry?

2 TIMOTHY 4:6-8, 16-18

And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

In the language of the Bible, the poor are often described as strangers, widows, and orphans. They were those who didn’t have the obvious protections of society on their side, in other words. Without male citizens to represent them and offer them a mantle of security, such individuals were fair game for exploitation. St. Paul did not fit into that category, as a man with dual citizenship in Jewish and Roman society. He was also a Pharisee, which gave him moral status within his religious group. Finally, he was a skilled tentmaker, literate, and a leader within the Christian community. Paul was, in most respects, a person of some real authority. Yet he surrendered it all to follow the Messiah who died on a cross. Paul, a lion among men, allowed himself to be made meek to slip through the needle’s eye in pursuit of his Lord. He chose some women as his coworkers, mentored other men’s sons as his own. Paul cast his lot with the lowly-trusting that God would one day lift him up to glory.

» How do you use the authority given to you to lift up the lowly?

LUKE 18:9-14

“The one who humbles himself will be-exalted.”

If you’re a fan of movies like "Groundhog Day," “Lost in Translation," "Ghostbusters," and “Caddyshack," you may be one of millions who can’t get enough of actor Bill Murray. Anyone who makes us laugh these days might qualify for the short list for canonization. It turns out Murray does more than make us laugh. For those ordinary people who have “Bill Murray Stories” to tell, he’s also a source of inspiration. Dozens of websites and at least one recent documentary gather urban legends of Bill Murray popping up on the playing field, at a corner restaurant, or in the middle of your living room during a private party. He doesn’t come to perform but to simply share the experience. When people have been "Murrayed,"what they express most is gratitude that a famous man chooses to present himself as a common one. Humility remains one of the most paradoxically impressive virtues any of us can practice. Just as God becomes flesh and walks among us, genuine greatness has no need to assert itself.

» Name leaders, local or global, who’ve used their authority without insisting on special recognition. How does the arrogant use of power make a person smaller?
