WELCOME BACK
A warm welcome back to Term 2. We hope that all families had
a great break as we return for Term 2. Welcome to any new
families starting with us this week!
STAFF STEAM THROUGH STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY
Our staff took the opportunity to learn more about STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS and Mathematics)
on Monday. Staff were able to learn more about coding, video
editing and hear about some of the ways schools and teachers
are trying to ignite student interest in these curriculum areas.
Thank you to Mr Burke-Smith, Mrs Curtis and Mrs Ross for
leading the day.
STAFF CHANGES
Mr Tim Beaven and Mrs Kylie South take up their principal
positions this term and we wish them well in their new schools.
Ms Candice Morphett will be our relieving Deputy Principal
(Head of Primary) for Term 2 whilst a new Deputy Principal is
appointed through the merit selection process.
Mr Josef Burke-Smith will be the relieving Stage 3 Assistant
Principal for Term 2.
We also welcome Mrs Rachel Frith to the Instructional Leader
Position as part of the Early Action for Success Program.
ANZAC CEREMONIES
Thank you to the students, parents and families who came
along to represent Rutherford Public School at the Maitland
ANZAC ceremony last Wednesday.
A big thank you to Mrs Thomas for all her organisation in our
school ANZAC service which was held last Term. It is very
important for our students to learn more about the ANZAC
traditions, the futility of war and the ongoing hope for a peaceful
future.
Three of our student leaders will accompany Ms Morphett to
Rutherford Technology High School this Thursday to represent
our school at their ANZAC service.
BREAK-IN
Unfortunately our school canteen was the target of a group of
youths over the holidays. The youths gained access to the
canteen and took a small amount of stock. It appears that the
group of males are the same as the group that targeted the
school last year. Police have been given CCTV footage of the
break-in and we hope to have the youths caught soon. Please
be on the lookout for any suspicious activity around our school
and report any concerns to Maitland Police on 4934 0200.
CYBER SAFETY LADY
The Cyber Safety Lady, Leonie Smith is coming soon to
Rutherford Public School…..and you're invited.
A parent information session will begin at 6:00pm on
Wednesday 30th May. Due to the nature of Leonie's parent
presentation, strictly no children are permitted to be in the
room. Please keep the date free!
Details on how to register will be published soon!
PLAYGROUP - PLAY TO LEARN
A reminder that our 0-6 years playgroup operates with the
support of Hunter Prelude from our school hall each Tuesday
morning from 9:15am to 11:15am. All children are welcome to
come along and be part of the fun! Please see Rasna Gandhi
or the school office for more details on how to register.
LITTLE DRAGONS P-K PROGRAM
The first intake of Little Dragons for our Kindergarten transition
program will start this Thursday 3rd May. Students must be
enrolling at Rutherford Public School for Kindergarten 2019 to
be eligible for a place in the program.
Please register at the office.
MOTHER’S DAY BREAKFAST
Our Mum’s are invited to come along to a Mother’s Day
breakfast on Friday 11th May at 8:00am. There will be bacon
and egg sandwiches and a range of activities to enjoy. As
numbers are expected to be high, we respectfully ask that only
mothers and direct female carers come along on the morning.
Grandparents will be invited to come along in Term 4 as part of
Senior’s Week.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
Thank you to the P&C who have organised a range of beautiful
gifts for our students to purchase. The stall will be open on
WEDNESDAY 9th May and students will visit the stall with their
class.
Gifts cost $6 each.
Any left over gifts will be sold in front of the hall on Thursday
and Friday morning.
NAPLAN
All students in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN tests soon.
Students should not be overly nervous about these tests. They
are aimed at helping the school identify individual student
strengths and areas for development, as well as whole-school
need. Parents are asked to limit any absences from school
next week.
Any parents wishing to seek clarification on the testing program
can see Ms Morphett (Deputy Principal/Head of Primary) this
week.
FREE BREAKFAST - Students in Years 3 and 5 can enjoy
FREE cereal and toast on the NAPLAN testing mornings to
ensure they are fuelled and ready to sit the tests!

ICAS Digital Technologies test will sit the test next Tuesday 8th
May 2018. Students need to be at school by 8:00am in the

SAVE THE DATE
National Walk Safely to School Day will be held on Friday 18
May 2018 in all primary schools across Australia.
This national initiative aims to encourage children to lead a
healthier, more active lifestyle by simply including a walk at the
beginning, at lunch time and at the end of each day. The event
also promotes reduced car-dependency, greater use of public
transport, cleaner air, improved diets and road safety to primary
school children throughout Australia.
Please help us encourage children to build regular walking in
their daily routine by walking to, during, and from school. More
details will be provided as we get closer to the date.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA
All schools in Australia, including Rutherford Public School,
participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on
School Students with Disability. The national data collection is
an annual collection that counts the number of school students
with disability, and the level of reasonable educational
adjustment they are provided with. This national data collection
collects information about students with disability in a
consistent, reliable and systematic way. The national data
collection draws on and reflects the ongoing work teachers and
education staff do to support students with disability. If you
would like any further information around the NCCD, or do not
wish your child to be included in the data collection, please
contact the school. Additional information about the national
data collection is available on the Australian Government
Department of Education’s website at:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/disability-
learning-and-support/personalised-support-for-learning/national
-disability-data-collection
AEROBICS
Congratulations to the Pink Jets who won a gold medal at their
first competition of the year in Newcastle. The girls looked
fantastic and will continue to train hard for their next competition
in May.
Thank you to our valued sponsors, Club Maitland City, MSP
Photography and also our enthusiastic cheer squad of
supporters.
Ms Ledwos, Aerobics Coach
STEWART HOUSE DONATION DRIVE ENVELOPES
Stewart House donation drive envelopes were sent home last
term. Families are asked to place a donation of at least $2
inside, complete their details and return the envelope to school
by Friday 11th May.
By returning your envelope with at least $2 inside, your family
will go in the draw to win a $4,000 family holiday!
SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION FEE
All families in NSW public schools are asked to make a
contribution to the ongoing costs associated in providing a
quality education. Unlike some schools, Rutherford Public
School does not have text book fees. All families will be
invoiced for the one-off fee and it would be appreciated if the
fee/s could be paid by the end of Term 2. The 2018 school
contribution fee is: $45 per child or $90 per family.

Care Packages Last term, many of the Stage 1 classes prepared care packages for some of the servicemen and women who are currently deployed overseas in the army, navy and air force. After a long delay in postage, we were excited to hear that our packages arrived late last week and were greatly appreciated by the troops. This was such a rewarding experience for our students who wrote letters, created artworks and chose some delicious treats to send in the packages.
News from 2M 2M have been learning about coding. Mrs South visited our classroom and showed us her Ozobots. We had fun creating codes for the Ozobot to follow.
News from 2D and 2G 2D and 2G spent the last two weeks of Term 1 learning about Les Darcy. We have also been learning about QR codes and how they can link us to valuable information. Please scan the QR codes below to listen to our scholars read their information reports on an important part of Maitland’s history.
Weblands Street Rutherford 2320 Phone: 4932 5900 Email: [email protected]
TRASH OR TREASURE?
This term students from 1B, 1J, 2J, 2M and 2Z will be participating in a trial incorporating project-based learning concepts.
Students will be immersed in authentic, real world learning tasks using high-level critical problem-solving skills in order to
delve into the world of sustainability. A recent trip to Reverse Garbage in Sydney assisted us to prepare our learning
environments for this exciting journey. See below how classrooms have been transformed using recycled materials. This
journey will culminate with the students holding a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Expo.
PBL BADGES
Congratulations to all Stage 1 students who received their PBL badge at their class celebration in Week 11 of last term. It is
fantastic that so many students commit to following our Positive Behaviour for Learning values.
Keep up the great effort everyone!
Weblands Street Rutherford 2320 Phone: 4932 5900 Email: [email protected]
Welcome back to a new term! Stage 2 have an exciting and jam-packed term in store for Year 3 and 4. Be sure to
read the Stage 2 newsletter each fortnight so you stay up to date with everything happening in our classrooms.
What are we studying this term?
In Stage 2, students will participate in exciting new enquiry-based learning (this means students will learn to become more self
-directed, responsible learners) that will focus on engaging and moving our students into 21st century learning styles. We will
be looking to include a range of engaging new technologies into our studies also. Our geography and science unit will look
closely at the environment (local and an environment in Asia), as well as the flora and fauna that occupies these spaces. Our
study of the environment will flow into our literacy component also.
Rich Culture
This term, students will have the opportunity to continue with Baa Waa girls, learning about the rich culture of the Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people. The girls will work hard this term with Amie and other members of the community to put
together a short film that will highlight the students growing knowledge of their culture. Watch this space!
Excursion
Coming up in Week 9 will be an excursion to the Civic Theatre in Newcastle to see ‘The 78-Storey
Treehouse’ live on stage. The popular novels by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton will be a strong
focus in all Stage 2 classes this term and the children will then have the opportunity to watch the live
stage adaptation in Newcastle. Keep your eye on school bags, as notes will be coming home soon!
Sport
Sport will continue every Friday so please send children in sports uniform.

Join the P&C for a fantastic night of trivia, raffles and games to help raise funds for our children. Grab some friends and book a table of
8, or we can place you on a table. It’s a great way to meet new people!
$15 per person! BYO nibblies & drinks!
Email [email protected] to secure your table, or phone 0403292520. We have limited tables available so don’t leave it until the last
minute!
This is an adults only event.
BELL TIMES
Rutherford Public School have two separate play periods for the Infants and Primary students. This will maximise
playground space and ensure children have plenty of room to move.
Please note that there is NO SUPERVISION before 8:40am each morning.
Our bell times and organisation for Term 1 2018 are as follows:

Canteen
Corner
As you can imagine, with over 940 students, our canteen is a very busy place!! A reminder that all lunch &
afternoon tea orders will need to be ordered online through Flexischools. Cut off for orders will remain at
9:00am and you can purchase from the full canteen menu.
For orders placed online after 9:00am there will be a limited menu available. This limited menu will cut off at
10:00am. It will consist of:
6 pack of chicken nuggets
cheese or ham & cheese toasted sandwiches
cheese or vegemite sandwiches
red or green apples & pears
normal drink menu
Students are still able to use cash to purchase normal lunch & afternoon tea items over the counter such as
ice blocks, drinks, homemade muffins/pikelets and other snacks at break times.
Log onto www.flexischools.com.au or click on the flexischools picture below to login or set up your account.
If you need any assistance to do this, pop by the Canteen and see Di.
All of the profits raised from the Canteen go back into the school.
Thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter.
