RUTHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 8th May 2020

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL …… Well, it’s difficult to know where to start. It appears as though we may be slowly moving back into “normal” schooling over the next few weeks. I’m very sure that many students have missed being around their friends and are looking forward to returning to the beautiful chaos of school. Perhaps some of you have enjoyed the solitude and level of self- determination that can come from an online learning experience and would be happy for it to continue! I’ve no doubt as well that many are worried about how much they have “missed”. It is important to consider that in total; we have had remote learning for four school weeks. The school holidays made it seem so much longer! So, families – give yourselves a bit of a break. We, as a school community have worked really hard to get through this unusual time as best as possible and staff will begin face to face teaching with evaluating where students are up to and then planning moving forward will be modified to reflect that. As a member of the executive team, I would like to acknowledge the incredible work of all our school staff – our teachers, front office staff, cleaners and our Student Learning and Support Officers. What was asked of them was a significant change and they have delivered, not only providing online content, but providing work booklets for students who were unable to access Canvas and also spending time contacting families and offering support as needed. Rutherford Technology High School as a designated email address for students requiring support with their online learning, please email [email protected] Please ensure you check your emails regularly as any new information will be sent there – and get in touch if you are not receiving those emails and need to update your information. Within this newsletter is all information for next week – timetables and expectations. You can update your details at: https://bit.ly/RTHS-DETAILS-UPDATE It is really important that Year 12 use their time well as they come in next week - particularly those students who have major projects. The HSC exams will be going ahead as normal and we will have new Assessment Schedules to hand out next week.

RUTHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 8th May 2020

PDHPE FACULTY REPORT Welcome back to all students to a very different way of learning at the start of Term 2. This is a good opportunity to explain how PDHPE is operating during the COVID-19 Pandemic. As with all subjects, Personal Development/Health and Elective lessons are posted on CANVAS, with teachers on-line to assist students during normal class time, as per the blended timetable. Sport challenges are also being posted for students in Years 8-10 each Thursday morning. Students in Year 7 have been set an activity log to complete during their practical PDHPE and Sport lessons. Additional support material for TSP Football lessons can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evScGLS3Ho0 It is a difficult time for all, however students are encouraged to contact their PDHPE teacher to gain assistance in completing set tasks. Our team eagerly awaits hearing from students so as to engage them as best as we can during this time. In other news, the school X-Country was held on Friday 20th March 2020 and was open to all self-nominating students. The event was very successful and the standard of participants was high, with some very fast times being recorded. Congratulations to all participants and the Age Champions who are listed below: Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the school Athletics Carnival was unable to proceed in the second last week of Term 1. Further to this, the Hunter School Sporting Association met towards the end of Term 1 and announced that ALL school sporting competitions are cancelled until Week 7 Term 3. This includes all CHS knockout competitions and Gala days, and it is yet to be decided as to whether any of these competitions are able to run in a modified format, potentially in Term 4. Athletics and Cross-Country carnivals (Zone, Regional, State) have all been cancelled in 2020. PDHPE staff are investigating ways to hold a school Athletics carnival once normal school operations are resumed. We are all very much looking forward to getting back to business as usual, until that time, stay safe and don’t forget to take time out to keep your body and mind fit and healthy. Apart from student physical activity matrix’s and challenges, there are a vast number of on-line resources that can assist you with this. Mr David Thomas Head Teacher PDHPE

SCHOOL MUSICAL CANCELLED

Dear Seussical Cast, Band, and Crew It is with great sadness that I announce the cancellation of our 2020 musical. Unfortunately, this decision has come about due to COVID-19 and the restrictions that are currently in place. We are not alone as musicals all around the world have been cancelled or postponed including shows on Broadway, The West End, and within the professional Australian industry. We have finished our journey in the land of Dr. Seuss earlier than expected but this does not mean that our time has been wasted. We have completed the audition process, the casting process and how to create a character. We have committed many songs, dances, and movements to memory (trust me you will never get the songs of Seussical out of your head!). The band have completed a number of tremendously challenging musical numbers. Additionally, we have all worked as a huge and multitalented team. I would like to thank you all for trusting me to take you on this journey. You have given me beautiful, funny, and inspiring performances within our rehearsals and the fact that an audience will not get the opportunity to see this is the greatest loss. Thank you to the leads for taking the time and dedication to become your characters. Thank you to the Jungle of Nool for running around like crazy animals. Thank you to The Whos for being so small and for constantly having to “Look up!”. Thank you to the band for learning some crazy hard songs. Thank you to my helpers for being as dedicated to this musical as I was. Thank you to all the teachers that spend hours of their own time on bringing this show to life. Our journey may be over but our friendship is not through, see you in all in Solla Sollew, Miss Leslie, Ms Hornery (HT CAPA) & The CAPA Faculty

RUTHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 8th May 2020

Dear Student/Parent

Recently you may have noticed some changes in the way your School Bus has displayed the 4 digit route on the outside of the bus.

Recent changes have meant that two school routes have merged into one. For the remainder of March 2020 those routes that have merged will display both routes with the display ‘rolling’ and showing the Old and New.

From the 1st of April 2020, the buses will start to show just the New numbers. Note, there is no change to how the bus will operate, it remains the same.

The following are the routes that will be merging: 2334 will become 2333 2553 will become 2552 2583 will become 2582 2544 will become 2543 2417 will become 2416

The replacement four digit numbers are now live on transport apps. Plan your trip at transportnsw.info

Thank you Hunter Valley Buses

A MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

With the current health situation, many of our normal routines and daily activities have changed. Naturally this can be unsettling, and we can find that the things we usually did to look after our Well-being – like going to the gym, or going out for coffee with friends – have had to be put on hold.

Whether you are working from home, or in some form of physical isolation or distancing, it can be helpful to organise a daily routine that involves a balance between activities that:

· give you a sense of achievement · help you feel close and connected with others · activities that you can do just for pleasure

When we are struggling with anxiety and worry, we can lose touch with things that used to give us pleasure. Plan to do some activities each day that are pleasurable and make you feel joyful. For example: watching a funny movie, dancing or singing to your favourite songs, taking a relaxing bath or going for a walk.

We feel good when we have achieved or accomplished something, so it’s helpful to include activities each day that give you a sense of achievement. For example, cooking a new recipe, gardening or completing an exercise routine.

We are social animals, so we need and naturally crave closeness and connection with other people. With the current health crisis, many of us may be physically isolated or distant from others, so it’s important that we consider creative ways to connect. The most popular way is video conferencing or just simply making a phone call.

If you’ve been inactive and feeling low for a while, you’ll likely be experiencing low motivation and energy levels. You can build up your motivation and energy by increasing your activity. Don’t think – just do. Motivation follows action.

Lastly, an imbalance of pleasure, achievement and closeness can affect our mood. At the end of each day, could you check in with yourself and reflect on 'what did I do today that gave me a sense of achievement? Pleasure? Closeness with others? Did I get a good balance, or what can I do differently tomorrow?

It can sometimes be common for conflict to occur between parents and their teenagers. Some conflict can be minor, while some conflict can be distressing. As a parent or carer, if you feel that you might need some extra support it might be worth a call to Parent Line NSW. Parent Line NSW is a confidential telephone counselling, information and referral service for parents and carers of children aged 0 to 18. Trained professional counsellors are available from 9:00am to 9:00pm weekdays and from 4:00pm to 9:00Pm on weekends. Phone: 1300 1300 52

Main Idea & Details: Icebergs

Read the text. Then, complete the graphic organizer and paragraph frame that follow.

An iceberg is a large piece of ice that is formed from fresh water.

They are found floating in very cold oceans, seas or lakes.

Icebergs come in many shapes and sizes. Usually, only a small part

of the iceberg is visible above the water. From above, it may look

like an ice mountain. However, most of the iceberg is hidden

underwater.

Icebergs form when large chunks break off of glaciers or ice

shelves in very cold regions, like Antarctica. The icebergs travel

with ocean currents. When icebergs float into warmer water, they

begin to melt and break apart.
