Dr Emmanuel Cooper OBE (HonDFA) 1938–2012 was a distinguished craftsman, writer, teacher and broadcaster. A potter of international standing, his work is represented in many public collections. The author of nearly thirty books, he was editor of Ceramic Review, visiting Professor at London’s Royal College of Art, and a regular broadcaster on television and radio. He was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to art. Emmanuel’s contribution to the world of ceramics was hugely significant. This will be celebrated with a touring exhibition of his ceramics and a publication looking at his life in pots – produced by Ruthin Craft Centre in collaboration with the University of Derby.

Curated by Gregory Parsons.

Coming up this January as part of the Emmanuel Cooper exhibition:

Looking forwards from the past – ceramic practice now.

In recent years the ceramic field has been notable for potters exploring very new ways of working, frequently using other materials sometimes combined with clay. Curiously, whilst this modern investigation has been progressing, there has been an equally strong interest from potters, in revisiting old ceramic traditions such as slipware.

In ‘Looking forwards from the past’ two artists will explain their work and their very different approaches to contemporary practice.

Bethan Lloyd Worthington is one of the most creative of contemporary artists using ceramics, whose practice draws on multiple disciplines. She is a member of the group of artists who operate from a London base as ‘Studio Manifold’ undertaking an extraordinary range of creative projects. She will show examples of her work and discuss her ideas.

Doug Fitch has been described as a modern day country potter. He works within the Devonshire slipware tradition and yet tries to bring his own contemporary voice to the genre. He will discuss his work and working methods and in particular the influence of the countryside on his work.

The speakers will be introduced by potter, writer and lecturer Alex McErlain who will also discuss changes within studio pottery over the past forty years.

It is often said that gardens create order from nature’s chaos. It could further be said that Myth organises the fantastic, unpredictable and unfathomable into vehicles where we can explore the full range of the human condition. Magic emerges by revealing mysterious and parallel worlds in ways that we can feel we could be part of. Through their art, Betty and Ronald Pennell delight and enchant us, taking one on an otherworldly journey through mythical and beguiling landscapes.

Tutored by John Nash and Edward Bawden at the Royal College of Art in the 1950s, Betty Pennell is a wood engraver of particular and considerable talent. Her imagery draws on the yew trees and hedging that delineate the formal gardens along the borders of Wales and England. Ronald Pennell engraves freely on hand-blown glass vessel forms, his narratives becoming an ever-changing grande chasse through imaginary tales of fantastical feats.

This exhibition celebrates the major achievement of this fifty-year creative partnership; the realisation of an outstanding garden, a truly magical place alongside a thriving and superlative creative practice. Ruthin Craft Centre is delighted to have this unique opportunity to stage and share this outstanding body of work. You are invited in to this enchanting and magical world; we hope you will enjoy many reveries...

illuminate

People have celebrated “mid-winter” festivals for thousands of years. They usually involve feasting and fires to mark the beginning of the return of the sun and longer hours of daylight occurring with the Winter Solstice and called by many names including Yule, Christmas, and Saturnalia. In all of these festivals lights are an important part of the experience.

So as we decorate our homes with lights, Illuminate celebrates this with an exciting selection of new lighting for your home. Made by talented young designers from throughout the UK, Illuminate has hand-blown glass light-shades, pendant lights and desk lamps made from a diverse range of materials – all superb pieces to light up your mid winter evenings.

Silversmith Pamela Rawnsley in residence 4 – 30 November 2013 This Creative Wales Award will enable Pamela to research and produce a new body of work, in various ways.

Her current work as a silversmith has focused on a strong sense of place, connected to her immediate surroundings. She now have the opportunity to discover her visual response to a completely different environment, that of South Australia.

‘Landscape is paramount in informing my work.’

In recent years I have focused on the immediate area where I live, making close observations of the shape shifting light and weather on the Brecon Beacons, at specific times of day and year. These culminated in groups of silver vessels expressing a central stillness combined with a strong sense of movement.

I received a Creative Wales Ambassador Award in 2012 which led to an invited residency in Australia at the renowned Jam Factory, and a chance to experience other extraordinary

and strange landscapes. And now a new body of work is under way, in which the colours, textures, and flora of South Australia form the core, and my original source is seen a new.

9 December 2013 – 7 February 2014 Studio 5 Lost in art is a project aimed at people aged 50+ with dementia, along with their family members and carers. Each week, participants visit the galleries at Ruthin Craft Centre where they view and respond to exhibitions; working alongside artist Sian Hughes they produce artwork with the gallery acting as starting point and inspiration

The aim of the project is to explore the role of the visual arts in addressing issues which can affect people with dementia, including social isolation, confidence, communication and quality of life and wellbeing

Children from Ysgol Gellifor have worked alongside the Lost in art group to make a collaborative artwork, during one session. The group were able to share their creative ideas with the children, thereby raising awareness of dementia and how it effects people in their community.

The project is led by Denbighshire County Council’s Community Arts Service in partnership with Ruthin Craft Centre. The project is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Denbighshire County Council.

We would like to invite you to view the work and meet the participants at a special exhibition event in Studio 5 at Ruthin Craft Centre.
