1. SUMMARY
All the participants boarded the vessel ORV Sagar Kanya at Marmugao port at 1200 hrs on
20/10/2014. The loading of mooring equipment to the ship was completed on 20/10/2014.The
bunkering was done on the same day and the ship sailed out from Marmugao Port at 1845 hrs on
20/10/2014. The servicing of SEVEN existing moorings at the Equator, 93E, 00; 83E and 000, 77E.;
10N, 92040’E; 10S, 930E; 10N, 77ºE; and 10S, 77ºE were to be carried out during the cruise. However,
we completed the servicing of FOUR moorings i.e., at 10N, 77ºE; 10S, 77ºE; 000, 77E and 000,83E
and retrieved the moorings along 930E. We have deployed additional mooring at 00, 830E utilizing
the equipment retrieved from 930E moorings. The CTD was operated at three locations, i.e., at 10N
and 000, 770E and 000, 930 E. We also retrieved THREE coastal moorings (off Kanyakumari and
Goa coasts) and tried one off Kerala coast on the way back to Marmugao port. After completing all
the stations successfully, the vessel arrived at Marmugao port on 21/11/14.

3. INTRODUCTION
The cruise SK-317 was the Eleventh of the series since 2000 for undertaking the equatorial
current meter mooring operations under the Ocean Observing System (OOS) program of the
Ministry of Earth Science. The cruise was organized for servicing and maintenance of the
seven existing current meter moorings at 77ºE, 83ºE, 93ºE along the Equator, and at 10N,
93ºE; 10S, 93ºE; 10N, 77ºE; and 10S, 77ºE and give training to B U students. All the
participants boarded the vessel at Marmugao port on 20 October 2014. The cruise started
on 20/10/14 at Marmugao port and completed at Marmugao Port on 21/11/14.

7. WORK ACCOMPLISHED
The cruise participants started from NIO to board ORV Sagar Kanya at Marmugao Port and boarded the ship at 1200hrs on 20/10/14. The Ship sailed out from Marmugao Port at 1830
hrs on 20/10/14 after completion of bunkering. We had a meeting with Captain, Chief Officer and 2nd officer and the ship crew at 1100hrs on 22/10/2014 and explained to them about the mooring operations. We recalculated the ship time for completing all the moorings because the ship’s average speed was only 7.5 knts. It was decided to reduce the service time at each mooring by deploying the mooring on the next day of the retrieval to maintain the cruise schedule. This has been done after thorough discussions with the ship personnel and scientific participants. The ship arrived at the 1st mooring station, 10N, 770E at 1130hrs on 25/10/2014. The CTD was lowered up to the maximum depth of 1000 m and (CTD01) completed at 1515 hrs on 25/10/2014. The MPN was also operated up to 500 m from 1630hrs to 1715hrs. The retrieval of mooring at this station was started at 0710hrs and completed successfully at 1200hrs on 26/10/2014. The Multi-beam survey was carried out for about 11 km2 area at 1600hrs. The redeployment of
mooring at 10N, 770E was completed at 1103hrs on 27/10/2014. We moved to the next mooring station. The retrieval of mooring at 000, 770E was carried out at 0520hrs on 28/10/2014 and completed at 1400 hrs. The Multi-beam survey was carried out at this
location. We redeployed the mooring at 000, 770E on 29/10/2014. We arrived at the next mooring location 10S, 770E and retrieved the mooring at 1030 hrs on 30/10/2014. Redeployment of mooring at 10S, 770E was completed on 31/10/2014. We moved to another mooring location 000, 830E and completed retrieval of mooring at 1230hrs on 02/11/2014. It was redeployed at 000, 830E on 03/11/2014. We arrived at 930E, 10S on 6/11/2014 and completed the retrieval of all the three moorings along 930E successfully from 6/11/2014 to 8/11/2014. CTD was operated up to the sea bottom at 10N, 930E. Since we retrieved all the three years old moorings along 93E successfully, we wanted to utilize the instruments recovered and do an additional mooring at 10N, 830E. So we proceeded to that location and reached there at 0530hrs 0n 12/11/2014. The multi-beam survey was conducted up to 0715hrs. The deployment was started at 0900hrs and completed at 1300hrs. With this final deployment, our scheduled mooring operations in the EIO were completed. Since,
some more time left for the schedule arrival at Marmugao Port, we tried to pick up the shallow water moorings along west coast of India. We retrieved THREE coastal moorings. Meanwhile, we deployed Argos Drifters of 10 nos. along the cruise track at different locations. The SST and met data were collected by B U students along the track. 7.0 Mooring operations:

7.7 COASTAL MOORINGS
RETRIEVAL OF COASTAL MOORING OFF KANYA KUMARI
The vessel arrived at 060 58.734’N, 077023.313’E at 0800hrs on 15/11/2014. We tried to release the
buoy many times but it did not get released.
The caption suggested that send the deep sea winch cable along with some buoys and weight
around the mooring line and pull it up. We have done the same by starting it at 1200hrs and
completed at 1450hrs. The retrieval of cable was started at 1300hrs and immediately the buoy was
surfaced. The mooring line was entangled with the cable and hydro-float and ACRs came first and
the ADCP buoy was retrieved in the last. The details are given the table 7.7.1-7.7.3
At 1500hrs started moving towards another coastal station, off Quilon.
Reached the mooring position 090 00.025’N, 075056.816’E at 0900hrs on 16/11/2014 and started
search operation by taking ranges. But signal was not received from the ACR. It was also informed
that earlier trail also, the signal was not received. So started towing operation without knowing the
exact position of the mooring at 0915hrs and completed at 2000hrs. But we could not trace the
mooring line. We proceeded to next station off Goa.
RETRIEVAL OFF GOA (DEEPER MOORING)
We reached the mooring location at 1030hrs on 19/11/2014. Started retrieval operation at 1035hrs
and completed successfully at 1600hrs. Retrieved one 300 KHz ADCP (shallow water ADCP) along
with ACR. The details are given in the table 7.7.4-7.7.6
We moved to next shallow station towards the coast. The ship reached the station at 2000 hrs and it
was kept drifting.
RETRIEVAL OFF GOA (SHALLOW MOORING)
We were on the top of the mooring 150 12.107’N, 720 59.314’E at 0630hrs on 20/11/2014 and started
retrieval and completed it at 0900hrs. The details are shown in fig. 7.7.7-7.7.9
7.8 CTD/MPN observations
The CTD was operated at three locations, 1. 00059.298’N, 077002.102’E up to 1000m. 2. 00001.37’N,
083010.07’E up to 1000 m. 3. 00057.19’N, 092032.15’E up to 4000m. The MPN was operated up to
500m at 00001.00’N, 077000’E and up to 1000m at 000, 0930E. The water samples were also
collected at these locations by BU students.
7.9 Argos Drifters
There were 10 nos. of Argo Drifters were deployed along the track. Details are given in the table
7.9.1.
8. CONCLUSIONS
The cruise SK-317 was successful with all scientific operations completed as per the plan and we
could retrieve additional three coastal moorings along the west coast of India.
9. RECOMMENDATIONS
The onboard EVAC system may be properly maintained and the fresh water tanks be
cleaned during the dry dock period.
