According to an opinion of the Scientific Committeeon Food of the European Commission (7 Septem-ber 2000), beta-carotene should not be taken inhigh doses (20 mg beta-carotene per day ormore) as a dietary supplement by current heavysmokers. An intake of 1– 2 mg per day, consumedas a food additive, is regarded as safe. BASF rec-ommends that the concentration of beta-carotenein beverages should not exceed 2 mg per 100 ml.
