A Message from your President

Over the past year, I have had the great honor in representing over 5,000 Diplomates as President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). It is hard to believe that I am in my fi nal stretch on the ABOMS Board. With each edition of the

newsletter, the President is given the opportunity to write a message to our Diplomates. Many times, we use this opportunity to inform you about upcoming changes to Board certifi cation. This time, I would like to use my last President’s message, to speak about the value and relevance of being Board Certifi ed.

Many words come to mind when I think about Certifi cation: excellence, high standards, continuum of education, peer recognition and public safety. Certifi cation by ABOMS represents a level of excellence in OMS. The Certifi cation and Maintenance of Certifi cation processes help assure the public that a Diplomate is knowledgeable and qualifi ed to practice in our fi eld. It signifi es to our colleagues that you are committed to lifelong learning. The current Chair of the

Mayo Clinic’s Surgical Quality Subcommittee, Robert Cima, MD, informed the public in a recent article about the importance of certifi cation. Cima states, “It is a marker of someone who is committed to high-quality care and who is trying to stay abreast of the knowledge and the changes in health care in their specialty.”

The Board’s goal is to administer appropriate examinations that are contemporary to the specialty while maintaining a level of value for our Diplomates and profession. Along with this objective, we also have a duty to educate the public on the importance of certifi cation. As Diplomates, you independently participated in extensive and rigorous examination processes and were successful in your eff orts in becoming Board Certifi ed. Board certifi cation has been present in the medical fi eld for decades and the importance of the process has not diminished.

This year, 284 Candidates took the Oral Certifying Examination (OCE) with the desire to become Board certifi ed. Of the 284 Candidates, 191 came out successful. I am eager to congratulate the newly certifi ed individuals who will carry on the ABOMS tradition and uphold the title Diplomate.

G.E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACSPresident

Congratulations on Another 10 Years!

Certifi cation Maintenance (CM) is a comprehensive program instituted by ABOMS in 2005. In order to maintain certifi cation, Diplomates who hold time-limited certifi cates are required to participate in this program. The Diplomate names listed below are individuals whose certifi cates expired on 12/31/2013 and successfully met all four components of the CM process: Professional Standing, Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment, Cognitive Expertise and Evaluation of Performance in Practice. Congratulations!

Changes to the 2015 Recertification Examination

The mission of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is to assure the public of safe and optimal care through the development and maintenance of high standards of certification and re-certification of Diplomates. The officers, directors and staff at ABOMS take this responsibility seriously, and continually assess our testing and Maintenance of Certification programs.

With this mission in mind, a scope of practice survey was sent in 2012 in an effort to gauge the current practice environment for the majority of our Diplomates. The results of the survey underwent extensive review by our Board with guidance from statistical experts, and a new blueprint was formulated to take effect with the 2015 Recertification Examination (RE). The goal of this blueprint realignment is to balance the appropriate testing of our Diplomate’s knowledge base with relevance to clinical practice.

The changes to the blueprint are significant. Each Diplomate will be assessed on all ten domains, with weighting in each determined in some degree to the scope of practice results. Each candidate will take the same examination, eliminating the “modules” that have been used previously. In addition, questions will be generally based on review articles from some of the most commonly read scientific publications relevant to the specialty. The Board of Directors feel that this rebalance will not only offer a fair and relevant examination, but will also maintain and elevate the value of Board Certification by ABOMS.

The practice of oral & maxillofacial surgery is ever changing and dynamic. So, too, is the certification and maintenance of certification by your Board. We trust that our Diplomates will find the changes to the 2015 Recertification Examination meaningful, fair, and most importantly, relevant.

Who are Those Guys? From time to time, we need to communicate with you concerning your voluntary participation as an ABOMS Diplomate. Our most efficient way to do that is to send you an email. We know that the use of email can be frustrating to you, especially given that you likely receive an inordinate number of unnecessary communications, known as spam. Having to deal with ever increasing volumes of messages

consumes your otherwise valuable time in managing your practice and in caring for your patients.

We are acutely aware of that and, thus, limit our emails to only those that convey important information. Information that is essential to maintaining your Diplomate status or to keep you informed about activities and initiatives underway at ABOMS.

In many circumstances these emails are sent to all of our Diplomates, at once. We use a “bulk” email provider, Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com ), to send these messages. Yet, you may not receive these communiques because your Internet Service Provider (ISP) email service may “block” them on the assumption that they are unwanted spam. It is also possible that your email application may have automatic filters that perform the same function. If so, you should contact your ISP or adjust your filters to permit receipt of any email from “aboms.org.” In so doing you will be assured of receiving messages that we send. If you need help in making sure that you receive our emails, you may contact the Administrative Office at (312) 642-0070, and we can help you.

So, in answer to that question – “Who are Those Guys” that keep sending me emails? We are the outfit that values your participation as one of our oral and maxillofacial surgeon Diplomates! We want to make sure you receive critical and informative news in a timely manner. When you see a message from us, you will know that it is not spam. Rather, it is information you will hopefully find useful, and, certainly relevant to maintaining your certification “in good standing.”

The Importance of Your AddressThe ABOMS believes that email is the most efficient, and timely way to communicate but is not the ideal method for some Diplomates. However, as we continue to use email, ABOMS has not completely lost touch with print. On occasion, the Board will send letters and/or reminder mailings directly to a Diplomate when matters or circumstances directly affects his/her certification. Keeping your mailing address up-to-date on your Diplomate profile is essential to maintaining your Board certification and allowing us to stay in touch with you. So the next time you confirm your mailing and email addresses with ABOMS, you’ll understand the importance of clicking continue before completing the process. Our goal is to keep you informed!

When it comes to PAGES humanitarian medical missions, happiness works both ways. In 1995, Dr. Robert Flint, an oral and maxillofacial surgery resident at the University of Louisville, KY, participated in his fi rst surgical mission with P.A.G.E.S. (Philippine American Group of Educators and Surgeons). He had no idea this experience would have a profound eff ect on his life, nor did he know it would be the beginning of a life-long tradition for him. He thought his skills may bring happiness to the Filipinos, but he did not know they would return happiness to him.

Operation HOPE (Helping Other People Excel), the cornerstone project of PAGES, a non-profi t organization (www.pageshope.org), began in May 1990. Spanning two generations, Operation HOPE has indeed breathed newfound optimism for Filipinos with congenital cleft defects. The early correction of these defects assures a happy social life, as well as the long-term eff ect of a better quality of life.

Dr. Flint trained to be a surgeon because he knew he loved performing oral and maxillofacial surgery, and has enjoyed his private practice in Utah since 1996. What he didn’t know was that using his skills to perform cleft lip and palate

repair, changing people’s lives one surgery at a time, would sink deep into his heart, bringing him great fulfi llment and joy. After 19 years of traveling to various provinces in the Philippines and participating in these surgical missions, now as the Director of Surgery, Dr. Flint knows how a surgery literally changes a child’s or an adult’s life. He knows how valuable the work of P.A.G.E.S. is - the much-needed surgeries and the educating of local doctors and hospital staff . He knows that he is aff ectionately known there as “Dr. Pepper”, a special term of endearment. He knows the two-week surgical mission every February is an event that he plans for and looks forward to each year, and that he will, undoubtedly, return home tired, fulfi lled, and happy.

Because of Dr. Flint’s great love for the Filipino people and for Operation HOPE, one by one, he has taken his wife, daughters, son, and others with him to experience the pure joy of serving these impoverished, yet gracious people. Each one has returned blessed and changed forever. Although the Filipino people feel happy to have these life-changing surgeries, Dr. Flint feels happy to provide them. Happiness really does work both ways.

Earlier this spring, ABOMS Past President, David Frost, DDS, MS, was honored in receiving the ninth annual Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) Golden Apple Award. This award was created to recognize the extraordinary educational contributions of volunteers

to international program sites. Dr. Frost’s commitment to HVO and its mission is clear with his twelve years of service on the Board of Directors, half of which he was Chair.

Dr. Frost served an instrumental role in the formation of the HVO Oral Health Initiative, which was sponsored by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS). His dedication to HVO’s cause in providing education and training to health care providers in developing countries has remained strong since his fi rst volunteer experience in 1987. HVO’s Executive Director, Nancy Kelly, states, “He (David Frost) has served HVO in every capacity and has provided exceptional leadership in each of those roles. He has also maintained a fervent commitment to improving oral health care around the world, and has sought to raise awareness of the critical role oral health care plays in determining overall health status.” Kelly continued, “By highlighting the accomplishments of volunteers like Dr. Frost, we hope to raise awareness of global health issues an d encourage others to work towards better health care around the world.”

Director Nominees

I am again honored to be nominated to serve on the Board of Directors for ABOMS. During my six years on the Examination Committee, I have developed a great

admiration and respect for my fellow Examiners as well as for the certifi cation process. Constant improvement of written test items as well as thorough Examiner training has produced a culture of continual improvement in the examination process, and it has been special to take part in that process.

It continues to be my passion to see our specialty thrive and expand, and I have been particularly fortunate to lead a wonderful residency training program. Although residency training and Board Certifi cation are separate and distinct processes, I view them (at least for my residents) as being on a continuum, with Board Certifi cation being a natural progression of one’s training. A fair and valid testing process for initial certifi cation, as well as for certifi cation maintenance, can and should be a source of pride for the specialty as well as for the individual Diplomate.

Being a member of the ABOMS Board of Directors is more than leading the examination process, as Delegates and current Directors know. Interaction with other specialty boards, regional/national calibration of the specialty, and adapting the examinations to changing national standards of practice are just a few examples of the work of ABOMS Board of Directors. My service activity, committee work, and e ducational involvement with individuals from all of our regions gives me confi dence that I can accurately and fairly represent the specialty in situations like these.

I view the ABOMS Director nomination as a great honor and wonderful opportunity to continue serving our specialty. I look forward to the possibility of collaborating with ABOMS and AAOMS leadership in eff orts of continuous quality improvement. Becoming a Director is a privilege and responsibility I would gratefully accept if bestowed on me by the AAOMS House of Delegates.

direCtor nomineeS

It has been the highlight of my career to serve on the Examination Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). Being

nominated by the Committee to serve as an ABOMS Director is my greatest professional honor. In my tenure with the Committee, I have served as Section II Co-Chair and orthognathic Content Expert and received awards for case submission and item development.

I began my OMS career in academics serving as Program Director and Interim Chief at Emory University. I have since moved to private practice; however maintain a part-time voluntary appointment with the program actively working with residents at Emory affi liated institutions as Adjunct Associate Professor in OMS. In addition, I hold a part-time appointment in OMS at the Atlanta VA where I train residents in the OR and clinic on a weekly basis.

These experiences provide me with a distinct perspective on the specialty. I believe functioning in all three practice settings equips me to contribute to the continued excellence of ABOMS.

I am involved with organized de ntistry/OMS and sit on several committees on the local, state national and international levels. I have served as the president of the Georgia Society of OMS and the OMS sections of the AADR/IADR. I have sat on the AAOMS Committee on Residency Education and Training beginning in 2008, Chaired CRET from 2011-2013 and continue on CRET as the AAOMS representative on the Residency Review Committee for OMS to the ADA/CODA. I have also represented Georgia as Alternate Delegate and currently Delegate to the AAOMS House of Delegates.

If I am aff orded the opportunity to serve as a Director of ABOMS, I assure you I will strive to maintain and foster the policies which will lead to continuation of the preeminence of our Board and specialty.

Sanford Ratner, DDS

I am honored to be a nominee for the position of Director for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). Six years ago,

when I became an Examiner on ABOMS, I questioned what my role might be in this esteemed organization. I have always been a full scope private practitioner, spending my days taking care of my patients, equally in my offi ce and in our local hospitals. I was placed in Section II, testing on major surgery, where I met and became friends with the most amazing individuals. Over the course of my tenure as an Examiner, I was selected to be a Horizontal Rotator for two years, testing in all areas of the exam. I was also chosen by the Directors to be Co-Chair of my section for two terms. In these capacities, I was given the opportunity to help create the examination as well as play a role in the way it is administered. These experiences brought immense satisfaction in both my professional and personal lives.

I now have the great privilege to run for a position that will allow me to continue my eff orts to improve the process of certifi cation in our specialty. At our community hospital we have a population of 600 surgeons. I have held the positions of Chairman of Surgical Quality Assurance, Vice Chairman of Surgery, and Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These experiences have provided me a unique perspective to evaluate and implement policy. They have also instilled the concept of a community standard of care. My goal is to utilize these tools to continue the eff orts of our Board to make the certifi cation process fair, balanced, and a desirable ambition of our OMS community. I proudly and humbly submit my name as a candidate for ABOMS Director.
