COVID19
Stay at home (self-isolate) if you have
a A new continuous cough
b High temperature (378 degrees centigrade or higher)

Further information and details of how to self-isolate are available on nhsuk
If you have serious symptoms or cannot manage at home you should contact the surgery
during opening hours Outside of hours use NHS 111 online coronavirus service that can tell
you if you need medical help and advise you what to do
(You should only call NHS 111 if you cannot get online)
The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new
infectious diseases The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and
NHS staff while ensuring services are available to the public as normal
Engage Consult
We are delighted to announce that we have successfully launched digital e-consultation at Pickering
Medical Practice
We know that many of our patients are very comfortable using online resources and email and this is
the natural evolution of our service Thank you to those of you who have already given it a go
Digital e-consultation allows a two-way written conversation between a patient and a clinician at the
practice It allows uploading of digital photographs where needed It also automatically links our
patients to lots of relevant health advice and recommended websites
We know that for the foreseeable future we will have to continue to triage all face to face
appointments This is to ensure that the risk of Covid 19 spread remains as low as possible Using digital
e-consult means that the telephone lines are kept free for those that need it most or who cannot
navigate digital services as easily
Please do give it a go next time you feel you may need an appointment with a doctor or a nurse
Please use link below to access our online services to request help from the practice either from a
clinician or the administration team httpswsppsf-livecouk1464portal
Baby immunisations during COVID-19

immunisation clinic on a Tuesday morning to our branch site at Thornton-Dale surgery It is important
that you keep your appointment with us

Coronavirus (COVID-19) ndash advice for smokers and vapers
The evidence on smoking and Coronavirus (COVID-19) is mixed and developing On the available
evidence we advise
If you smoke you generally have an increased risk of contracting respiratory infection and of more
severe symptoms once infected Coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms may therefore be more severe if
you smoke
Stopping smoking will bring immediate benefits to your health including if you have an existing
smoking-related disease This is particularly important for both you and for our NHS at a time of
intense pressure on the health service
E-cigarettes (vapes) can be an effective aid to stopping smoking and staying smokefree
It is currently unknown what effect vaping may have on susceptibility to severe disease if you are
infected with coronavirus (COVID-19)
For most people vaping remains significantly less harmful than smoking and it is very important that
you avoid returning to smoking
Visit Smokefree for information and advice on stopping smoking
Smoking and coronavirus (COVID-19)
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory viral infection affecting the lungs and airways There is strong
evidence that smoking tobacco is generally associated with an increased risk of developing respiratory
viral infections
Smoking causes damage to the lungs and airways and harms the immune system reducing your ability
to fight against infection Smoking also involves repetitive hand-to-face movements which increase the
risk of viruses entering the body
This means that if you smoke you generally have an increased risk of contracting respiratory
infections like coronavirus (COVID-19) and you are more likely to have underlying smoking related
conditions which could lead to more severe disease outcomes
People who are exposed to second-hand smoke are also at generally increased risk of harm to their
lungs and hearts Children are especially at risk when exposed to second-hand smoke as they have less
well-developed airways lungs and immune systems
Stopping smoking now will bring immediate benefits to your health including if you have an existing
smoking-related disease This is particularly important at a time of intense pressure on the NHS
There is a lot of support available to help you to stop smoking and getting the right support can boost
your chances of success by up to three times Using nicotine replacement products reduces tobacco
withdrawal symptoms and can help you quit and stay smokefree Visit Smokefree for information and
advice on stopping smoking
Vaping and coronavirus (COVID-19)
E-cigarettes (vapes) can be an effective aid to stopping smoking and staying smokefree The evidence
on the health risks of e-cigarettes is still developing However it is clear that vaping is far less harmful to
the respiratory system than smoking There is very little evidence on vaping and coronavirus (COVID-19)
and it is unknown whether vaping makes you more susceptible to severe disease if you become
infected If it does the risk is likely to be much less than if you smoke
Vaping remains much less harmful than smoking for most people and it is very important that you
avoid returning to smoking
Vaping involves repetitive hand-to-face movements which provide greater risk of a route of entry into
the body for viruses To reduce the risk of contact with coronavirus (COVID-19) you should
Wash your hands more frequently than usual for 20 seconds with soap and water (or use hand
sanitiser if soap is not available)
Clean your e-cigarette regularly
Public Health England strongly advises against sharing any vaping devices
Public Health Englandrsquos 2018 independent e-cigarette evidence review found that to date there have
been no identified health risks of passive vaping to bystanders There is currently no evidence that
coronavirus (COVID-19) can be caught from passive exposure to e-cigarette vapour but in the absence
of evidence we recommend that vapers avoid exhaling clouds of vapour in the presence of others
Visit Smokefree for information and advice on using e-cigarettes to help you stop smoking
Self Swabbing for COVID
The practice continues to be one of the 70 practices in England who have access to self swab kits for patients Patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) symptoms can do the swab in their home This is convenient for patients and reduces the risk of infection for practice staff Patients send their swabs directly to Public Health England labs for testing and patients and practices are advised of the outcome This essential work is helping to efficiently identify patients with COVID-19
The PRINCIPLE Trial Potential drug treatments to treat COVID-19 amongst high risk patients in primary care
We are now actively recruiting into our first COVID-19 clinical trial led by the Oxford Primary Care Clinical Trials Unit The PRINCIPLE Trial is a large innovative clinical trial testing potential drug treatments for COVID-19 in primary care Eligible patients are randomised to a potential drug treatment arm or a no treatment arm and keep a symptom diary

We have been following all of the national regional and local guidance to ensure that we deliver the safest care to our communities during the pandemic

Our wait times for all our appointments have significantly improved and we have been
really grateful for the patience and support from our patients in embracing the new
approaches were taking

What Wersquove Been Discussing
We have been following all of the national regional and local guidance to ensure that we deliver the safest care to our communities during the pandemic
We have taken the approach that whilst we need to do things differently we will endeavour to be as positive proactive and productive as we can be With that in mind we have delivered the same number of GP appointments in the last 3 months as we always do embracing telephone appointments video consultations and digital e-consultations Weve found that a huge number of medical issues can be dealt with remotely meaning that we have face to face appointments in a safer environment for those that really need it
Our wait times for all our appointments have significantly improved and we have been
really grateful for the patience and support from our patients in embracing the new
approaches were taking
What Wersquore Reading
The Wild Remedy How Nature Mends Us by Emma Mitchell as recommended by Chris
Packham on BBC Springwatch This book is a diary of the author touching on themes of
mental illness and how non-medical approaches help particularly the impact of nature
creativity and exercise A book very relevant for our times
We prefer you to wear a face covering if you are entering the
building but it is not essential
